Reparation for the Non-Compensated Group in the District...
During the Suriname Guerrilla War between 1986 and 1992 between the Jungle commando led by
Ronnie Brunswijk and the Surinamese military team headed by Desi Bouterse, the human rights of
the people who were living in the tribal communities in the district of Marowijne were consistently
being violated. However a peace agreement had been signed in France Guiana in May 1992, the
American Court of Human Rights sentenced the government of Suriname of committing actions
against human rights and ordered the state to start an investigation to compensate the civilians of the
massacre in the Moiwana village on November 29, 1986 in Marowijne (Inter–American Court of
Human Rights 2006). Despite the Miowana village however, there were other villages ... Show more

However the actions against human rights in this village draw much more attention, because of the
killing of 39 community members, mostly women and children, in a search for the guerrilla–leader
Ronny Brunswijk. However taking the customary laws, usage, values and mores in consideration the
term 'traditional territories' does not only refer to a particular village site, but also to the areas
according to the N'Djuka customary law which reaches to the upper Tapanahony river in the district
of Sipaliwini. Unfortunately, the Inter American Court of Human Rights did not include the N'
Djuka community members living in other villages rather than Moiwana and its members in her
judgment. On the other hand community members of Moiwana living in French Guiana were also
taken in consideration by the judgment. In August 2005 the government of Suriname was ordered to
pay 13 million USD to 130 survivors and to establish a community fund (1.2 million USD) to
enhance the development of Moiwana (Sloover 2005).
The non–compensated group or the left out group is in this case the communities who did not find
justice yet after the maltreatment and killings of community members in the earlier mentioned
guerrilla war. Even though some of the livelihoods were separated from each other and were lived
by one or two families whose human rights had been violated, similar Judgments as the Moiwana
case can be applied to the group on

Indentured Workers
Around the 1830s after the abolition of slavery, over a half million Indians were transported to
thirteen mainland's and island nations in the Caribbean. The British brought them in to work the
plantations as indentured workers, primarily the sugar cane farms. Work in these farms is extremely
intense. In 1838, Guyana was the first island to received indentured workers. There were also efforts
to bring Portuguese, Chinese and other as indentured workers but it was unsuccessful. The Indians
saved the sugar industry from total economic failure by working these fields. They worked long
hours, received low wages and were often treated severely. Most the Indians lived in the English–
speaking Caribbean. Indo–Caribbean's as they were referred

Aphra Behn Research Paper
Aphra Behn is not your ordinary English playwright; in fact she was an adventurous young women.
Even so, most of her early life is still a mystery today, she has accomplished goals most women
haven't in her time. During her life she's traveled, severed as a spy and even entertained people from
all around. Aphra Behn became a literate role model for later generations of women authors. Aphra
Behn was born in December 14th, 1640. She was the daughter of a barber named Bartholomew
Johnson. When she was young she traveled to many places including Venezuela and Africa
(Encyclopedia Britannica) . Later in her youth she sailed with her family to Suriname in 1663.
Researchers stated her father didn't make it on the way there and died from sickness. There is not
enough evidence to back this statement, but researchers say after her father's death her family stayed
in Suriname for a few awhile. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

death, King Charles II then hired her into the secret service. Charles II sent her to gather information
about the Dutch Military as a spy. Even with her hard work they didn't pay her or gave her no
recognition for her service. She then borrowed money to get back to England but her debts only

she was released. To make a living she then decided to become a

Fahrenheit 451 Week 1 Lesson Learned
This week in school I learned about mutations. Mutations are the changing of the structure of a
gene, resulting in a variant form that may be transmitted to subsequent generations, Caused by the
alteration of single base units in DNA, or the deletion, insertion, or rearrangement of larger sections
of genes or chromosomes. The most important thing I learned about this week is that if it was not for
mutations we would not be able to survive up to this date. The assignment that I spent the most time
on was studying for my test that the entire ninth grade took. I can tell i am learning because i really
understand the topic that we are learning.I am having trouble learning because i worry about my
grades.
This week i school i learned about the different places in Latin america. This week i learned all the
continents of Latin america which are Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Chile, Argentina,
Ecuador, Suriname, Guiana, French Guiana, Paraguay. I can tell that i am learning because i
memorized all of thr countries in south america. I am having trouble learning central america
because it the new new topic that we are doing. We also got quized on the map of south america i

