1) Skimming
• You read fast often skipping words, sentence,
sometime even paragraphs that are not
important and try to get overall understanding
of the text.

• You read the text slowly, words by words and
sentence by sentence, because your aims is
total or near total comprehension.

entertainment, you may read the text
selectively without being bothered by

• Decoding : refers to the process of translating a
printed word into a sound.
• Comprehension : It’s defined as the level of
understanding of a text/message. This
understanding comes form the interaction of
words that are written and how they trigger
knowledge outside the text/message.
• Retention : The condition of retaining (Keeping)
something. It could be in the short term memory
or Long term Memory.
Teacher's role
• Diagnose each student’s reading skill to ascertain
the grade level of the material that the student
can read.
• Diagnose each student’s reading skill to
determine from a total list of skills, which specific
ones have been mastered.
• Be aware of the reading demands and teaching
strategies of the content areas so that these skills
can be highlighted and reinforced.
• Provide instruction in these skills at the
appropriate level of difficulty/
