QUESTIONNAIRE ANALYSIS
       By Ryan Smith
We handed out questionnaire’s to people to see what they liked about thrillers. We did this to
research thrillers and try to make our thriller opening as good as possible. The questionnaire
helped us choose our target audience and the genre of thriller we are going to use.
QUESTION 1 – WHAT WOULD YOU EXPECT A THRILLER TO BE
ABOUT.
• For question 1 the answers were roughly the same. Most people’s answers said
a good thriller should build tension and suspense and keep you on the edge of
your seat through out the whole film. It should also make you wonder what's
going to happen next and make the audience asked questions about what's
happening. It should have a good plot twist which may confuse the audience.
Some other answers said that a thriller should include a protagonist and an
antagonist. Lastly it should keep the viewer asking questions until the end where
the plot is revealed and everything makes sense.
QUESTION 2 – WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE TYPE OF GENRE?
• tick box – horror, comedy, romance, thriller, sci-fi or other
• From our questionnaire we found that the favourite genre was thriller with
other half of our participants saying thriller. Then comedy, followed by
horror, sci-fi, psychological and no-one we asked answered romance.
Showing a horror thriller would be a good genre to use, and that no-one
would like a romantic thriller. We have chosen to use a psychological
thriller, as we think that it is the most effective genre and the easiest to
  express.
QUESTION 3 – WHAT DO YOU THINK THE BEST LOCATION OF
A THRILLER WOULD BE?
• Tick box – Abandoned House, Beach, Forest, Inner City and Other (please
  state)
• The answers we got for this question were mixed between abandoned house
and forest. We chose to do it in a shed and a house going with the theme of
abandoned house as this was the most liked by the people that filled out our
  questionnaire.
                               Location

                                              Abandoned House
                                              Beach
                                              Forest
                                              Inner City
QUESTION 4 – WHAT MUSIC BEST SUITS A THRILLER?

• R&B, Fast, Classical, Eerie, Hip-hop or other.
• This question was obvious to what the answer would be but we though we
should check anyway. We are going to use eerie and creepy music and
sudden sounds in our thriller to make it more jumpy and keep the audience
on the edge of their seats.
                                    Music

                                                    R&B
                                                    Fast
                                                    Classical
                                                    Eerie Music
                                                    Other
QUESTION 5 – HOW OFTEN DO YOU VISIT THE CINEMA?
• Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Yearly.
• We asked this to see how often our participants visit the cinema to know if
they like films and if they pay to watch them.

                                    Cinema

                                                              Daily
                                                              Weekly
                                                              Monthly
                                                              Yearly
QUESTION 6 – WHAT AGE GROUP ARE YOU IN?
• -10 years, 10-15 years, 16-21 years, 22-30 years, 30-50 years, 51-70
  years, 71+
• We asked people for their age so we know what age group go to the cinema and
watch films, as were aiming our thriller opening to be a 15 rating, we asked
more 16-21 year olds. This is because they visit the cinema most often and
spend the most money on films.

                                    Age
                                                      Under 10
                                                      10 to 15
                                                      16 to 21
                                                      22 to 30
                                                      31 to 50
                                                      51 to 70
QUESTION 7 – WHAT AGE RATING OF A FILM DO YOU WATCH
THE MOST?
• U, PG, 12A, 12, 15, 18
• We asked this question to see what people watched the most to help us
decide the age rating of our film. We were thinking about a 12a but most
people watch 15’s so we decided to make our thriller a 15.

                                  Age Rating

                                                                    U
                                                                    PG
                                                                    12A
                                                                    12
                                                                    15
                                                                    18
QUESTION 8 – IF YOU WERE TO MAKE A THRILLER, WHAT
WOULD IT BE ABOUT.
• There were many different answers to this ranging across the different sub-
genres. Most of the answers were to do with murder and suspense. For it to
be jumpy and mysterious. With a psycho as the villain and an average
person as the hero. One we liked was about betrayal and revenge between
to antagonist and protagonist. The best response was about a weird
paedophile and we have decided to use this as our idea for our opening but
  elaborate on the paedophile idea.
QUESTION 9 – LIST 3 THINGS YOU FIND SCARY IN A
HORROR THRILLER?
• We got many answers to this including; murder; darkness; blood; fear; jumpy
scenes; paranormal; tense music; remote locations and many more, we have
tried to make our opening include as many of these as possible to make our
thriller as good as we can but its hard to get them all in.
QUESTION 10 – WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE TYPE OF
THRILLER? (E.G. PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER)
• People could choose their own answer for this and with psychological being the most
popular we have decided to make our opening a psychological thriller. This will make the
film more popular and give a better target audience.
