Magazine Course Work
 For my media course work I will complete three sections.
 Research, analyzing my target audience, gathering material from existing
magazines and looking into the main productions of a music magazine in the
genre that I would like my magazine to represent. I will be labelling the
conventions of magazine covers, contents pages and double page spreads as
well compare and contrast them, specifying the factors of logos and genres.
After doing so, I will complete my preliminary task and broad cast my
knowledge and understanding from my previous research.
 Planning, reinstating the process and difficulties in completing the
preliminary task, I will then start to develop my ideas based on my research
of the magazine genres, logos and my target audience. I will create a
magazine cover, contents page and double page that would appeal to my
audience range and genre of my choice.
 When I have thoroughly completed these section I would then complete an
evaluation critiquing what I have done and what I could have done better

They tend to occupy positions of
responsibility in society. Their investment in

reward and prestige, and will often seek out
the best, because that is what they feel they
deserve. On the other hand, they also seek
out caring and protective brands.
Materialistic, acquisitive people, who are
driven by others’ perceptions of them rather

what others perceive as being superficial:
image, appearance, persona, charisma and
fashion.

choices are ‘we’ rather than ‘me’. They are
the mainstream of society. They are the
largest consumer group of people across
the world. They respond to big established
brands, to ‘family’ brands and to offers of
value for money
Audience Profile :
Who Are They? My sixth form magazine will be aimed at female
students. My reason for this is because I have
more knowledge and understanding of this
group and I want to include things like
fashion/beauty also life opportunities.
Age group: 16-18
Contents: Fashion, latest trends, how to look formal but
fashionable attending school
Life: going abroad, experiences and changes
Four Consumers: Aspirers
Socio- economic Group: People at the lowest level of income, Group E

After carrying out my survey I have discovered that:
►The most popular genre was music and then the rest of the genres
in the chart were equivalent to each other
►The average of magazines bought on a basis is weekly
►Thing my focus group looked forward to the most in a magazine
would be the freebies
►The average that they would pay for their magazine would range
from £1.00-£2.00
►The majority of females in the group liked bright vibrant colors whilst
the male majority liked soft subtle colors.

 My double page spread will consist of
the conventions on this mockup. I
made the page simple because I
wanted it to be direct and straight to
the point. The three column will bee
filled with contents in correlation to the
cover star told from her point of view in
first person The header will be a direct
link to the cover pages main story. The
quote will be relevant to the story and
the cover star as a whole. All these
ideas are lead by the that fact that I
want this to be personal and have it
capture the target audience of who I
intend, female aspires , aged 16-18.

