EVALUATION QUESTION 2
How does your media product represent
particular social groups?
CLOTHING
The outfit used on the front page of my music magazine
fits the pop music genre as it is clothing people would
wear out to parties or to music concerts. The image I
have used gives my magazine the 'pop princess' feel as
my artist models an all black sequin dress from Miss
Selfridge, with bright pink lipstick and long, blonde hair.
The clothing that I have chosen for my artist to wear
automatically relates to a particular social group and this
group is the 'Townies' as they usually shop within shops like
Miss Selfridge and Topshop etc. The cut out triangles on
the side of the dress is a common trend when it comes to
the 'Townies' and their clothing.
CLOTHING
In the issue of 'Billboard' where Miley Cyrus
features on the front page, we can see
that she is also wearing all black clothing
on a white background, this shows that
wearing all black is a common occurring
theme in the pop music industry. I
decided that my artists would model dark
clothing on a white background in order
to emphasise the contrast between the
dark and light colours on my front page
to draw attention from readers.
EXPRESSION
The facial expression of my artist on my front page is very 'starry eyed' as if she is day
dreaming which connotes that she see's her life as a dream. Her lips are slightly parted
copying the facial expression from Rihanna's 'Rolling Stones' music magazine feature.
Rihanna's facial expression on this magazine feature comes across as being seductive
to attract the male readers and all audiences are targeted with the use of her eye
contact. My artists' gaze is directed at the reader to make direct eye contact
captivating the attention of the audience and enticing the readers to purchase the
magazine.
Slightly parted lips
LIGHTING
When considering the type of lighting used for my front page image, I
noticed through my music magazine research that many pop music
magazines have bright images so that they are striking to the audience.
Therefore, I enhanced the brightness of my front page altogether to make it
more eye catching and appealing to the reader.
The images that I have used throughout
my contents page and double page
spread are all very bright images to
represent pop music as it is seen as
being a lively, bubbly and chilled out
genre and I wanted my magazine to
reflect this. I have used one slightly
darker image on my contents page to
show the contrast between the smaller
dark image and the bigger bright
image to enhance the diversity
between colours.
HAIR & MAKEUP
A feature that makes my music magazine relevant to different social groups are elements of
makeup such as lipstick colour. My artists models a bright pink lipstick as this is the common 'barbie-
like' trend that according to UK Tribes many mainstream social groups such as Townies, Chavs, Fan
Girls and Blingers wear. The hair style that my artists models is also very mainstream. Her hair is
straightened with slight flicks at the end to give her hair a wavy effect as this is the current trend
flow in the mainstream society.
