Deforestation in Jamaica is primarily caused by mining, agriculture, and tourism. Over 75% of Jamaica's original forest cover has been lost, mainly due to bauxite mining, agriculture like coffee plantations, and coastal development for tourism. Bauxite mining requires complete removal of vegetation and topsoil over large areas. It also indirectly causes further deforestation by enabling access by loggers and others once roads are built. If not curtailed, continued deforestation threatens water resources, biodiversity, and traditional livelihoods in Jamaica.