Preliminary
I have manipulated to make it more
appealing and coherent to my magazine.
The image on the left is what I intend to
use for the cover of my sixth-form
magazine . Reason being ,the
composition and costume of the cover
star directly corresponds to my mock
cover.
For my double-page spread I chose this image
about because of the mode of the address is
direct and can make a personal connection to
the audience this is also shown through the
facial expression. Using Photoshop, I edited the
image to create the sense of reminiscence and
fulfilment by dulling the colors and brightening
up her face to highlight her smile.
Preliminary:
 My initial masthead, I wanted a playful font that
could attract a young mature audience but I when
In the process of making my cover, I started to
doubt it .The font, Tekton Pro Ext, was too childish
for my magazine cover and the name was a bit to
vague on targeting my audience.
Masthead
Idea
s
The 6th
F6rm Recovering from my last masthead, I decided to keep the ‘6’ and used
use a but a of word play adding the ‘form’ to it. By enlarging the ‘6’ I
created an ‘o’ for the word ‘form’. The font I used to execute this
masthead ‘Adobe Fangsong Std R’ was mature enough to pass for my
audience but I felt as though it was still a but childish because of the
lower case letters , so I altered it in my final out come.
 This is the final masthead produced for my
preliminary task. As stated in my previous
explanation, I kept the font and capitalized all
letters in my mast head. I tilted the ‘6’ to
balance out the line between mature and child
like and thus my masthead
Preliminary
This is the final product of my preliminary magazine cover. I stuck with the mock ups structure ,
using a strong cover star supporting the concept of the cover and the appeal to my audience.
As stated in my mock up, I wanted her to have a foreign appeal clearly stating she wasn't from
the UK.
I felt that adding many straplines would take away from the occupation in my magazine and
would be too much. Each topic on my cover covers each section in the audience that I wanted
to target.
The promotional offer on the bottom right corner is a discount from WHSmith. I have used
this store specifically because students tend to favour this store over others when it comes
to buying supplies and materials for school . Not only does it directly target my audience, it
also benefit s who ever that is reading it, thus appealing to a vast majority or students. This
appeals to my targeted social economic group, group E, those with the lowest level of income.
On the right hand side, ‘ The Greatest...,’ targets the Aspirers directly, using words like
‘Greatest,’ and ‘Rock’ , making sure they stood out and could be seen at first glance, taking
into factor that aspirers are driven by others perspectives of them rather than their own values
(stated in my consumer characterization) responding to what others perceive.
The colors I have chosen are different shades of yellow and orange, taking account that the
females in my survey favored vibrant and lively colors, this also responded to the season of a
new school year appealing to new sixth formers and the seasonal change.
Preliminary
Final product for my double page spread. Using indesign I
made this spread to contain the same qualities of my
cover page. The colors used on this page also respond
the survey in which I constructed asking people what they
prefer in a magazine. I wanted the colors to coordinate
with the main image of the spread to create and
atmosphere of warmth and prosperity. The majority of the
vote for lively colors were female so I added a vibrant
purple line behind the heading to attract more attention to
it but now looking at it would have looked better if it was
the other way around a use it looks the the Orange is
getting lost in the purple. The caption 'I'm connected to the
world' is sort of like a brief summary of the spread and is
set to persuade the readers to read on.
The Main image I used for the double page spread was
not used as a who. The reason being is because the body
language she uses is quite stiff and this article is
supposed to be a celebration of youths and exploration.
Her attire also prevents this from coming across because
she is wearing a blazer and looks quit uncomfortable. I
tried to to hide that fact by changing the colors of it but it
still prevailed so cut it off and showed her 'smize'(smiling
eyes)
Preliminary:
What I have learned from doing the preliminary?
From completing the audience research I've learned that people don't tend to really buy magazines anymore due to the
advances in technology of things like Twitter and other major social networks. Most magazines try to keep up with
these advances by providing a QR code so that readers could also access the articles on there phone and other devices,
but this can also back fire because some might scan the magazine with out even making the purchase . Another
solution is having their magazine as an app which would work the same way as subscribing because most of the apps
aren't free (add an example). Based on those facts I decided not to go in the direction of responding to worlds advances
and solely focus on targeting my audience.
By completing the production of my preliminary I've learned how to use many functions and techniques on photoshop that
would help improve the appearance and quality of my magazine, for example on for the image on my double page
spread I clicked on the hue/saturation function on the side then clicked colorise to change the Color and or bright of
the selected area. This means that when I take my official photos for my magazine I can change any part of the images
Color to suite my magazine.
By making a mock up for both the double page spread and magazine cover, I've learned how important a draft can be for
the composition and placement for my magazine. My reason for saying that is, if I had not have a solid image of what I
wanted and where to position everything the flow of my work would have been stunted and I'd have had to spend time
in between positioning to think bout it instead of looking back at my mock up and getting a solid idea.

In this issue of billboard a female audience
aged, 15-18, is targeted through Mise en
scene. This is shown through the
connotations of vibrant colors like pink,
blue, white,& yellow on the lay out of the
cover .Katy Perry’s costume is a bold black
,contrasting the pink background, grabbing
the reader’s attention. The props and print
on the costume are flowers ,stereotypically
feminine symbols, shown to appeal to the
interests of young female in there teens.

Both Vibe and Q magazine have gone for a subtle color
scheme using two colors ,often common in a male
oriented magazine. The mode of address is direct and
represents power and dominance from both cover stars.
They both target the audience of an aspirer through mise
en scene.
However though they aim for the same type of people
they do not aim for the same gender.
VIBE cover star Drake is dressed in all black with the bold
word “Unstoppable” labelled on his shirt in white capital
letters using anchorage to intensify his position. HIs body
composition and facial expression also plays part in his
aura for this magazine cover.
Q magazine cover star Madonna is placed over the
headline “Women in Music” representing her dominance
and status in the industry.

The column on the left is main purpose of the
contents page. It is here audiences look for
further info with the magazine. It tells you
what's inside and when it can be found.
The lay out of this column particularly stand
out to my because of the way it is coloured and
compositional on the page, because it is far
left, it makes it clear to audience what the
main story of the magazine is and singles out
the main image making it stand out.
The heading of the contents page
contains the issue date, number of
pages in the magazine, and the
magazine logo,
This magazine page will be the main
inspiration for the production of my
music magazine contents page.
Its typical for most magazines to have a
main image on their contents page.
Who they use as the main image is
based on the features of the magazine,
the cover, and the audience approach
they take. For example in this issue of Q
magazine the cover stare is aimed at a
male audience aged 18+ , based on the
facial expression and body language he
exhibits.his face expresses eps strength
and authority. To highlight those
features, the house scheme of this
page uses red black and white with also
expresses the meaning of the logo.
I used this magazine contents page from Q and
picked out features that I liked for my music
magazine contents page to make sure that I had
the conventions of a no ale magazine . By doing
this it gave my magazine a more authentic feel
and my page had a solid presentation.

