What is an Annotated Bibliography?
An Annotated Bibliography is similar to a
Works Cited (Links to an external site.)
list. But, for each entry cited, you also include a summary of the text and one or two sentences that explain how the source is important for your essay.
Why write an Annotated Bibliography?
An annotated bibliography helps you to organize your sources. Not only will you get your Works Cited list written, but you will also have a succinct explanation of each text that you plan to cite and an idea of how the source will be used in your essay. And, because the sources you find will find fairly easily on a 2-3 page annotated bibliography, you can refer to them as you write to remind yourself of the texts you have researched. Then, you can go to the original source text as needed. Also, I’d like to get a sense that you are on the right track with your essay.
What & When will I turn in?
When you turn in your annotated bibliography, I would also like you to include links of any online articles you are using . It is likely that you will have books, too, but you obviously won’t have links for those.
DO NOT COPY THE ABSTRACT FROM A DATABASE. You will need to write your own summary of the text to show your understanding of it. I will be able to see the abstract easily and won’t give you credit for any source that you annotate by merely copying the abstract from the database.
Your annotated bibliography is due by 11:59 PM Wednesday, May 27th.
While that's not for a few weeks, you'll want to be aware of it as you research so you can create the annotated bibliography as you find sources.
Grading the Annotated Bibliography
The annotated bibliography is worth 50 points
To receive credit for the Annotated Bibliography, it will need:
to be formatted in MLA
a "Claim Statement" (basically, a sentence that sums up what the current focus, or thesis is, for your persuasive essay. I understand that your claim statement may change, but I should know what tentative point of view you are taking on your issue and what your specific issue is when I read your claim statement).
at least 5 credible sources that are correctly punctuated and summarized in your own words
one or two sentences per source that explains why the source is important for your issue/essay
If you find sources after you turn in your annotated bibliography, you can add them to the Works Cited List that is submitted with your final draft.

- 2. Welcome Hi everyone! Now that you are getting started with Essay 3, I wanted to talk about coming up with keywords for searching in library databases. There are a few different ways that you can brainstorm keywords when searching. 2
- 3. What are Keywords? ✘ Keywords are 1-2 words or short phrases that you use when searching in library databases or the catalog. ✘ Library databases are very literal so they will only search for the exact keywords you type in. 3
- 4. How Do You Know Which Keywords to Pick? ✘ Choosing keywords is a trial-and-error process. ✘ It is normal and okay to try out multiple keywords to find what you’re looking for (librarians do this all the time). ✘ Don’t get stuck using the same 1-2 keywords over and over again. 4
- 5. Background Research ✘ Doing background research is a great way to find keywords, since it will give you an overview of your research topic. - Background sources are usually written for a general audience and will better explain your topic to someone who does not know a lot about it. ✘ Write down any major words, key people, or key events related to your topic. 5
- 6. Use Database-Supplied Keywords ✘ Some of the SCC Library Databases do give keywords for their articles. ✘ If you ever have an article that gives keywords, write them down to use in a future search. 6
- 7. Example of Database- Supplied Keywords: Gale in Context: Opposing Viewpoints ✘ Some articles will have an “Explore” box with “Related Subjects” listed. ✘ These “Related Subjects” could be used as future keyword searches! 7
- 8. Example of Database-Supplied Keywords: Issues and Controversies ✘ At the end of each article in Issues and Controversies, there will be a section of keywords. ✘ Copy down these keywords to use in future searches! 8
- 9. Example of Database-Supplied Keywords: Points of View ✘ Articles in Points of View will have an “Understanding the Discussion” section, defining important words. ✘ Copy down these keywords to use in future searches! 9
- 10. Use a Thesaurus ✘ Library databases are very literal and they will search for the exact words that you type in. ✘ However, some articles might use a different term to describe the same topic. ✘ Use a Thesaurus to help you find synonyms of your keywords. 10
- 11. Remember Boolean Operators ✘ To search multiple keywords at once, use Boolean Operators, which tell the database to connect the terms together in your search. ✘ There are 3 Boolean Operators - AND—searches for articles that include both of your keywords. - OR—helpful if you are searching for synonyms, because OR looks for either word in the article. - NOT—searches for articles that exclude keywords; helpful for when your keywords have multiple meanings. 11
