Increasing student satisfaction by closing the feedback loop

One of the biggest challenges universities and student unions’ face today when enhancing the student experience is closing the feedback loop between students and staff. With a constant stream of survey and systems, university staff struggle to demonstrate how they are acting on student feedback in a timely and relevant manner. As a result this leads to students feeling further disengaged and dissatisfied as they feel their voice is not heard or do not adequately supported. Unitu aims to provide an effective way for universities to engage with the student voice and close the feedback loop. We will present findings, best practices, potential consequences of an ineffective feedback system and how we've discovered a great way to close the feedback loop and improve the student experience.

For many years AUT has used the Wimba Voice Authoring tools for a range of learning and teaching support activities. Most recently, and most comprehensively, the VA Presenter function has been used by our School of Languages to support a group of papers for a Translating and Interpreting programme, as well as for a Sign Language qualification. Since the announcement of ‘end of life’ for Voice Authoring and its replacement with Voice Thread, we have been working to understand how we can best replicate the previous functionality. After just a short period of the tools being available to us, we have made some progress in understanding how this new toolset will provide what we want, as well as potentially offering us much more. This session will present some of our initial findings, as well as invite others to discuss their experiences and opinions.

Ray Jones introduces assessing the use of Twitter as part of the nursing undergraduate curriculum at Plymouth University. Students receive lectures on digital professionalism and are asked to set up Twitter accounts to follow nursing organizations. Initially students responded negatively, but assessing Twitter use resulted in over 1500 students creating accounts. While some students found Twitter informative and supportive, others felt time could be spent on more relevant topics. Feedback is generally positive, with the goal of encouraging safe social media use and online learning networks for nurses.

Since 2002 Jisc has been exploring the use of e-portfolio processes, pedagogies, tools and technologies in a range of learning contexts. Here in this workshop we will showcase the findings and key resources from this body of work, with a focus on the results of Jisc-funded research into e-portfolio implementation at scale, including the ‘threshold concept’ model of e-portfolio implementation, and findings of a subsequent study exploring the critical success factors for implementation. There is no one right way to use technology to underpin the curriculum. The range of possibilities can make it difficult for practitioners to know where to start, but as universities and colleges adapt to the new normal of teaching in hybrid environments support is needed to ‘get it right.’ There will be challenges, but you can overcome these if time and resources are directed at the right things. There are lots of misunderstandings about what it means to use technology to support teaching, learning and assessment. The government have clarified changes to the Disabled Students' Allowance (DSA), which mean that universities need to find ways to make teaching and learning more inclusive. This demonstration will enable participants to experience how Synote has been used at the University of Southampton and other universities to address DSA cut by enhancing a lecture recording through providing an online searchable interactive transcript time synchronised with video, audio and notes. Automatic machine captioning is affordable compared with professional human captioning and notetaking and can give just as good results when students are provided with the ability to correct any speech recognition errors in the transcript.

Study goal provides a motivational student learning app to view and record analytics data and is available on Apple and Android. Data explorer provides a simple set of admin tools to assist HEI and FEI’s onboarding into the learning records warehouse, and paves the way for more sophisticated dashboards and analysis, from a range of vendors and open source, to be adopted through our new framework.

Speaker: Anish Bagga, CEO, Unitu. How can the authenticity and representativity of the student voice allow Universities to shape the student experience more effectively? Traditional mechanisms of collecting student feedback are limited. They provide a single snapshot of time, there is filtering and dilution of issues passing through the system and there is difficulty in closing the feedback loop. UCL, Swansea University, University of Greenwich and others now use Unitu, an online student voice platform. Unitu, a Jisc summer of student innovation project, enables students to post and comment about issues anonymously. Student reps to escalate the feedback to the appropriate staff in their department and Departmental staff are able to engage with the feedback in real time. As a result, changes can be made to the student experience faster and more reliably based upon the authentic student voice. This presentation explores two case studies from UCL and Swansea University, outlining their journey of implementing Unitu, the student and staff (positive and negative) experiences of using Unitu, what has and hasn’t worked and the impact it has had in shaping the student experience.