This magazine contents page targets British audiences through iconic
symbol, like the England flag to the right of the page, and the mise en
scène. The gentleman on the main image of the page is wearing a
tailored suit holding a microphone this seems to be a Britten singer
given the subtitle saying 50 Ultimate British songs. The house scheme
targets male succeeders through the bold colors of red and the classic
colors of black and white. The contents are names of well established
artist down the side of the page. Supporting my pervious statement,
succeeders tend to support the status quo and success of others.
The genre of this magazine is rock 'n' roll because of the props and
supporting images of them hold or being near an instrument. Where it
says 50, the body language, of the man,is quite firm seems to be
holding drumsticks and had a very rebellious look on his face
expressing the confidence in his skill.
The fonts used on this page and very classy reason I say that is
because of the way its presented on the page.

dThe color scheme on this double

stereotypically represent a
rebellious girl image due to
contrast between the colors. The
Quote used in the heading also
directly tells you that . The
expression of the main image
Cher Lloyd is directly addressing
the audience making playful,
bubbly making the audience feel
as if theyre involve and can
relate to her. This spread was
intended for young girls ,aged
12-14, going through the same
phase as Cher. The house
scheme and placement of the
page is quiet simplistic and
doesn’t seem to be too wordy.

Rapper and producer Jay-Z. The
mise en scene aims at male
audiences aged 25-35. The cigar in
his hand give off an aura of a man
who is in charge. Cigars usually
symbolizes status and dominance.
His posture also is also that of a
man who carries himself with pride
and influence.
The quote “ He’s the Poet laureate
of rap capitalism” backs up my
statement that he is a man of great
influence. The supporting image of
his single and the four star review
serve two purposes the first is to
reinstate his image and the second
is for promotional value.

The dominating gender in vibe's magazine is
male. This suggests that vibe magazine has
more of an appeal to a male audience , but has
a lonely falls behind in female audience by a
small margin. The reason being, VIBE is a
music magazine that can target any audience
by simply changing the color scheme and cover
star representation
The logo for the magazine can correspond with
the target audience as well as compliment the
cover start and make them stand out . They
reach a variety of ages but there strongest
market are adults aged 21+. They mainly reach
african Americans over other ethnicities .

strength, power, and dominance.
Q reader usually has well established or we'll
know cover stars on the cover of their magazine
because that is the brand they established for
them self it's fair to say that they target
succeeders in the majority of their magazines.
The ABC1 profile for socio-economic groups says
that 7/10 of their audience is the wealthy working
class or the comfortable living.
Inspiration: XXL Mag.

XXL is a male oriented magazine as shown in the stats it's
magazine is meant for african American men aged 21+.
The Logo for this magazine symbolises these attributes in
the demographic. The letters are litters all acronym for
Extra extra Large meaning but in the sense of this
magazine it means glorious or infamous. The color used
behind the letters emphasise the meaning because of
what the color is know for and how it contrasts the letters
on the logo. The typography used for the logo it bold and
blocky witch is common in most hip hop magazines.

Audience Profile : Sixth-Form
Magazine
Who is your target audience? My music magazine will be aimed the mainstream.
Specifically male audiences aged 16-20 but it will have small feminine appeal projected
through the cover star be cause my main image will have a sincere and honest appeal to the
audience attracting both genders. The socio economic group I aim at is group E those with the
lowest level of income on the socio-econ scale ideally collage/university students. It will consist
of the latest artist and what popular in hip-hop music today.
How will you find out this information? I will conduct a second survey specifically on
music genres and ask people what they like to see in the there favourite genre of music. I will
also research the genre of magazine I'm doing. Looking at the billboard charts other recent hip
hop magazines along with the greatest of hip hop music.
How will it effect my magazine? By doing this I will have a deep understanding of my
audience and will then have a more accurate target for my audience making my magazine more
proficient and professional where to if I didn’t do the research for my magazine I wouldn’t
produce a relevant media product and my audience.
Production:
The name of my magazine will be fleek. Fleek is an urban term to used to
mean perfect flawless, or correct.
The masthead design on the right I designed it to portray the meaning of the
name and embody the demographics of XXL magazine . Its strong bulky
structure would appeal to mostly men audiences because of its presence.
The color wouldn't change, black would be the only color it can contain
because if the color changed the composition would be thrown.
The masthead on the bottom left was my second development for my
masthead. In this development I tried to create a co- gender appeal but it
failed because this mast head generally appealed to females which is
missing the majority of my target. The font used also misses my consumer
target. When I look at this masthead it seem to attract the audience of
reformers and succeeders because of its classy and elegant appeal.
The top left , my final out come, contains all the characteristics in which I
want for the masthead for my magazine. The ordinary look of the text
doesn't focus to a specific group which means I can diversify my target
audience in if I want to expand on certain areas and the masthead wouldn't
affect, like VIBE magazine's logo, if it does effect it I could just change the
color of the masthead so that it doesn't .
Magazine