The Corruption Of Gold Mining In Suriname
The history of Suriname's independence and their lucrative mountains of gold is complicated and
treacherous. Indigenous Tribes originally inhabited Suriname, and by the late 1650's the Governor of
Barbados, Lord Willoughby settled a colony called "Willoughbyland." Lord Willoughby began
construction on multiple plantations and in slaved thousands of Africans and indigenous people. The
colony was invaded in 1667 by the Dutch who established the official name of the colony as
'Suriname.' In 1863 as slavery was being abolished, small–scale gold mining commenced. As
Suriname gained independence in 1975 with prospects of gold triggering the second gold rush. The
beginning of small–scale indigenous miners and foreign large–scale mining corruption influenced
global environmental inequality in Suriname. In 2000, Ouboter et al. (2012) stated in his case study
that the Geological and Mining Survey of Suriname (GMD) estimated that the number of small–
scale gold miners in Suriname was between 25,000 and 35,000. (873) Gold mining in Suriname is
the most significant source of employment and main export of product in the country, because of
this, the indigenous people mine to provide for their families. These small–scale indigenous miners
use mercury to extract gold because it is the cheapest and easiest way to turn the product into profit.
Mercury is used to clump the smaller pieces of gold together as its being sifted through the sluice
box. The mercury that isn't being clumped together

included tariff cuts and provisions on investment promotion and facilitation. After entering into
force in 2006, there have also been negotiations on trade in services and investments (2010). The
objectives of this Agreement, as elaborated more specifically through its principles and rules,

Amazon Rainforest Research Paper
The Amazon rainforest is the world's largest rainforest. A rainforest is forest know for its high
rainfall, these forests tend to be packed with many species. The forest is 5,500,000 km2 and is in
several countries of South America. 60% of the forest is in Brazil, with 13% in Peru, 10% in
Colombia and minor parts in Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana.
This forested is estimated to be made up of 390 billion trees and one 10th of the know species on
planet earth live there. The Amazon rainforest is important because it removes the CO2 that is
harmful to us and replaces it with oxygen. Some studies show that it provides 20% of the oxygen
that we need to breath. Annually the Amazon removes about 15 gigatons of CO2.

The Impact Of Fishing On The Service Of Industrialization
Chapter I: Introduction
1.1 General Introduction
Fishing is an activity that people have been doing since early civilization. It evolved from a social
need to currently also one of commercial interest2. As Cochrane and Garcia (2009) describe it so
nicely:
"...the commoditization of nature in the service of industrialization."
After years of perceived growth, it is now evident that globally countries suffer from the negative
effects that we people have ourselves helped create. The introduction starts with a background and
relates the complexity of fisheries management from a global level to Suriname. Also the benefits
that fisheries provide for Suriname will be mentioned. Following the problem statement and the
objective of the study, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When looking at the state of the fish stocks of which information is available, confirmed that the
proportion of overexploited, depleted and recovering stocks have remained relatively stable over the
last 10–15 years, after the observed upward trend of operating in the 1970s and 1980s. It is
estimated that in 2007 52% of the fish are fully exploited, meaning that the catches are close to their
maximum permissible limit for sustainable operation and that there was no scope for further
expansion (Valdimarsson, 2007).

This upward trend internationally, especially in the 1970s and 1980s, has influenced Suriname.
Since 1979 fisheries in Suriname went through various developments that have a perceptible upward
trend. These developments characterize diversification of the fishing fleet, the commercial
marketing of previously unknown species, improvement of facilities and major expansion of the
fleet. From that year, the Surinamese government had several collaborations with Belgium, Japan,
the FAO and the European Union (EU) and there is much work done in the field of fisheries
development, policy, research, data collection and processing, quality management and support in
the form of input, terminal facilities and other amenities.
Some of these efforts today expanded or developed, but many efforts have also deteriorated.
What makes fishery management so complex?

