2. EARTHQUAKE
Earthquake occurs due to shifting of tectonic plates, which causes
shaking of the earth surfaces that may cause destruction.

3. Heavy damage due
to earthquake.

4. • The centre of earthquake is known as epicentre.
• Earthquake is measured on Richter Scale.
• Earth is divided into various seismic zones depending on the plate.
• Seismic zones are numbered from 1-5 of which seismic zone 5 is most
prone to earthquake.
• Earthquake whose epicentre lies on seabed may cause Tsunami.

5. Do’s And Dont’s During Earthquake
• Keep calm and assure others.
• If you are indoor then cover yourself under table, doorway .
• If you are outside then move away from buildings.
• Do not use candles, matches and other open flam source for lighting.
• After earthquake follow advice on transistor and be prepared for after
shocks.

6. RECENT EARTHQUAKES
• Earthquake in Nepal in may 2015 caused widespread destruction and
killing about 10,000 person. It disturbed the day to day life and
economy of Nepal. A peculiarity about this earthquake is it was
followed by many aftershocks.
• Earthquake in Gujrat in 2001 which was of scale of 7.5 on Richter
scale also caused many deaths and destruction.

7. LANDSLIDE
Landslide is also known as landslip that include wide range of ground
movement.

8. • It occurs due to action of gravity on unstable slopes.
Some of the reasons for landslide are –
1) Deforestation
2) Erosion of the top soil
3) Groundwater pressure

10. Do’s And Dont’s For Landslide Risk
Management
• Plant tress on unstable slope.
• Restrict water flow on slopes.
• Do not construct multi storey on loose soil.
• Especially be alert while driving in landslide prone areas.
• Stay alert and awake as many debris flow fatalities occur while
sleeping.
• Listen for any unusual sound like tree cracking or stone sliding.

11. GLOBAL WARMING
It is increase of earth’s surface temperature due to effect of green
house gases.

12. There are several impacts due to increase in global temperature –
1. Rising sea level
2. Melting of glaciers
3. Changing rainfall pattern
4. Ocean acidification etc.

13. It happens due to increase in greenhouse gases such as
1. Carbon dioxide or Monoxide
2. Methane
3. Oxides of Nitrogen
4. Oxides of Sulphur