Intentions: Magazine
Cove
rFrom a magazine mark up are you existing cover page VIBE magazine
To the left to determine the layout of my cover page. The mock up that
I've done on the right are my own straplines, splashes and kickers that
I've generated to target my audience. I incorporated "the 51 best…"
Strapline into my magnet magazine and converted it into "the 10
best…"
I use the artist Chris Brown for my cover because of the mass appeal
he has to both genders, but looking at it now he does not fit the criteria
or representation that I want for my magazine. On my magazine cover
his in mise en scène only correspond with the fonts and which I've
used on the page. His basal expression more seductive then I intend
to have my Coverstar look. The suit that he is wearing also did not
relate to my magazine genre, which is hip-hop. Though the look on his
face may seem seductive, he still has the aura of someone with
confidence and power due to his body language but The way it's
presented seems to be targeting the audience of male and female
reformers or successors.
Because I wanted a small appeal to females, I used a female artist on
one of my strap lines to bring in that market, I also created a puff that
would pose the same purpose as that. My whole audience
demographics in that show on this Mock up It targeted a mixture of
consumers which is not my intentions. The only thing that worked in
my favor was the layout and color scheme of the cover. That was the
only thing that I used in the production of my front cover.
Mock up:
For my double page spread I did not create a mock up
because I found using an existing one was more convenient.
Just like in my previous slide, I incorporated the layout and
design into the making double page spread. The reason I
chose this double-page spread is because the article that I will
be typing will have a personal link and in this spread rapper
Jay-Z is pulling in the audience through direct mode of
address making the reader feel as if he is directly involved with
them. His gaze is strong and represents the power that he has
in the industry. Anchorage is used with the "Game Hova" a use
of Play on words stating that he dominate. The colors used
here are strictly black-and-white ,targeting male succeeders of
the ages 20 and above.
For my contents page I also did not create a mock up due to
the fact that I felt that would have to stick to it I found it more
helpful using this contents page because it forced me to create
my own Topics in a way that would connect everything together.
The layout is the only thing I incorporated into my contents
page. For the contents I went on to Google and search the
genre of hip-hop and click on the news section. It was there I
found contents for the contents page of my magazine. I
incorporated the strap lines and main story from my front Front
cover to make the pages correspond with each other. I also use
the colors And fonts from my front cover on my contents page.
For the image of my contents page I want a picture that would
fit the page the same exact way as the image does in this
picture, because anything bigger or smaller what upset the
balance of my contents page.
Assessment of language
The language I chose to use in the article for my double page spread was informal with a slight usage of slang. This is because using formal language
wouldn't have fit the target for my audience and would have ruined the flow for my magazine . Using informal address allows me to connect to my
audience on an understanding level because it makes you feel more relaxed and familiar depending on the words used and the degree of tone .
I chose to do my interview in the style of a biography because that allowed me to create the persona of my cover star through the eyes of my
interviewer. Though my main objective of this spread was to make it personal, the story of Xing is told through the interviewer and ends in a quote that
defines his true nature.
In my article I use the word 'shorty' and the term 'creeping' to directly target the urban demographic of my magazine, my main target. I also used high
level of vocabulary to target the age range of my audience demographic. Conducting Xing's story from the interviewers interpretation aloud me to get
both aspects of my audience compelling onto this spread if I had not wrote it this way then it would have been difficult to do so.
Examples from Article: The rectangles with this color are ways I used
informal/slang to target the urban demographics of
my audience target. These terms can be understood
by the majority of the age group I target for my
magazine.
These rectangles represent how I targeted the age
range of my audience . Using words with high
pronunciation and standard throws readers who
aren't at a certain level of education off.
This quotes was not only used to serve as a
personal aspect but also as a sign off like
authentication that the information in the article
isn't falsified.
Cover star