Oroonoko, By Aphra Behn
Aphra Behn's work Oroonoko was ahead of its time in its discussion of slavery and colonization.
Oroonoko revealed the negative side of the slave trading industry which was something almost
unheard of in the 17th century when slave trading was a booming business and a part of everyday
life. In the work it can be validated that Behn's reason behind writing this novel in this time period
was that she did not want this man's life to be forgotten or be lost in vain. Furthermore, it is believe
that Behn was taking a stand against slavery using experience, change, and the truth. In America
today slavery has been abolished for over 150 years and yet it is still a very real situation for
countries around the world. When Behn was alive slavery was an everyday occurrence in most
countries around the world in some form. Slavery in the 17th century meant, as it does today, that a
person had "no control over his destiny, no choice of occupation or employer, no rights to property
or marriage, and no control over the fate of his children." (Mier and Kopytoff 3). Many higher class
Europeans viewed slaves as goods and not real people ignoring the fact and treating them as animals
to do their bidding. Some people treated their slaves better then others, however the fact that they
were still slaves remained. Slavery was a so common it was not unordinary for the people of
Europe, and later on America, to have them as a commodity while importing and exporting them.

Reflection Paper
My senior year US History teacher Mr. Seagars told the class a story about a student that could write
answer so believable that it even made him question whether he had his facts wrong about history.
He stated that by the time he finished reading the incorrect answers of this student that most of the
time he gave him credit just because the story was so good. That student was me. I grew up in a
lower middle class neighborhood in the small town of Anderson SC. The average passerby would
most likely sum me up as the runt of the neighborhood if they did not know me. There were only a
handful of kids my age to interact with. The majority of my playmates were much larger and much
older than I. This upbringing taught me many lessons growing up. Any wrong move, word or
reaction could result in ridicule or even worse, a beat down. I quickly learned to navigate the jungle
that people called a neighborhood but more importantly I learned what makes people do things they
do. This knowledge has help guide and in many cases protect me as I have gone through my
adventure so far in life.
My highschool years are blotted with flashes of success followed by long periods of under
achievement. Almost like clockwork each year, I would score in the gifted range on standardized
testing and then follow that up with just enough work to get by in the classroom. When I completed
highschool, I knew that I wanted to attend college with my friends but my grades would not allow

Similarities Between Guyana And Suriname
Guyana and Suriname are neighbor countries, located on the Caribbean coast of South America (see
figure 1). Guyana was originally colonised by the Netherlands. Later, it became a British colony and
became independent in 1966 from the United Kingdom. With Suriname it was the other way around:
it was colonized by the English and the Dutch, but later captured by the Dutch who governed
Suriname until 1954. Guyana is a little bit bigger in size and population than Suriname but Suriname
has a higher gross domestic product per capita. Both countries also have similarities: both have
substantial different species due to the big rain forest they contain. However, Suriname is according
to the Environmental Performance Index (EPI) (2014) better in protecting human health from
environmental harm and protecting ecosystem. Suriname has a score of 53,57 and is thereby ranked
at the 71st place, while Guyana has a score of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The definition of Quality of Governance is: "(...) the traditions and institutions by which authority in

nation's consumption, government expenditures, exports and capital formation. ("Marcuss and
Kane," 2007). GDP estimates were used to show that the economy could provide sufficient supplies
while maintaining production of consumer goods and services. Today, the GDP, measures economic
growth referred by economists, politicians, top–level decision–makers, and the media. GDP

The economy of the state depends on commerce with trade partners from the Netherlands, the
United States, Canada, Trinidad and Tobago. The economic growth of the state slowed due to the
decline of the mining, construction and utility business. The expenditures, poor tax collection, a
bloated civil service and reduced foreign aid contributed to the deficit which is 11% of the GDP. The
government of Suriname started to interact in its economy to assist in stabilizing its money structure,
by introducing price controls to contain inflation. The government outlawed all prices increases on
all of it services and goods. Anyone or business that did not comply by the regulations or laws were
faced with harsh sanctions, confiscating or closing their businesses. The regulations stayed in place
and kept the economy on the rise until after the elections. Inflation started to rise as though the
government had did anything before. The government came back with another plan to regulate trade
and ration imported goods, but the business of smuggling thrived. These actions brought on an
exchange rate system, but the government did not fully understand the impact of the rate system.
Inflation spiraled out of control by 1994. The government came with a new plan to start printing its
own money. The government unified its exchange rates and reformed its tax and customs system.
They also eliminated the collection lag in income and consumption tax. An

