Live Lounge Magazine Evaluation By Ed Silverton
[object Object],My magazine develops the forms and conventions of a real media product by including some of the key features that they contain; Masthead, Kicker, Straplines, Date, Barcode and Images have all been included on the front cover. As the genre of my magazine was different I thought that because the images are based on some live music and the conventions are the same; Writing in columns, page numbers and emphasising certain text. The use of images in these magazines are the same as it shows live performance and it also follows the genre of the magazine. The Mise-en-scene in both magazines is roughly the same as there are wearing casual clothes and the props include musical equipment which relate to the genre of live music. The language is similar in both articles as it focuses on the band/group but, there is a mixture of both formal and informal language as I wanted all people to read it. The layout of my double age spread is also similar to that of an original magazine. The colour scheme is different but the writing has been kept in columns along with page numbers and a balance of writing to images to break the page up.
How does your media product represent particular social groups? ,[object Object],[object Object],The social group that I wanted to represent was anyone who likes to go and listen to live performances and anyone who likes listening to different types of music from different background and hearing someone put their own style into it. The messages that my magazine gives out about people who like live music are that they enjoy what they are doing. They have a passion for music . The typical stereotype for someone buying this magazine would be rock/jazz/blues/R&B music lover. Someone who taps their foot when they engaged in the music. It could also be that any age range can appreciate live performances as live performances are totally different from recorded CD’s where voices can be edited .
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? The media institution that I would choose to distribute my magazine would be Bauer Media Group. This is because they have already established themselves as a publishers for Kerrang Magazine who I am basing my article on and they would be able to take the product to Europe, USA, China and Russia as well as the United Kingdom if I decided to make it a global magazine. Who would be the audience for your media product? The target audience for my magazine would be both male and female aged between 30 and 60. The style of music that the magazine would be focusing on will be Live Music (performances) but the genre will be varied from Jazz to Rock to Blues and even R&B. Although my magazine was going to be for the local community I feel that if I was to successfully able to get these publishers to publish my magazine I would consider allowing them to send it around the world, purely for the reason that it would almost certainly increase sales, but also that people around the world can see a style of music they might not have though of.
How did you attract/address you audience? I attracted and addressed my audience by first selecting the right target audience for my music magazine. The audience would be the community in Birmingham because it will be local magazine. Eventually if it did sell then I would sell it in shops around England. As it is a local magazine people may be more inclined to buy it because it is about what is happening around them in their local community and by doing this it is enabling them to see something that they might not have known ever happened. I had to choose the colors carefully for the cover and the rest of the magazine because I didn’t want it to look out of place with the genre and I wanted it to appeal to the eye of the customer who would buy it. I also attracted my audience by featuring local bands in the area that they may or may not know, which may incline them to find out about them or go and support them at a concert, and also by adding the names of some famous musicians; Duke Ellington. Frank Sinatra and Jimi Hendrix would appeal to people who like their music and if they saw there was a feature on them they would be interested. I have also made sure the magazine targets the people in the local area by including the image of a band that are base in Birmingham.
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? Throughout the process of constructing my music magazine I have become much more confident using Photoshop. This program has helped me change the visual impact of images to make them look more appealing and it has also enabled me to create a front cover, contents page and double page spread that I am really happy with. I have also learnt about the process of how a magazine is put together and how such a small part like the Masthead can decide the genre. There are many parts to a magazine and depending on what part of it you look at, different techniques and methods will have been used to decide where the image goes, which straplines to use and what colour scheme suits the genre. At first I didn’t see the point in planning the magazine but it became really helpful overall because it gave me further ideas of how I wanted it to look. Also the planning stage was of great importance because it allowed me to alter anything I wasn’t happy with before I made the final copy.
Looking back at the preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? I have learnt that the skills used to make the college magazine were similar to that of the music magazine but not in as much depth. This is because the music magazine will be for the general public and the target audience and genre were completely different. However, the college magazine enabled me to have a look at Photoshop and see how things can be manipulated and changed at the press of a button. It was a lot harder to think of the target audience for my magazine as the music could be listened to by all people but because of the band on the cover it would mainly target people from 30-60 years old. The composition of the photos for the music magazine, differ from that of the college magazine because I had to think about who the magazine would be aimed at, and the images would have to represent that and the genre of music.
