95% of the questionnaires were given to
females. This is simply because the target
audience for the magazine will be predominantly
female. However, there may be a male
readership for the magazine, however small.
Therefore, 5% of the questionnaires were given
to males. The ratio of female to male
questionnaires gives a good representative view
of the target audience of the magazine.
Age wise, 30% of the questionnaires
were given to the 12 and under category, 30% of
the questionnaires were given to the 13-14 year
olds, 30% were given to 15-16 year olds and 10%
were given to the 17 and older category. I
planned these ratios of questionnaires
throughout each age group to ensure each age
group of my chosen target audience is
represented. People aged 17 and over is not
within my chosen target audience, however
there may be a minority group of older teenagers
within the magazine’s readership. Therefore, to
ensure the representation of the target audience
is correct, I gave 10% of the questionnaires to
people aged 17 and over.
Do you currently read a Music Magazine?

When asked if they currently
read a music magazine, 65% said they did
read one, whereas 35% said they did not.
This shows that quite a large proportion
of the target audience are quite fanatical
about music and the pop genre. This
shows that the age group of the target
audience for my magazine are willing to
spend money on buying a music
magazine and that they are interested by
the bands and artists who they want to
read about.
Of the 13 people of 20 who said
they do read a music magazine, 10 of
them said they read the pop magazine
‘We Love Pop’. 2 of them said they read
‘Top of the Pops’ magazine and just 1
person said they read ‘Just Pop’. We Love
Pop is the most popular magazine
amongst the target audience which
suggests my magazine should take more
inspiration from We Love Pop, rather
than Top of the Pops or Just Pop.

When asked which boy band
was their favourite out of One
Direction, The Wanted and Union J, 60%
said One Direction, 30% said Union J, and
just 10% said The Wanted are their
favourite. From these results, I may be
more inclined to feature One Direction in
my magazine, rather than The Wanted.
From a long list of pop bands
and artists, the questionnaire asked each
person to tick three of the bands or
artists that they would most rather see
featuring on the front cover of a pop
magazine. The clear favourite was Justin
Bieber, which shows he is an artist that
my target audience would want to read
about. The next most popular choices
were; Union J, One Direction, Little Mix
and Conor Maynard. Boy bands and girl
bands seem to be a very popular feature
of the pop genre amongst the target
audience. Therefore, I may focus on a
band in my magazine.

From the two choices given, an
interview with artists seems to be the article
that many people would like to read. 50% said
they would prefer to read an interview with
artists but, not too far behind, 35% said they
would like to read an article focusing on
celebrity gossip. 15% suggested other ideas for
articles that may also be popular with the
target audience. They suggested an article that
talked about embarrassing stories would be
entertaining to read. It was also suggested that
instead of standard article, there would be a
quiz that could test you to see how big of a ‘1D
fan’ you are. I like this idea as it seems very age
appropriate for the target audience of the
magazine.
50% said the most they would pay for
a music magazine is £2, closely followed by the
35% who said they would pay £3. I think the
price the target audience would be willing to
pay will depend on the issue of the magazine.
For example, they may be willing to pay more if
they are given cover mount, such as free makeup and posters.

When asked how important music was
in their lives, 95% of them said it was very
important to them. Common reasons given for
why music was so important was that they ‘have
to listen to music everyday’ or that music is their
‘whole life’. After reading the response on the
questionnaire that said music was not that
important, I realised that the person still
admitted that she would often listen to music
when not feeling her best. Music seems to be
very important to majority of those who
answered this questionnaire which suggests they
may be quite keen on reading a pop magazine.
When asked what the last single or
album they had brought, all of the answers given
were names of very mainstream bands and
artists who you would expect to be on a pop
magazine front cover. The most common answer
given was Justin Bieber, which reflects that his
fan-base is amongst the age of the target
audience for this magazine. These results also
show that boy bands such as Union J and One
Direction are very popular amongst the target
audience.
The results of my questionnaire confirmed a lot about my
target audience that I had already thought about them. By giving the
questionnaires to mostly females who are in their young teens, it
allowed me to get an accurate representation of the target audience of
my magazine.
Of the questions ten questions that were asked in the
questionnaire, none of the general responses were surprising.
Instead, the responses just confirmed what I thought about the target
audience of the magazine. However, by confirming my original
thoughts about the target audience through the questionnaire, it has
helped me to develop my ideas about the magazine. By confirming the
idea that an interview with an artist would attract the target
audience, it has prompted me to think about what sort of focus that
the interview would take.
What I wanted to find out most about the target audience was
which artists were their favourite and who they would want to see in a
pop magazine. For example, one question confirmed to me that the
artist ‘Justin Bieber’ was who the target audience would most want to
see on the front cover of the magazine.