Vaccination was the rubbing of juice from herbs into skin incisions and was commonly practiced by
most slaves. Furthermore, Evil eye in Suriname was described as a sickness that babies and
sometimes adults could get when a person looked too strongly at them or admired them too much
while secretly being jealous. This could affect the victim's wellbeing, whether intended or not. To
cure or prevent evil eye, slaves in Suriname bathed their babies or themselves with water containing
Reckitt's Blue. Reckitt's Blue was sometimes also rubbed on various body parts of the child such as:
ears, palms and head. People also "used herbal baths, jewelries such as bracelets and waist beads or
applied different substances to their skins in order to ward off spirits" . In addition, another cultural

mainly defined by the color appearance of the fecal matter of baby's which was tainted yellow and

have a leg span of about 12 inches! That's the size a small pizza! Their bodies are dark brown
covered by reddish hairs giving the spider a golden blond appearance. The coloration of this spider
gives it its species name "blondi" which is the Latin word for blond, or golden. The goliath bird–

loud hissing noise hoping to confuse and scare its predator. If that doesn't work they will raise up on

As per CIA handbook, "Since 2003, Brazil has steadily improved macroeconomic stability, building
up foreign reserves, reducing its debt profile by shifting its debt burden toward real denominated
and domestically held instruments, adhering to an inflation target, and committing to fiscal
responsibility. In 2008, Brazil became a net external creditor and two ratings agencies awarded

Journey Of A Woman From All India Women 's Conference
Journey of a woman from All India Women's Conference to International Council of Women The
difference between a man and woman arises when they are socially labeled as male and female
,thereby attaching characteristics of masculine and feminine to it.As Simone de Beauvoir says, 'One
is not born but rather becomes a woman.' Women are always put at the lower level on the table of
social, political or economic hierarchy. So the fatherhood is a sociological fiction and motherhood is
just a biological fact. Some of the feminists have argued that the word 'woman' itself includes the
word 'man' which deprives the women to have their own identities exclusive of men. Also Maya
Angelou has quoted,"How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she–
roes!" Like all other social groups, women have also organized themselves within groups equipped
with their agenda and ideologies in order to upgrade their position in all aspects of life.Though their
have been many instances where individual groups could not bring about a change and the strong
structure of patriarchy crushed them in–order to make it adjustable to the prevalent arrangements. It
is in the modern times that provided the space for fee play of women protest aligning with other
groups to alternate the arrangements. This flame of oppression turned into a fire when different
groups of women from different parts of the world protest against it.When there was a whole gamut

Developing A World Class Education System
Regional Context
Producing a world class education system to strengthen human capital and to produce the skills
necessary for the citizenry, was a goal which drove Jamaica's initiatives as they continue to strive to
build strength to compete in the global economy (Davis, 2004). According to Davis (2004) to
achieve this goal the Jamaican authorities formulated a task force to assess and propose the way
forward in education in their country. From the assessment, the task force suggested a number of
recommendations, one of which was the implementation of a seamless K to 12 system. This
recommendation was categorized to specifically address the issue of chronic under achievement

One of the main international bodies that has championed the fight for equal rights for persons with
disabilities and has caused Trinidad and Tobago to embark on ambitious educational reform
initiatives is the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). One
of their initial benchmark in their fight for equal rights began with the Universal Declaration for

Hunger Vs Hunger
Indeed, being homeless is dire, but hunger can kill. In the United States, hunger is not as serious as
other countries. Starvation in America is not major, if it exists. An article explains hunger in the
United States, "Today more than ever, many people receive food assistance. For most, the need is
brief and serves as a helping hand between jobs or in times of disaster or dire circumstances. For
others, the need is ongoing" ("What"). Although hungry people subsist, help for them is available.
This article also explains what hunger typically looks like in America, "Being anxious for a meal to
be served, rushing food lines, eating all their food at mealtimes, extreme hunger on Monday
mornings, extreme thinness or puffy, swollen skin, excess absences, hyperactive, irritable, anxious,
withdrawn, distressed, . . . sickness, . . . and lack of food resources" ("What"). Starvation and hunger
have two different meanings. Hungry people don't get enough to eat, but starving people are burning
more energy than they take in. Starving people have little to no food all of the time, and are slowly
wasting away. Few people, if any, are starving in America. Malnutrition is a result of being hungry.
Malnutrition means someone is not getting enough proper nutrition. As of 2017, 190.7 million
people, or 14.5 percent of the population in India are malnourished. Undernourishment in children
has serious effects. In 2017, 38.4 percent of India's children population under age five are stunted.

