Desertification
Group 3

It is a process of desert expansion. In total, deserts consume almost 6 million
hectares of land per year. Developing countries are most affected by
desertification, but industrialized countries are also at risk.
What is desertification?
Causes of desertification
 There can be many reasons for desertification - they are undoubtedly influenced
by: climate change (warming), as well as human activities that are carried out in an
uncontrolled and reflective manner. Inadequate farming and deforestation
(removal of trees) have the greatest impact on the intensity of desertification,
which quickly leads to soil sterilization - turning it into a desert.
 increasing desert and semi-desert areas, which leads to a reduction in the area
of agricultural land possible.
 accelerated soil erosion, which leads to a decrease in soil fertility and a decrease in
its productivity.
 occurrence of hazardous dust storms.
 increase in soil salinity
 the destruction of ecosystems - the natural vegetation cover and habitats of many
animals.
 carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere by releasing nutrients from the soil.
Effects of desertification
What can you do to eliminate
desertification?
 no cutting down trees
 afforestation
 irrigation
 planting vegetation in the valleys of periodic rivers
 creating strips of trees and shrubs between fields
 Water consumption saving
