Contents page analysis
- 1. This is a contents page from popular alternative magazine, NME (New Musical Express). I believe this contents page to be very effective as I believe that the simplistic nature of it allows for easy navigation around the magazine. Unlike many similar magazines in the music industry, it sticks to many of the conventions that should be used to create such a page. The White on black on the right presents simple and effective colours that allow the reader to easily distinguish the different sections of the magazine. Also the use of simplistic columns stops the reader from becoming confused. Additionally, it is very obvious what this edition of the magazine is about from this contents page as the single photo relates to the article. This shows that the arctic monkeys are the key theme of the magazine as it shows a photo of them and also has a few sentences describing what is currently going on with the Monkeys. Furthermore the advert that allows the reader to subscribe is in an obvious place, which some may see as helpful as they can find out easily how to do just that.
- 2. Again, I believe this contents page, from the magazine Q, is a very effective one. It is very simplistic, with an obvious layout. It is clear in how it is presented, with a single column running down the left of the page and the main article of the magazine highlighted in one big picture on the right, which spans half the page. The use of red on white colours is clear and allows for simple and easy reading however, these colours seem to be bland. Additionally, there is also another picture on the top left hand corner, this can show that there is another key article within the magazine but this does not take precedent over the photo on the left. Each highlighted page within the contents also has its own small extract explaining some information. However, although this simplistic nature can be seen as being lazy and overly simplistic. There is obviously information on other pages but this is not highlighted as it may not be as important, but the very fact there is other information may lead people to want to see this in the contents. Furthermore, the main article has only a picture with no explanation of what it will be about. To a reader whom may not be familiar with the figure in the photo this explains absolutely nothing and can therefore seen to be lazy and unprofessional.
- 3. This contents page, From Clash Magazine, is different to the other two as it is more packed. This may not be overly crammed like a ‘Kerrang!’ contents page, but it still holds a lot of information. There is still a single column running down the left hand side of the page that states all the important pages and what they include and has also been split up into two sections. This contents page holds a lot more photos than previously analysed pages from ‘Q’ and ‘NME’. The main article has the biggest photo at the top with its own few lines of information while other key articles still hold photos and sentences. This seems to state the bigger the photo, the more important the article is to the magazine. Additionally, this page seems to follow the rules of contents pages with the use of columns and simple pictures. However, while most magazines use similar font colour throughout the entire magazine, Clash doesn’t seem to do so. The title is a black ‘CLASH’ on a gold background, this would make the reader assume that the magazine would use similar colours but the contents page uses pink, which doesn’t fit in with the theme of the magazine. This could be to show a rebellious side of the magazine or to follow a rebellious band that they are covering.