Characterizing the Religious Encounter between Moravians and Saramakas
When Moravians in Germany sent three missionaries to Suriname in 1765 to witness to the
Saramakas, two groups with unique and fundamentally different cultural, social, and religious
beliefs and structures met. During the course of their stay, the Moravians were hounded by disease
and disappointed by the poor reception of the gospel; meanwhile, the Saramakas were plagued with
inter–tribal rivalries and poor relations with the white government officials and plantation owners,
with whom they maintained an unsteady peace. These circumstances, as well as the many ways in
which Moravian and Saramaka expectations and social behavior differed, created a barrier between

Moravians, though they came to witness to the blacks as fellow children of God, couldn't bridge the
cultural gap; one brother wrote, "It is indescribable how uncomfortable it is for me...to lodge with
the negroes in their huts...they live in a very disagreeable manner, which stems from their heathenish
customs." The restrictions Moravians placed on the behavior of converts made them trade some of
their Saramaka customs for white customs, and discouraged many Saramaka from converting. As
one woman said, "I still love the spectacles of the negroes. I love to dance and I cannot hear any
story about the Great God just now because if I were to convert, I wouldn't be able to dance any
more" (238).
The converts, who were initially mainly children, faced many temptations to backslide (98, 320).
They were often blamed for problems in the community. For instance, after Alabi and Skipio killed
the cayman, Alabi's sister became sick and the Saramakas divined that Alabi's conversion had
angered his dead father, Abini, who Alabi now needed to placate through ritual means. The
Moravian's restrictions on matters of "personal style" disappointed the children who asked
permission to make a shriek of mourning for Simeon's death, but were reprimanded for suggesting
such uncivilized behavior (227). Those sacrifices were

The Holiday's of Suriname
Suriname is a small country located on the northern coast of South America. The people of
Suriname take their holidays and other celebrations very seriously. Suriname celebrates many of the
same holidays as the rest of the world, but also celebrates many of their own holidays. Phagwah Day
is a very popular Hindu holiday, celebrated in Suriname. This holiday is celebrated on the last full
moon of the lunar month, known as Phalguna. Phalguna is the twelfth month on the Hindu calendar,
the same calendar that governs the Hindu religious life. Phagwah Day is celebrated all over the
country at festivals and parties. Phagwah Day marks the beginning of spring in Suriname, and is
known in Suriname as the festival of color. The people, who go the Phagwah festivals, wear the
color white to show that they are ready to celebrate and get dirty. Today, Hinduism is one of the
main religions in Suriname, and at one point was the most common religion. This may be a key
factor in why Phagwah Day is so popular in Suriname. Although Phagwah Day is a very popular
holiday, the people of Suriname celebrate even larger holidays. Boxing Day is the holiday that is
celebrated the day after Christmas by the adults in Suriname. Boxing Day is a holiday in which the
employees of a company are given the day off and receive a gift from their boss. Boxing Day is
celebrated in many of the commonwealth countries around the world. Boxing Day is said to be a

