The document provides information and questions to prepare Danish students for a visit to a local furniture company called Qvist Møbler. It includes details about the company, suggested questions to ask, potential math problems related to the company's operations, and ideas for a short video and worst case scenarios about what could happen if math is not properly applied in the company. The students from different countries will collaborate using a shared Google Doc to plan and coordinate their preparation and presentation.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2. Preparations for the teams before the mobility
meeting in Denmark
To prepare for the visit to the local company which the Danish team members
have chosen and arranged for, all members of each team must contribute with
ideas and questions for the business company.
You will get access to your powerpoint presentation, there will be one for each
team, by a link on a Google doc which I upload on our facebook group right after
this webinar. (I will explain how Google docs works.)
Students from France, Greece and Spain will write in red,
students from Denmark will write in blue,
teachers will write in black.
3. About the company
Here the Danes will make a description of the company
Qvist Møbler
Address?
Siggårdsvej 2, 6818 Årre
Make furniture - which kind?
-Chairs, tables, speakers
Add pictures
4. Questions for company - remember your colors
What kind of company? The Danes might have answered this question in the former slide.
How many employees? Kvist Industries A/S has in total around 700 employees which are divided over Denmark and Latvia.
Which type of employees work in your company? 85-90 % production employee 10-15% office employees and salesman's
direktion
Which education do you need to get employed?
-productions employees = woodcutting machinist
-office employees = offices education
Salesman = sales education
Is it important to know math to work at your company? very important, because if we can't do math we do the things wrong,
and the firm loose money, and you lose your job
How can you get this education? It might be different in the other countries.
you have to have a
5. ... more questions for the company.....
Does the education provided covers all the aspects of the work or there are other
skills only gained through working in the company? (job secrets)
name a skill gained from school education (maths) that is very important in your
work.
In furniture construction how important is geometry and what geometrical
constructions are used?
6. More Questions
( Manto M.)
State a mathematical tool learned from school that is important in your work.
Are there any skills gained only through work and not from your education?
What is the use of geometry in a furniture company? or mathematics in general.
7. Ideas for the short movie.....
It is difficult to imagine... but try please.
- What there can go wrong, if they get the wrong objects.
- If they don’t set the machine right, they gets the object's wrong.
- A student tramped on the mat, and then the machine stopped, and it deleted
all the objects, and the worker couldn’t remember the objects, so he/she
should measure on another furniture, and then they lost time and money,
because of that stupid student.
8. Worst case scenario - write your ideas here.
What would happen if the employees don’t know their math?
-if they make the things wrong, they gonna throw it out and they lose money.
-The production cost, gets too high, when they throw too much out.
-
Imagine the worst case scenario. When is math important?
-If you can’t do math, you have to close the company
-Math is important all the time
9. Math in the company
You must create 5 to 10 math problems, which relate to the company you visite.
1. if the furniture cost around 1500,- to make, and they sell it for 2000,- Then they earn 500,- but there isn’t so many
there wanna buy the furniture, they lose money. so if the company makes 157 pieces and sells only 82 how much
money will it get and what will be the loss?
2. to build a table we need 7 pieces of wood. each piece costs 214,-. we need to build 234 tables. how many pieces of
wood will we need and how much will it cost to make them? if 1,- is 0,13 euros what is the money in euros?
The math problems must be copied and passed around to all participants of the
project on the Friday where you show your video. After your presentation of your
short film the participants must solve your math problems and finally you will
check that we all understood and completed the task.
10. Ideas for “math in the company”
Prices-analogous to dimensions
Prices-analogous to quality
wages
material price

taxes
to measure dimensions and angles
