Supplementary pathway to
Glycolysis
• This is supplementary pathway to glycolysis.
• These operative in the erytrocyte of man and
other mammals.
• Rapaport leubering cycle mainly concerned
with the synthesis of 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate
(2,3-BPG) in RBC.
1,3-Bisphosphoglycerate(1,3-BPG) produced
In Glycolysis is converted to 2,3-BPG by the
Enzyme 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate mutase.
•2,3-BPG is hydrolysed to 3-phosphoglycerate
phosphatase
About 15-25% of the glucose
Converted to lactate in erythrocytes
Goes via 2,3-BPG synthesis.
