Codes & Conventions
Website
For my research into the codes and conventions of websites I mainly followed
either regional magazine websites or fashion magazine websites. I researched the
regional magazines first because that is the main objective of the brief, and then
after that I began to research the high fashion magazines such as vogue. Whilst
taking these into consideration and using ideas from both categories I hope to
produce the best possible outcome for my billboard.
Kent Life
The title is the largest text on the page so it stands out and contrasts against
the background. The common convention of a search bar will help the browser
to be able to navigate their way throughout the website. Tagging social media
accounts will help to promote their magazine as well as keep readers up to date.
The use of hyperlinks to specific reads are also a nice touch as it helps the
reader to get to exactly what they want with ease. There are also smaller
articles dotted around the page that the reader can read through made up of
different genres. Advertisements and subscriptions are in bright colours to catch
the eye of the reader.
The Bristol Magazine
Again, the title is the largest text on the page and heavily contrasts the background which is also a very nice, clean colour.
I really like this website as it is very simple and easy to use, everything is kept right in front of you and the addition of the
search bar and genre categories make it even easier for the reader to find exactly what they are after. I would like my
website to look somewhat like this. The use of drop down menus that appear when hovering your mouse over the headings
is really nice, it helps the user to find anything they're looking for with ease. The use of lots of pictures to grab the reader
is also nice and is also something that I may be looking to do with my website.
The London Magazine
Now, London is the area in which I would like to base my regional magazine so I was definitely
interested to see what The London Magazine’s website had to offer. The site was based around a
black and white template which suited the style of the magazine very well and looked very
professional. The title isn’t massive but still sticks to the convention of it being the largest text
on the page and again contrasts against the background. Their website also featured the drop
down menus when hovering over the headings with your mouse which is a very nice touch. The
use of pictures is nice also as they change every few seconds to showcase different articles that
can be found on their website. It also informs the reader of the current issue and date so they
can keep up to date.
Vogue
The convention stays with the title being the largest text on the page, it also contrasts the background.
The colour scheme is also kept very simple again taking no attention away from the articles that they
showcase. The site also has the drop down hyperlinks for users to find what they are looking for as well as a
search bar. Subscription offers in the corner also attract the reader to purchase their magazine.
HYPEBEAST
This website has a very nice layout. It showcases the current issue as the main feature as well as listing every single
past issue underneath. Content information is also given to attract the reader as well as the added option to straight
up purchase the current issue (majority of past issues are sold out). They have also stuck to the common convention
of keeping the title as the largest and boldest text on the page. Again the use of black and white is nice and modernizing
and heavily contrasts the background. Social media links in bright colours also stand out against the background and the
addition of the search bar again helps the reader to navigate their way throughout the site.
Some common conventions of the magazine titles include being very large,
very bold and highly contrasting against their backgrounds. They also all
make use of capital lettering to make each title as clear as possible. The
differences between the regional magazines and the fashion magazines
were very minimal throughout each site and especially when it came to
the title. This helps to create a strong brand awareness for their magazine
if people see it a lot.
Some common conventions of the hyperlinks are that they are all a feature on the magazines I researched, whether it be
regional or fashion. The use of these hyperlinks make it easier for the user to navigate their way through the website and
find exactly what they are looking for/interested in. Each hyperlink Is usually one or two words long to keep everything
short and informative. The main differences between the regional magazine websites and the fashion magazine websites
are the hyperlinks themselves. The regional hyperlinks were more about events, food, drink, nature in the local area etc.
whereas the fashion hyperlinks were more about fashion, trends, media and art. However they did both have one in
common which was culture.
