Consequences of Global Warming in Earth's Biomes Work done by: Cláudia Borges and Bárbara Madeira Rainforest
1.- What is Global Warming? Global Warming is the increase in the average measured temperature of the Earth’s near-surface air and oceans since mid-20th century. Why is it happening? Global Warming is happening due to the Greenhouse Effect, caused by the burning of fossil fuels (oil, coal, natural gas), and to Deforestation, which is causing the increase in carbon dioxide emissions. What are the symptoms of Global Warming? The symptoms are: a rise in the sea level; extreme weather events; animal and biome extinction; glaciar melting; storms; floods; hurricanes; some areas become too dry for farming; diseases…
We should start using less energy; saving water; throwing the rubbish to the appropriate recycling bins; using less harmful chemicals like herbicides; saving paper; walking; using public transports; using hybrid cars; using solar panels… What should we do about Global Warming? Which are the greenhouse gases? Carbon Dioxide; Methane; Water Vapour; Ozone; CFC’s. 2.- Biome description: Our biome is the RAINFOREST. This biome is located near the Equator, between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn. http://room42.wikispaces.com/file/view/rainforest_map.gif
The average yearly rainfall of our biome is 1750-2000mm (68-78 inches) and the average temperature is not higher than 34ºC and not lower than 20ºC. The average humidity is between 77% and 88%. In monsoonal areas, there is a real dry season. Rainforests now cover less than 6% of the Earth’s land surface. More than a half of the world’s plant and animal species live in tropical rainforests. Rainforests produce 40% of Earth's oxygen. 3.- Interesting facts about our biome:
4.- Plants that are common in our biome: Bengal Bamboo; Bougainvillea; Curare; Coconut Tree; Durian; Jambu; Kapok Tree; Mangrove Strangler Figs; Tualang… www.biodiversityinternational.org/publications/web_version/572/p051c.jpg www.wagonwheelcafe.com/plants/image/bougainvillea1.jpg www.newbotany.com/Portals/12/BCDETropicke/Chondredendon%20tomentosum%20=%20Curare.JPG www.accessgambia.com/photo/palm-coconut-tree.jpg www.plantogram.com/images/wax_jambu_a.jpg
5.- Animals that are common in our biome: African Forest Elephant; Bengal Tiger; Chimpanzee; Common Palm Civet (Musang); Dawn Bat; Golden Lion Tamarin; Harpy Eagle; Jambu Fruit Dove; King Cobra; Kinkajou; Linns Sloth; Orangutan; Proboscics Monkey; Red-shanked Douc Langur; Silvery Gibbon; Slender Loris; Sumatran Rhinoceros; Toco Toucan; Vampire Bat; Wagler’s Pit Viper… http://animais.com.sapo.pt/Tigre4.jpg www.animalport.com/rainforest-animals/img/jambu_frdove.jpg www.tropicarium.se/image/waglers_huggorn.jpg www.gonomad.com/gallery/brazil/tucano-bico-aberto-de-frent.jpg
As a result of Global Warming, Rainforests can change in several ways such as: Animals, plants and habitats will become extinct, due to the extreme temperatures, dry/poor soils, storms, floods, droughts, hurricanes and diseases, caused by mosquitos. 6.- Changes in our biome caused by Global Warming: The End