Reparation for non-compensated group in Suriname district

  • 1. Reparation for the Non-Compensated Group in the District... During the Suriname Guerrilla War between 1986 and 1992 between the Jungle commando led by Ronnie Brunswijk and the Surinamese military team headed by Desi Bouterse, the human rights of the people who were living in the tribal communities in the district of Marowijne were consistently being violated. However a peace agreement had been signed in France Guiana in May 1992, the American Court of Human Rights sentenced the government of Suriname of committing actions against human rights and ordered the state to start an investigation to compensate the civilians of the massacre in the Moiwana village on November 29, 1986 in Marowijne (Inter–American Court of Human Rights 2006). Despite the Miowana village however, there were other villages ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However the actions against human rights in this village draw much more attention, because of the killing of 39 community members, mostly women and children, in a search for the guerrilla–leader Ronny Brunswijk. However taking the customary laws, usage, values and mores in consideration the term 'traditional territories' does not only refer to a particular village site, but also to the areas according to the N'Djuka customary law which reaches to the upper Tapanahony river in the district of Sipaliwini. Unfortunately, the Inter American Court of Human Rights did not include the N' Djuka community members living in other villages rather than Moiwana and its members in her judgment. On the other hand community members of Moiwana living in French Guiana were also taken in consideration by the judgment. In August 2005 the government of Suriname was ordered to pay 13 million USD to 130 survivors and to establish a community fund (1.2 million USD) to enhance the development of Moiwana (Sloover 2005). The non–compensated group or the left out group is in this case the communities who did not find justice yet after the maltreatment and killings of community members in the earlier mentioned guerrilla war. Even though some of the livelihoods were separated from each other and were lived by one or two families whose human rights had been violated, similar Judgments as the Moiwana case can be applied to the group on ... • 3. Indentured Workers Around the 1830s after the abolition of slavery, over a half million Indians were transported to thirteen mainland's and island nations in the Caribbean. The British brought them in to work the plantations as indentured workers, primarily the sugar cane farms. Work in these farms is extremely intense. In 1838, Guyana was the first island to received indentured workers. There were also efforts to bring Portuguese, Chinese and other as indentured workers but it was unsuccessful. The Indians saved the sugar industry from total economic failure by working these fields. They worked long hours, received low wages and were often treated severely. • 5. Aphra Behn Research Paper Aphra Behn is not your ordinary English playwright; in fact she was an adventurous young women. Even so, most of her early life is still a mystery today, she has accomplished goals most women haven't in her time. During her life she's traveled, severed as a spy and even entertained people from all around. Aphra Behn became a literate role model for later generations of women authors. Aphra Behn was born in December 14th, 1640. She was the daughter of a barber named Bartholomew Johnson. When she was young she traveled to many places including Venezuela and Africa (Encyclopedia Britannica) . Later in her youth she sailed with her family to Suriname in 1663. Researchers stated her father didn't make it on the way there and died from sickness. There is not enough evidence to back this statement, but researchers say after her father's death her family stayed in Suriname for a few awhile. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She met a wealthy merchant and married in 1665. Then the great plague came along in 1665 and that was the death of her husband (ENotes). Being left with no financial support after his death, King Charles II then hired her into the secret service. Charles II sent her to gather information about the Dutch Military as a spy. Even with her hard work they didn't pay her or gave her no recognition for her service. She then borrowed money to get back to England but her debts only continued to deepen. When she returned she was sent to prison for her debts, and after a short stay she was released. To make a living she then decided to become a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Mutations are the changing of the structure of a gene, resulting in a variant form that may be transmitted to subsequent generations, Caused by the alteration of single base units in DNA, or the deletion, insertion, or rearrangement of larger sections of genes or chromosomes. The most important thing I learned about this week is that if it was not for mutations we would not be able to survive up to this date. The assignment that I spent the most time on was studying for my test that the entire ninth grade took. • 9. The Corruption Of Gold Mining In Suriname The history of Suriname's independence and their lucrative mountains of gold is complicated and treacherous. Indigenous Tribes originally inhabited Suriname, and by the late 1650's the Governor of Barbados, Lord Willoughby settled a colony called "Willoughbyland." Lord Willoughby began construction on multiple plantations and in slaved thousands of Africans and indigenous people. The colony was invaded in 1667 by the Dutch who established the official name of the colony as 'Suriname.' In 1863 as slavery was being abolished, small–scale gold mining commenced. As Suriname gained independence in 1975 with prospects of gold triggering the second gold rush. The beginning of small–scale indigenous miners and foreign large–scale mining corruption influenced global environmental inequality in