The cover stars on these magazines
generate the aura of someone with high
standing but still has been through a lot.
There facial expressions are serious and
a bit understanding. The reason why I
say that is because the mode of address
in all of these magazine cover are direct
and they don't give off a sense of
intimidation just ambition.
The representation of my cover star for
my magazine will have a similar aspect
but different approach.he will be made to
look confident and humble but with and
edge of seriousness.
Images of Potential Use:After analyzing different magazine cover stars that would Inspire the image of my
own cover star I decided to go with with these images to use in the finale product for
my magazine. The image furthest left with the blue background was a test image to
see if he would be the right person my magazine, and with this shot I felt he really
grasp concept of my magazine and with his expression the conventions and mass
appeal towards my target audience fit perfectly. Since he was using a direct mode
of address I could also grab the personal aspect from the image thus appealing to
spires my main audience target.
The image directly beside it is of the same person but a different set up. For this
photo shoot I wanted him to have a more mature look but at the same time not
enough to look professional. I wanted to create the image of an urban cinderella"
basing his story around Iconic rapper, Joey BadA$$. the buttoned down shirt is set
for juxtaposition, by it self, symbolizes his growth and maturity through life but the
unbuttoned buttons on the shirt is a statement that he still acknowledges what he
comes from and fame won't change that. I plan on using this image for the contents
page to make him seem like and enigma as apposed to the front cover where he
uses direct mode of address. Him looking to the side isn't him really dismissing the
audience but him being self conscious of him and aware of the fact that they're
there. As you know may know, the contents is not only there to to provide the reader
with information and direction but there to convince the ready to keep reading on
using creative headlines and enticing images along with the set up.
The image at the bottom right corner is what I plan on using for my double page
spread. His composition, him looking up ,projects his high ambitions and
confidence.
The last image, directly above my potential double page spread, will likely be my
supporting image. currently I do not know where this image will be put in my
magazine but To make it more relevant I will be making an album cover for my
cover star using this image. Its potential position is the double page spread.
Process of images:
For the cover of my magazine I used this photo
of Jason to represent the fleek and its meaning.
I like the original picture but I had to manipulate
his picture in Photoshop in a way that would fit
the criteria for my magazine and my audience.
First I eliminated the excess background with
the magic wand tool then I selected the
background and colorised using hue/saturation
making the background grey. Sine the
background looked unnatural because of the
light of the picture and the flat back ground I
started to use different sizes of the paint brush
and changed the opacity to create a naturally lit
picture instead of using a gradient back ground.
Process of images:
Taking inspiration from the XXL double page spread,
with rapper Jay-Z as the main image, I zoomed in on
this picture of his facial expression because it created a
sense of prosperity and ambition. I brightened up his
background by using the colour either on Hugh and
saturation on photo shop. I darkened the filter for this
photo because I felt it was too bright for the audience
that I was aiming for. The original picture also did not
go with my magazine color scheme due to the yellow
background. I also cut into the picture because the way
Jay-Z is positioned initial his picture really inspired me
to do something with it and it would have failed if I left it
in a Mid Shot
Final production
For the finale production of my music magazine
cover, I used the house scheme of blue black white
and grey, to target a male oriented magazine. I
changed the majority of content on my magazine
cover because I felt that my strap line weren’t
organized and it didn’t target the audience in which
I intended my magazine for. The cover star of my
magazine represents the audience I target through
his attire and facial expression. His tucked in collar
represents a boy aiming to be a gentlemen in his
own manor which is what most sixth form males
aim to do. I changed the strap line on the left from
the Nicki Minaj quote to the latest hits because the
aim for my audience are males aged 16-20 and I
felt that the quote had a stronger appeal to women
then men for my magazine so I changed it. it also
responds to my consumer market, mainstreamers,
because its based on a whole crowds perception
instead of an individual’s.

