Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

- 1. Ancillary Tasks Website Analysis – Kent Life Magazine
- 2. This is the Kent Life website, this displays information from the magazines, in a blog type view. This gives the reader another element to the information in the magazines – making the reading experience more interesting as the website is updated more often than the magazine released.
- 3. The website makes use of the logo found on the magazines, “Kent Life” written in a traditional font – this creates a brand image across mediums of viewing information. The local weather is displayed in the right hand side, creating a regional feel. Below this, a menu bar using different colours for each co-ordinating area of the website.
- 4. Below this, the main topics of the website are shown. This gives the viewer a glimpse of the top stores in the region, giving them an easy access link to them. It then allows the user to search for things locally, again reiterating the regional feel of the website and making it appeal to people who live within Kent.
- 5. The website allows the user to subscribe to the magazine. This can be through a online e-edition or a subscription being sent to your door. This allows another portal for the customer to purchase the magazine – this will increase the sales of the magazine making it easier to be subscribed to.
- 6. Showing the latest articles, by recent, most read and commented this gives more coverage of specific titles. This website encourages people to subscribe to the magazine and is a form of advertising each issue to the reader.
- 7. A second hyperlinked page comes from the home page – in this case the latest on places within Kent. This page provides information on events happening around Kent and also features on areas to promote to the reader. This takes some stories from the magazine, and incorporates new ones again to generate more coverage.
- 8. In this example, the house style remains the same with the local search options on the right hand side for the user to get a regional feel when using the website. The first three articles include pictures and a description/blurb for them – this suggest these are the latest topics, or the most important encouraging the user to view them first.
- 9. After these, further articles are listed without an image or description. These are mostly information regarding specific towns or areas rather than events covering the county.
- 10. A third hyperlinked page covers Food and Drink. This again takes information from the magazine, whilst incorporating it with the information solely from the website. this page is split into three columns – the first covering Recipes with the most important/latest one at the top with a large picture, title and a description.
- 11. Below this, there are further articles with smaller images – this suggests they are not the latest ones. The second column displays restaurant reviews – again with a large image to make the first article stand out, reducing in size below. These stories are from around Kent and make the website and it’s topics personal to the reader. The third column again shows the user signup forms, and searching from around the local area.
