Increasing student satisfaction by closing the feedback loop

One of the biggest challenges universities and student unions’ face today when enhancing the student experience is closing the feedback loop between students and staff. With a constant stream of survey and systems, university staff struggle to demonstrate how they are acting on student feedback in a timely and relevant manner. As a result this leads to students feeling further disengaged and dissatisfied as they feel their voice is not heard or do not adequately supported. The student digital experience tracker survey gathered responses from over 22,000 learners across the UK. It found differences in digital access and device use between learner groups. Further Education learners had less wireless access but more institutional device use than other groups. Higher Education learners relied more on personal devices. The survey also examined learner engagement with digital activities and tools, satisfaction with digital skills support, and preparation for the digital workplace.

- The ESP process was conducted at the University of York Library over a week in 2008. It assessed the state of assessment at the library and made recommendations. - Findings included that assessment was not embedded in the culture, LibQUAL+ scores were low, and processes could be more efficient. Suggestions included promoting a culture of assessment, reviewing procedures, and following up on LibQUAL+ results. - Actions taken included training for staff, process reviews, and improved LibQUAL+ and student survey results in 2009, showing the positive impact of the ESP visit. The conclusions were that the ESP approach transferred well to a UK institution and contributed to cultural and strategic changes.

Research libraries in North America are developing new services and programs aimed at meeting scholars’ needs for data-intensive, and interdisciplinary research support. Examples of some emerging programs include: • Supporting digital research (graphical information systems, digital humanities, survey research methodologies, working with large datasets) • Educating users about copyright and author rights • Supporting content-creation and publishing activities in numerous ways: institutional repository to store and host works, establishing maker spaces, and developing infrastructure and workflows for more formal library-located publishing efforts • Collaboration with research offices to educate researchers about federal mandates for open access publications and datasets • Establishment of data management and archival resources • Partnering with third-party vendors and with consortia to achieve scale-efficiencies and facilitate impact • Development of researcher information management systems to support collaboration, discovery, and reporting We present a case study of the development of a suite of new tools and services at the University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign within its newly established Office of Research to support digital scholarship and to provide sustained and broad access to research. The library at the University of Roehampton restructured its services in 2016-17 to respond to changes in student population, new technologies, and metrics like TEF. The restructure centralized services and created cross-functional teams. This allowed for more consistent use of the reading list framework across departments and better partnership with faculty. An audit found measurable improvements after implementing reading lists university-wide in 2017. Next steps include better understanding student use, improving reading list quality, and using data to inform collection decisions and measure impact on student experience and academic achievement.

Plan for the REF Annual Research Assessments • “‘light-touch’ in nature, capturing relevant data to calculate the University’s REF- related KPIs rather than the development of full-blown REF submissions.” – Cumulative – only fresh 3/4 outputs • “It is a College responsibility to co-ordinate engagement with this ARA within the College.” Lessons learned from the last one (by UCLan and HEFCE?): • Keep it simple – no, really…. • avoid the last minute panic • start compliant – stay compliant • use the repository • ‘Relax, it’ll be fine…’