Assessment of time management
After completing my coursework and looking back on my production schedule, it
seems that I have kept to my schedule as much as possible.
During the first weeks of my production I managed to complete the tasks that I set
for myself and take the pictures for the final production of my music magazine.
That aside I also managed to complete all my do mock ups and audience research
on time enough to start the production of my final pieces early as I want on I
progressed I added work to my PowerPoint to show proof of my work ethic. After I
gave myself 5 weeks to complete the practical work(final cover, contents, and
double page) I managed to do this with time to spare. This gave me two weeks to
complete my evaluation work and edit the presentation of my power point.

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products?
On my magazine cover, I placed the mast head in the conventional place that you would usually see the mast head, at the
top above the cover star. Its place in the center, following the thirds criteria for a magazine. I chose the this place on my
cover for my magazine because the research I carried out on vibe magazine placed its masthead in the center of every
magazine and so I placed mine there, not only cause I analysed the placement of vibe mastheads, but the composition of
my magazine it self would have been thrown off it had been place else where. Ariel black , colored in was the font of my
mast head, a bold and simple font that could be manipulated so could correlate with the target of my magazine which are
mainstreamers . The colors that I change my logo to will respond to the main stream consumer, a target audience that
changes more frequently than the other consumers. The text is not formal nor gender specific which means I can target
either gender . My main objective is to target the male ratio so I changed the corlor of the header to a royal blue tone that
would stereotypically be classified as a “ boy color,’’ to connote a male oriented magazine. The color is contrasts the
background enough to stand out in plain sight so they’d see it on display on a self .
My magazine layout is built around my cover star. The cover star in a magazine is very significant because when deciding the
representation of your magazine and the target audience, it the cover star that compliments all those attributes and makes your
magazine what it is . That is why most articles tend to have imagery with the text, to project the representation and impression of the
magazine onto the reader.
The position that my cover star, Xing, is placed in it to the left hand side of my cover. My reason for this is because in my pervious
mock up I placed my cover star in the same position. Another reason for this is because if he was placed center page it would have
messed up the flow and conventions of the page. If he was flipped and placed on the right hand side then he would have had his back
facing the opening of the page that might’ve came across as rebellious or dysfunctional because to me its like his back is turned to his
audience . He uses direct mode of address creating a personal appeal which is what I aim for with my audience.
I did no use a puff for my magazine despite the survey saying that was what they looked forward to most in a magazine. I
chose not to add a puff onto the cover of my magazine because I wanted my magazines main focus and curiosity to be
placed on Xing because he is the main story in my magazine and he is what he mainstreamers should look forward to
reading about. If I had the choice to add on a puff now I still probably wouldn’t have because my cover would’ve jam
packed my cover and ruin the presentation and aura that I am trying to create.
The splash containing the main story gives you insight on what you will see if you continue further
on into the magazine. As most magazines do, I placed this convention near the cover star so that
even if they cannot tell what the main story it would link back the cover star.
The straplines on my cover are not balanced physically because of the position of my cover star and
my barcode being placed on the bottom corner of my magazine. Though this is the case, my straplines
don’t over load the page with irrelevant topics it all links back to my target consumers male main
streamers aged 16-20.
Continued…
My contents page follows the conventions of an existing magazine but there are some
differences. the main title used for this page is contents referencing what this page is
and making it hard to miss. The magazine logo is placed in the corner above the date . I
chose to lay it that way because though the logo was not completely shown that is
something that doesn’t change as apposed to the date which changes with every issue.
The fonts used on the contents page consisted of the same fonts on my magazine cover
having it correspond and look like its all form the same magazine. The colors also
served he same purpose. The way I used the colors on this is what made this page’s
presentation good. I used the royal blues the high light stories within the contents people
might find worth in looking into. . Resprise stamp was used in the latest hits on the cover
page, it is also being used for the contents title and the numbers 50 and 63 in black
pulling the readers attention.
The captions and descriptions used through out my contents page were pulled from my
cove page an external sources to support my target audience and encourage further
read.
All the contents for the page is placed on the left, giving space for the main image of the
page to be seen. I did not want any words or shapes blocking hi body language to the
point where you wouldn’t tell what he was doing. I
I did not choose to add any advertisements on to he contents page because I want my
whole magazine to have a personal appeal and I felt that having ads took away from
that because it brought in a materialistic characteristic into the magazine which would
appeal more to aspirers .
Continued…
The main image of my double page spread in placed directly. I placed it there because the spread that I looked at had a similar
attribute and I was fond of it so I converted it into my own style that would look good on my spread with out imbalance the harmony I
worked to create through out my work.
The double page spreads article reads from right to left, a drop cap was used to direct the reader. I did it that way because the
composition of the columns fit the page the opposite way and I didn’t mind the change in direction and thought it complimented the
spread really well. The title ‘crown me, on the page uses anchorage toward the main image giving the meaning that he is some one of
great capability and deserves his acknowledgment or praise. The contents of the spread , was an interview between Xing and an editor
so that is why it is written in the style of a biography containing his greatest and darkest moments. It also contains a direct quote form
Xing him self voicing his thoughts and purpose. The sub title ‘Xing,’ is placed over the main image leaving his face only vulnerable
which has the effect of high lighting the expression on Xing’s face that shows the look of someone prosperous.
The numbering for each page would be set on the top left and right of each page and would use the same font through this is a strategy
that would encourage audiences further read.
I placed the supporting image for my magazine on the double page spread because the image had a strong correlation to the article.
2. How does your media product represent particular
social groups?
My media product represents young black males ,aged 17-18 belonging to group E on
