Job Title: Referral Coordinator
Reports to: Patient Intake Director
FLSA status: Non-Exempt
SUMMARY: Ensures the timely retrieval of insurance authorizations to avoid collection
denials.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONISBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may be
assigned.
 Obtains subsequent insurance authorizations and referrals as required.
 Obtains all retro authorization/referrals not obtained due to transition
 Appeals all denied authorization/referral request.
 Maintains authorization report/exceptions.
 Researches and, if necessary, appeals authorization/referrals.
 Maintains and updates list of insurance companies that require authorizations/referrals
with contact information.
 Provides back up to Patient Account Representatives.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience
 High School diploma required.
 Associate Degree preferred.

 Minimum of 6 months experience in patient registration in hospital or medical setting
preferred.
 Exceptional interpersonal skills.
 Excellent organizational and time management skills.
 Knowledge of medical terminology.
 Knowledge of various health insurance programs.
 Knowledge in the medical insurance industry required.
 Excellent computer skills to include the internet, outlook, excel and word.
 Job requires research and exceptional organizational skills to manage a large patient load.

Language Skills
 Ability to read, analyze and interpret general health care and/or business periodicals,
professional journals and governmental regulations.
 Ability to create reports and write business correspondence.
 Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from patients,
physicians, billing, insurance companies and the general public.
Mathematical Skills
 Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers,
common fractions and decimals.
 Ability to compute rate, ratio and percentages.
Reasoning Ability
 Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
 Ability to deal with several abstracts and concrete variables.