Suriname. In 2000, Ouboter et al. (2012) stated in his case study that the Geological and Mining Survey of Suriname (GMD) estimated that the number of small– scale gold miners in Suriname was between 25,000 and 35,000. (873) Gold mining in Suriname is the most significant source of employment and main export of product in the country, because of this, the indigenous people mine to provide for their families. These small–scale indigenous miners use mercury to extract gold because it is the cheapest and easiest way to turn the product into profit. • 15. The Impact Of Fishing On The Service Of Industrialization Chapter I: Introduction 1.1 General Introduction Fishing is an activity that people have been doing since early civilization. It evolved from a social need to currently also one of commercial interest2. As Cochrane and Garcia (2009) describe it so nicely: "...the commoditization of nature in the service of industrialization." After years of perceived growth, it is now evident that globally countries suffer from the negative effects that we people have ourselves helped create. The introduction starts with a background and relates the complexity of fisheries management from a global level to Suriname. Also the benefits that fisheries provide for Suriname will be mentioned. Following the problem statement and the objective of the study, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When looking at the state of the fish stocks of which information is available, confirmed that the proportion of overexploited, depleted and recovering stocks have remained relatively stable over the last 10–15 years, after the observed upward trend of operating in the 1970s and 1980s. It is estimated that in 2007 52% of the fish are fully exploited, meaning that the catches are close to their maximum permissible limit for sustainable operation and that there was no scope for further expansion (Valdimarsson, 2007). 2 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fishing accessed March 30, 2010 2 This upward trend internationally, especially in the 1970s and 1980s, has influenced Suriname. Since 1979 fisheries in Suriname went through various developments that have a perceptible upward trend. These developments characterize diversification of the fishing fleet, the commercial marketing of previously unknown species, improvement of facilities and major expansion of the fleet. From that year, the Surinamese government had several collaborations with Belgium, Japan, the FAO and the European Union (EU) and there is much work done in the field of fisheries development, policy, research, data collection and processing, quality management and support in the form of input, terminal facilities and other amenities. • 19. Oroonoko, By Aphra Behn Aphra Behn's work Oroonoko was ahead of its time in its discussion of slavery and colonization. Oroonoko revealed the negative side of the slave trading industry which was something almost unheard of in the 17th century when slave trading was a booming business and a part of everyday life. In the work it can be validated that Behn's reason behind writing this novel in this time period was that she did not want this man's life to be forgotten or be lost in vain. Furthermore, it is believe that Behn was taking a stand against slavery using experience, change, and the truth. In America today slavery has been abolished for over 150 years and yet it is still a very real situation for countries around the world. When Behn was alive slavery was an everyday occurrence in most countries around the world in some form. Slavery in the 17th century meant, as it does today, that a person had "no control over his destiny, no choice of occupation or employer, no rights to property or marriage, and no control over the fate of his children." (Mier and Kopytoff 3). Many higher class Europeans viewed slaves as goods and not real people ignoring the fact and treating them as animals to do their bidding. Some people treated their slaves better then others, however the fact that they were still slaves remained. Slavery was a so common it was not unordinary for the people of Europe, and later on America, to have them as a commodity while importing and exporting them. Freeing the slaves was ... • 21. Reflection Paper My senior year US History teacher Mr. Seagars told the class a story about a student that could write answer so believable that it even made him question whether he had his facts wrong about history. He stated that by the time he finished reading the incorrect answers of this student that most of the time he gave him credit just because the story was so good. That student was me. I grew up in a lower middle class neighborhood in the small town of Anderson SC. The average passerby would most likely sum me up as the runt of the neighborhood if they did not know me. There were only a handful of kids my age to interact with. The majority of my playmates were much larger and much older than I. This upbringing taught me many lessons growing up. Any wrong move, word or reaction could result in ridicule or even worse, a beat down. I quickly learned to navigate the jungle that people called a neighborhood but more importantly I learned what makes people do things they do. This knowledge has help guide and in many cases protect me as I have gone through my adventure so far in life. Journey Of A Woman From All India Women 's Conference Journey of a woman from All India Women's Conference to International Council of Women The difference between a man and woman arises when they are socially labeled as male and female ,thereby attaching characteristics of masculine and feminine to it.As Simone de Beauvoir says, 'One is not born but rather becomes a woman.' Women are always put at the lower level on the table of social, political or economic hierarchy. So the fatherhood is a sociological fiction and motherhood is just a biological fact. Some of the feminists have argued that the word 'woman' itself includes the word 'man' which deprives the women to have their