the socio economic scale, those with the lowest level of income. My ideal target
consumers are mainstreamers but my magazine contains hints of other consumer
appeals too. The contents used in through out the production of my music magazine we
up to date and modern which responds to the majority of youth today.
To represent my audience I started by changing the color of my original title to the color
of royal blue with is has the generalization of symbolizing the male gender. Though the
font of my logo isn’t formal it isn’t immature neither’. You can use the metaphor ‘it is a
teen.
I chose a young black male that could be both serious but subtle and at the same time
represent young ambitious black males that try to make some thing out of there l life
through talents people would pay no mind unless someone of higher power were to
recognize it. what he is wearing also reflects the target audience for my magazine. I
wanted to create a figure for males trying to succeed in life and thought they were at
their worst. Xing represents males, aged 16-20, who have ambitious characteristic and
what they could achieve if they have the drive.
3. What kind of media institution might distribute your
media product and why?
 I conducted a research on media institutions to analyze
which media institution would fit to distribute my
magazine successfully to target audience. After doing so
I decided to choose ’IPC,’ to distribute my magazine. It Is
a well establish institution and is very popular.
 They produce and create the magazine so that its
possible to view them on your mobile devices and online.
This works for my magazine because my audience
wouldn’t be limited the to just physical copies.
 this is the link to the IPC website where I got the
information to present on this page
http://www.ipcmedia.com/about
4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
My magazine is aimed a t an urban male audience, aged 16- 20.The main consumer I target
are the main streamers, the largest consumer group of people across the world who reside in
the socio- economic group, E. those with the lowest level of income, because the majority of my
audience would be in some form of education and would not have time to work full time. My
magazine consists of things that are judged by the general public, like greatest hits and the
best artist to watch.
The language, in which I use to target my audience demographic, is informal. I chose to write in
this format because people the majority of people aged 16-20. It contains slang to directly
target the urban demographic of my magazine which is the main target of my whole magazine.
Though I used slang in my magazine article, I did avoid words that the general public wouldn’t
hear on a daily basis so that it wouldn’t bring confusion .This links to the reason why I chose to
do my interview in the form of a biography for my article. Doing an interview in the form of a
biography allows me to grab both the personal and the professional aspect of my magazine as
a whole and present it on the page that would attract the urban demographics, specifically
males aged 16-20. The article does still portray the in which Xing uses, proven the given quote
placed on the right side of the double page capturing the essence of his character. It
complimented Xing because he is a humble person who speaks to people witch respect but at
the same time in a friendly and close manner and it wouldn’t have made sense to change that
whole aspect by having the article written in a formal way. That also would have missed my
audience target.
I chose to carry out the house style colors of white, grey, black and blue through out my
magazine not only to have them correspond with each other but because it represents my
target audience . The colors were calm to eyes and responded to my survey of the male’s
perception of an ideal magazine.
5. How did you attract/address your audience?
I included this Itunes QR reader to promote the album of my main image to link the age
representation to my magazine. By this I mean that Technology is a common use of the
people in this day and age due to its convenience allowing people to access things with
out have to got to a store to physically buy it.
6. What have you learnt about technologies from the
process of constructing this product?
Through out the production of my magazine I developed my images on the
software photo shop in order to build the presentation for my magazine and its
image. This software was the main editing used for my magazine
I learned how to use several techniques and developed many skills during the
process that included resizing, cropping eliminating the excess with the magic
wand tool or air brush and color adjusting adding the layer of hue/saturation and
then click colorize to change the color of the selected area on your image. which
is what I used in both backgrounds for my cover and double page. The final
production of my images broadcasts the skills in which I harnessed on photo
shop.
I also improved my photography skills while producing the potential images. I
took several shots of my cover star doing different poses from different angles
and lighting in order to determine the images that will proceed on to the final
product of my magazine. This means I had to adjust the focus of the camera and
stand in different positions taking into the consideration of the background and
the poses of my cover star.
For the article of my magazine the texts and composition of the page was
constructed on the software InDesign. I learned how to column my text in way
that wouldn’t take away from the main image of the page, also the importance of
how many columns you use. Another tool I used was the change in character
style which allowed me to construct a drop cap to signify the beginning of my
article
7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in
the progression from it to the full product?
Comparing my preliminary task and my final product I can now see how much I've progressed in the production
through out my coursework. I feel I’ve captured the essence of a real magazine because it did follow the convention a
magazine enough to have a professional presentation.
The straplines on both my are placed on the unspoken
rule of third and all lined up vertically and wasn’t placed
place thoughtlessly onto the page. How ever the left
hand side of my music magazine was placed light more
to the right because when viewing the conventions of
an actual magazine the left side was always slightly
more to the left because they didn’t want the binding of
the magazine to interfere with the magazines
presentation.
After my research I learned more ways to construct the
conventions one of my magazine that would pull the
audiences attention. After, researching the bill board
charts of the latest hits I placed that on the cover of my
magazine so that my magazine contained real world
evidence of hip-hop music today in the modern world.
If I could change any aspect of my magazine cover it
would be the kicker under my splash, because if you
actually read my magazine article there not really a
reference to his album excluding the promotional tag on
the double page spread. I would have changed the
kicker to say ‘Behind the Music’ because the article
referrers to his background and events in his life
Through the technologies of photo shop and InDesign I produced the final products of my magazine that would both represents
and targets the audience through the use of conventions, mise en scene, house schemes, and the representation of cover stars. In
conclusion, from doing the preliminary task, I developed an understanding of what it takes to make a successful magazine.

