This document provides biographical information about several famous mathematicians - Fermat, Galois, Hilbert, Pascal, and Oliva Sabuco - who are involved with the plot of the Spanish thriller film "Fermat's Room". Evariste Galois was a revolutionary mathematician who died in a duel at age 20. David Hilbert made major contributions to geometry and helped establish modern mathematical logic. Blaise Pascal made discoveries in probability theory and invented an early mechanical calculator. Oliva Sabuco was a 16th century Spanish philosopher and possible author of an early work combining science and philosophy.
After completing his studies in Madrid, Rizal went to Paris and Germany in order to
specialize in ophthalmology. He particularly chose this branch of medicine because he wanted to
cure his mother’s eye ailment. He served as assistant to the famous oculists of Europe. He also
continued his travels and observations of European life and customs, government and laws in
Paris, Heidelberg, Leipzig, and Berlin. In Berlin, capital of then unified Germany, he met and
befriended several top German scientists, Dr. Feodor Jagor, Dr. Adolp B. Meyer, Dr. Hans
Meyer, and Dr. Rudolf Virchow. His merits as a scientist were recognized by the eminent
scientists of Europe.

Andreas Schleicher presents at the OECD webinar ‘Digital devices in schools: detrimental distraction or secret to success?’ on 27 May 2024. The presentation was based on findings from PISA 2022 results and the webinar helped launch the PISA in Focus ‘Managing screen time: How to protect and equip students against distraction’ https://www.oecd-ilibrary.org/education/managing-screen-time_7c225af4-en and the OECD Education Policy Perspective ‘Students, digital devices and success’ can be found here - https://oe.cd/il/5yV
2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
Synthetic Fiber Construction in lab .pptxPavel ( NSTU)
Synthetic fiber production is a fascinating and complex field that blends chemistry, engineering, and environmental science. By understanding these aspects, students can gain a comprehensive view of synthetic fiber production, its impact on society and the environment, and the potential for future innovations. Synthetic fibers play a crucial role in modern society, impacting various aspects of daily life, industry, and the environment. ynthetic fibers are integral to modern life, offering a range of benefits from cost-effectiveness and versatility to innovative applications and performance characteristics. While they pose environmental challenges, ongoing research and development aim to create more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. Understanding the importance of synthetic fibers helps in appreciating their role in the economy, industry, and daily life, while also emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and innovation.
How to Create Map Views in the Odoo 17 ERPCeline George
The map views are useful for providing a geographical representation of data. They allow users to visualize and analyze the data in a more intuitive manner.
2. Fermat`s Room
It is a thriller about
maths, isn´t it amazing?
It was made in 2007 by
Luis Piedrahita and
Rodrigo Sopeña
It has a lot of now-
famous spanish actors
and actresses
9. Evariste Galois
“Unfortunately what is little
recognized is that the most
worthwhile scientific books are
those in which the author
clearly indicates what he does
not know; for an author most
hurts his readers by concealing
difficulties.”
11. Final days
• He died in a duel
• he was shot in
the abdomen,
abandoned by his
opponents.
• He stayed up all night
writing letters to his
republicans friends and
to his lover.
12. theory
• Relationship to describe how the roots
of a polynomial relate to one and
another.
• There is no general algebraic method for
solving polynomial equations of any
degree greater than four
13. Life
• 1823 entered Lycèe Lois le Grand
• Interest in maths at 14 years
• 1828 Ècole normal
14. His father
• Was a Republican
• Was head of Bourg-la-Reine‘s liberal party
• He became mayor of the village
• committed suicide after a bitter political dispute with
the village priest
16. David Hilbert
“A mathematical theory is not to be
considered complete until you have
made it so clear that you can explain
it to the first man whom you meet on
the street.”
17. Biography
Hilbert (23 January 1862 – 14
February 1943, 81 years old)
was born in Königsberg (Prusia)
what today would be Kaliningrad
(Rusia) and died in Gottingen
(Germany)
He studied at Könisberg
university, where he obtained his
doctorate in 1885
Then, he became professor in
the university of Gottingen,
which was the most important
center of mathematical research
at that time.
19. Curiosities
The city he was born in, Königsberg,
was a place of high intellectual
contribution to the world. It was
Kant´s birthplace and also there
was an important school of
physics.
At university, he met a lot of amazing
people influenced his work,
people such as: Riemann,
Hurwitz, Gauss and a lot more.
21. Character in Fermat´s Room
His character in the movie
is played by Lluis Homar,
who is a well known actor
in both cinema and
theatre worlds.
He also played in the
movie: ``The Pelayos´´
which involves maths too.

for those who want to believe
and enough shadows to blind
those who don’t”
23. Biography
Born 19 June 1623; Clermont-Ferrand, France.
Died 19 August 1662 (39); Paris, France.
Mathematician, physicist, inventor and philosopher.
He entered to the mathematics’ world at a very early age.
24. Contribution to mathematics
Pascal’s Triangle
● It consists of a
representation of the
binomial coefficients
forming a triangle.
● It’s named after
Pascal although other
mathematicians had
already studied it in
India, Persia and
China.
26. Pascal’s Calculator
● It was called The Arithmetic
Calculator and later it
became the Pascaline.
● Pascal designed the
machine in 1642, after 50
prototypes.
● He designed the machine to
add and subtract two
numbers directly and to
perform multiplication and
division through repeated
addition or subtraction.
27. Curiosities
Pascal made the Pascaline to help his father
with his work, who was a tax collector.
○ After his death, an autopsy, revealed that Pascal
suffered from tuberculosis, stomach cancer, or a
combination of both, he also had several injuries
on his brain.
He created the Theory of Probability with
Fermat.
28. In the film...
a man called Pascal receives a letter with a math puzzle.
When he solves it, he is told to arrive at a specific place and
time.
The actor who plays Pascal is Santi Millán.
