Question 2: Representing Social Groups
‘Inscium’ is very specifically targeted on simple social groups. For example the
main character, which is Ben is to represent to the young and old teens using his
clothing, gender and age and social class. A lot of the props and clothing as well
as the age links with the social group that we are trying to target. It is important
that we do try and make our opening sequence as appealable as possible to a
variety of social groups. Ben is a normal 17 year old that enjoys socialising much
like every teen, he’s just a normal person. The reason that we have portrayed
Ben like this is that we want to showcase that these actions in the film can
happen to anyone. He is also a working class young adult. Many horror films
these days are set in large manor houses so the characters obviously have a lot of
money so we wanted our character to appear to be working class as this is very
common in the UK. Notice the way we have also used clothing to represent Ben,
He is dressed very casual in Jeans and a sports jumper, again this is just to show
the normality of his life and show that this could happen to anyone regarding
their gender or age so we chose the most generic clothing as this does not make
him stand out to other people.
From audience research and other films we decided to represent younger people
in a horror movie rather than adults. Using adults as the main enforcers and
targets is very generic almost every horror movie is representing adults. But, the
younger audience are not represented in any of these mainly because the
younger people are more of the scapegoat in horror movies and are less
developed characters. So we wanted to represent younger people fully as to
show that the younger people can be the main character and break the
stereotype of horrible things generally happen to the adults in horror movies.
The second of our characters is the murderer with no name, he is also 17 and a
male. The reason that we again chose this person is to show that there are
younger adults that can also be a threat to the public and raise this type of
awareness. He again is also dressed very casually just to show that anyone can be
a threat in any situation. We have not really focused on a stereotype for the
product due to the fact that some stereotypes may offend certain classes and
races depending on their views. However we are challenging the stereotype that
other horror movies that the character generally dies to give an insight of what is
going on in the film, but we have decided that we challenge this as we are
introducing the characters and the character will not dies in the opening
sequence
