1. Question 5 – How did you attract/address your audience?
The target audience for my music magazine was teenagers, aged 16 and above. The gender I have
chosen to aim my magazine at is both female and male as this widens the range of people who will
buy the magazine. However, females are mainly represented through-out the magazine as the
photographs are all of females.
Through-out the photographs, high key lighting is used as it creates a friendly, upbeat feel to the
magazine which will draw in both males and females. The models are wearing red lipstick which
connatates pleasure and lust which will attract males. I have used photos of females as my main
target audience is females therefore the images will draw in female readers as they may aspire to be
like them.
The house style for my magazine would attract both genders are the colours grey, white and red are
neutral colours which both genders would be appealed to. Through my market research, I found that
most music magazines use neutral colours as the target audience is both genders. Therefore I used
neutral colours as I want both genders to read my magazine so that there is a wider population that
my magazine will be distributed to.
The model on the front cover is using direct eye contact which draws in the readers as it makes them
feel compelled to read the magazine to find out her story. I have used the Guttenberg design
principle on the front cover so that the reader can establish which parts are most important in the
magazine. For example, in the strong fallow area, the model is places here so that the reader can
establish that she is going to be an important part of the magazine. Also, by placing her in the strong
fallow area, it attracts the male readers as this is where they are going to look next and by seeing a
pretty female on the cover, they are most likely to read the magazine to see more of her and read
about her.
On the contents page, I have used features such as ‘the parklife weekender’ to attract my target
audience as this is a big event which most teenagers would attend. It is also a mixed gender event so
both male and female audiences will be interested. In the regular section, I have used a rhetorical
question, ‘hot or not?’ to attract the male audience of my magazine. This is because a stereotypical
view of teenage boys is that they tend to look at other females and ‘rate’ them on their looks. By
putting this at the end of the magazine, it will make them feel like they need to read other pages in
the magazine whilst they are flicking through the pages to get to this particular page. I have also
used a pull quote from the main article on the contents page in order to attract the female audience.
For example, “I think it’s every girls dream to be able to live this lifestyle!” would attract females as it
makes them intrigued as to know what sort of lifestyle she is talking about.
