4. What is a
Database &
Why Use
One?
A library database is a searchable electronic
index of published, reliable resources.
Databases provide access to a wealth of useful
research materials from academic journals,
newspapers, and magazines.
The information found in databases is either
originally created or comes from different,
reliable sources.
You are required to use one article from a
database in Essay 3
5. Finding an article
from a database
• The databases are grouped together in
a variety of ways, which allows you to
search according to your needs
• Databases Most Used: Academic
OneFile and OmniFile are general
databases with resources on a number
of subjects
• Databases by Subject: You can choose
your subject area and find databases
with information specific to the topic
On the CAC Library Page, Click “Databases” to
see these groups of databases
6. Academic OneFile
• All databases have a standard
search box where you can
enter your keywords.
• You can also search by
Discipline & Subject
• You can get help finding a
topic
7. OmniFile
• Search Box
• Note “Scholarly (Peer
Reviewed) Journals”:
• Scholarly journals
are “peer reviewed”
by experts in the
field. These are the
most reliable sources
• Published Date:
• Currency is incredibly
important; you don’t
want old
information. Put in
years here to narrow
your search by date
8. Other Useful Databases
• Gale Power Search
• Global Issues in Context
• Issues and Controversies
• Newsbank
• Opposing Viewpoints in Context
9. Finding a Book
Source
• You do not have to use an eBook from
CAC's databases.
• You can use a physical book that you own
or one you get from the library.
• You can use an eBook you own or one you
found online.
• The only qualification is that it must be a
book; I don't care where you get the book.
• However, CAC has a number of books
available online, which I will cover here
On the CAC Library Page, click “Databases” to
see these groups of databases. Then click on
“eBooks” to see this list of eBook databases
10. ABC-CLIO
eBook Collection
You can find books on a wide variety of topics
1. Choose a book and
click on the title
2. Read the book online
3. Click “Cite this eBook” and the
copy/paste the citation into your essay
13. Finding a
Website Article
For Essay 3, you must use at least one
article from a website. What I am asking
you to do is just search on the Internet
as you usually do and find a credible
article to use in your essay.
I have included below several videos and
articles and links to help you search
effectively in Google. You, of course, do
not have to use Google, but I focused on
this as the most popular search engine.
14. Finding a Website Source: Google
Watch this video for tips on searching Google effectively: https://youtu.be/R0DQfwc72PM
Watch this video for help using Google Scholar: https://youtu.be/oqnjhjISHFk
And finally, you might check out Google News, which is a search engine that searches specifically in news
websites: news.google.com
This article explains how to use Google
News: https://support.google.com/googlenews/answer/9005601?co=GENIE.Platform%3DDesktop&hl=en
15. Finding a Source of Your Choice
The fourth source can be any
kind of credible source.
For instance, you could include
a second book, a second
database article, or a second
website, or you could use a
credible YouTube video or a
video from Films on Demand in
CAC's databases.
