The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Question 7
1. QUESTION 7, LOOKING
BACK AT YOUR
PRELIMINARY TASK DO
YOU FEEL YOU HAVE
LEARNT IN THE
PROGRESSION FROM IT
TO THE FULL PRODUCT?
2. The preliminary brief.
Our brief was to create a 30 second long film that involves someone
entering a room, speaking to another character and leaving the
room. The film must include match on match action, shot reverse
shot and the 180 degree line rule. The film must also be accurate so
continuity is key.
3. The main task brief
The brief of the main task was to come up with an opening two
minutes of a film that is based on one of your own original idea. It
must include a title sequence, dialogue, varied camera angles/ shots
and lots of different editing techniques.
4. The preliminary task
Before the preliminary task both myself and my group had limited
experience with working with cameras and editing software such as
final cut so in order for us to get used to working with the cameras
we were given an opportunity to get familiar with the equipment, we
did this by shooting footage such as pans and tilts, very shakily and
often we wouldn’t be able to turn the camera on the tripod properly
so the film would look quiet jumpy and unprofessional. By practicing
these techniques we were able to get better through experience so
that we were prepared for out preliminary task.
5. Main Task
As our main task was set for a longer duration than our preliminary
task we able to experiment with the skills that we had already
learned and explore new and different techniques when filming and
when editing as we had more chance to explore the tools provided
for us on final cut and we also had more time to shoot different shots
so we knew which ones worked well and which ones didn’t. Also we
did a lot of research on similar films to the film we were wanting to
make so we were able to use this research to create new ideas on
ways of doing things.
6. Because we had the preliminary task to familiarise ourselves with the
cameras and other equipment we were able to see the
improvements we had made when we filmed the main task a we
were able to film the shots more steadily so that they didn’t appear
shaky.
7. Improvements
Because we had the opportunity to improve our techniques' with the
camera from the experience we had with them in the preliminary
task we were able to shoot shots more accurately so we were able to
increase the amount of shots we could get. We were also able to use
a wider range of shots and camera angles as well as shooting more
specific shots such as point of view shots, close ups, long shots and
establishing shots.
8. We were also able to use a wider range of characters so we had more
than just two characters to shoot, also because we were allowed
more time on our main task we were able to use a wider range of
scenes and locations so that we were just filming in the same place
with the same people all the time, this helped create variation in our
shots.
9. We made quite a lot of differences in our techniques we used based
on the experience we received from the preliminary exercise. We
were also able to use a range of different tools and ideas to make our
main project look professional post production some of these
included adding different transitions in between shots such as fade in
and fade out. We were also able to use transitions of shots e.g. on
the running scene in the final film there are two groups of people in
two different locations running, by mixing these together it creates
the effect of a faster pace scene. We were also able to tint the colour
of the footage so that the lighting looked similar and to create
effects such as Yuri’s glowing hands, which linked in with the sci-fi
genre.