own identities exclusive of men. Also Maya Angelou has quoted,"How important it is for us to recognize and celebrate our heroes and she– roes!" Like all other social groups, women have also organized themselves within groups equipped with their agenda and ideologies in order to upgrade their position in all aspects of life.Though their have been many instances where individual groups could not bring about a change and the strong structure of patriarchy crushed them in–order to make it adjustable to the prevalent arrangements. It is in the modern times that provided the space for fee play of women protest aligning with other groups to alternate the arrangements. This flame of oppression turned into a fire when different groups of women from different parts of the world protest against it.When there was a whole gamut of pressure from different women–groups, the ... Developing A World Class Education System Regional Context Producing a world class education system to strengthen human capital and to produce the skills necessary for the citizenry, was a goal which drove Jamaica's initiatives as they continue to strive to build strength to compete in the global economy (Davis, 2004). According to Davis (2004) to achieve this goal the Jamaican authorities formulated a task force to assess and propose the way forward in education in their country. Such endeavors have been approached as a necessary measure to improve their respective education system. Local context One of the main international bodies that has championed the fight for equal rights for persons with disabilities and has caused Trinidad and Tobago to embark on ambitious educational reform initiatives is the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). One of their initial benchmark in their fight for equal rights began with the Universal Declaration for Human Rights in 1948. Trinidad and Tobago joined this fight in the years that followed and became a signatory to some of the landmark conventions and achievements of UNESCO as seen in diagram 1. The Convention on the United Nations Rights of the child, which was ratified by Trinidad and Tobago in December 1991, includes items such as principle 5 and to a lesser extent principle 10 referring to the protection, treatment and provisions of children including those with special needs. • 73. Hunger Vs Hunger Indeed, being homeless is dire, but hunger can kill. In the United States, hunger is not as serious as other countries. Starvation in America is not major, if it exists. An article explains hunger in the United States, "Today more than ever, many people receive food assistance. For most, the need is brief and serves as a helping hand between jobs or in times of disaster or dire circumstances. For others, the need is ongoing" ("What"). Although hungry people subsist, help for them is available. This article also explains what hunger typically looks like in America, "Being anxious for a meal to be served, rushing food lines, eating all their food at mealtimes, extreme hunger on Monday mornings, extreme thinness or puffy, swollen skin, excess absences, hyperactive, irritable, anxious, withdrawn, distressed, . . . sickness, . . . and lack of food resources" ("What"). Starvation and hunger have two different meanings. Hungry people don't get enough to eat, but starving people are burning more energy than they take in. Starving people have little to no food all of the time, and are slowly wasting away. Few people, if any, are starving in America. Malnutrition is a result of being hungry. Malnutrition means someone is not getting enough proper nutrition. As of 2017, 190.7 million people, or 14.5 percent of the population in India are malnourished. Undernourishment in children has serious effects. In 2017, 38.4 percent of India's children population under age five are stunted. On ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. Characterizing the Religious Encounter between Moravians... Characterizing the Religious Encounter between Moravians and Saramakas When Moravians in Germany sent three missionaries to Suriname in 1765 to witness to the Saramakas, two groups with unique and fundamentally different cultural, social, and religious beliefs and structures met. During the course of their stay, the Moravians were hounded by disease and disappointed by the poor reception of the gospel; meanwhile, the Saramakas were plagued with inter–tribal rivalries and poor relations with the white government officials and plantation owners, with whom they maintained an unsteady peace. These circumstances, as well as the many ways in which Moravian and Saramaka expectations and social behavior differed, created a barrier between the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moravians, though they came to witness to the blacks as fellow children of God, couldn't bridge the cultural gap; one brother wrote, "It is indescribable how uncomfortable it is for me...to lodge with the negroes in their huts...they live in a very disagreeable manner, which stems from their heathenish customs." The restrictions Moravians placed on the behavior of converts made them trade some of their Saramaka customs for white customs, and discouraged many Saramaka from converting. As one woman said, "I still love the spectacles of the negroes. I love to dance and I cannot hear any story about the Great God just now because if I were to convert, I wouldn't be able to dance any more" (238). The converts, who were initially mainly children, faced many temptations to backslide (98, 320). They were often blamed for problems in the community. For instance, after Alabi and Skipio killed the cayman, Alabi's sister became sick and the Saramakas divined that Alabi's conversion had angered his dead father, Abini, who Alabi now needed to placate through ritual means. The Moravian's restrictions on matters of "personal style" disappointed the children who asked permission to make a shriek of mourning for Simeon's death, but were reprimanded for suggesting such uncivilized behavior (227).