  • 2. Magazine Course Work  For my media course work I will complete three sections.  Research, analyzing my target audience, gathering material from existing magazines and looking into the main productions of a music magazine in the genre that I would like my magazine to represent. I will be labelling the conventions of magazine covers, contents pages and double page spreads as well compare and contrast them, specifying the factors of logos and genres. After doing so, I will complete my preliminary task and broad cast my knowledge and understanding from my previous research.  Planning, reinstating the process and difficulties in completing the preliminary task, I will then start to develop my ideas based on my research of the magazine genres, logos and my target audience. I will create a magazine cover, contents page and double page that would appeal to my audience range and genre of my choice.  When I have thoroughly completed these section I would then complete an evaluation critiquing what I have done and what I could have done better

On the other hand, they also seek out caring and protective brands. Materialistic, acquisitive people, who are driven by others’ perceptions of them rather than by their own values. The quote will be relevant to the story and the cover star as a whole. All these ideas are lead by the that fact that I want this to be personal and have it capture the target audience of who I intend, female aspires , aged 16-18. Header Column Column Column Quote
  • 10. Preliminary I have manipulated to make it more appealing and coherent to my magazine. The image on the left is what I intend to use for the cover of my sixth-form magazine . Reason being ,the composition and costume of the cover star directly corresponds to my mock cover. For my double-page spread I chose this image about because of the mode of the address is direct and can make a personal connection to the audience this is also shown through the facial expression. Using Photoshop, I edited the image to create the sense of reminiscence and fulfilment by dulling the colors and brightening up her face to highlight her smile.
  • 11. Preliminary:  My initial masthead, I wanted a playful font that could attract a young mature audience but I when In the process of making my cover, I started to doubt it .The font, Tekton Pro Ext, was too childish for my magazine cover and the name was a bit to vague on targeting my audience. Masthead Idea s The 6th F6rm Recovering from my last masthead, I decided to keep the ‘6’ and used use a but a of word play adding the ‘form’ to it. By enlarging the ‘6’ I created an ‘o’ for the word ‘form’. The font I used to execute this masthead ‘Adobe Fangsong Std R’ was mature enough to pass for my audience but I felt as though it was still a but childish because of the lower case letters , so I altered it in my final out come.  This is the final masthead produced for my preliminary task. As stated in my previous explanation, I kept the font and capitalized all letters in my mast head. I tilted the ‘6’ to balance out the line between mature and child like and thus my masthead
  • 12. Preliminary This is the final product of my preliminary magazine cover. I stuck with the mock ups structure , using a strong cover star supporting the concept of the cover and the appeal to my audience. As stated in my mock up, I wanted her to have a foreign appeal clearly stating she wasn't from the UK. I felt that adding many straplines would take away from the occupation in my magazine and would be too much. Each topic on my cover covers each section in the audience that I wanted to target. The promotional offer on the bottom right corner is a discount from WHSmith. I have used this store specifically because students tend to favour this store over others when it comes to buying supplies and materials for school . Not only does it directly target my audience, it also benefit s who ever that is reading it, thus appealing to a vast majority or students. This appeals to my targeted social economic group, group E, those with the lowest level of income. On the right hand side, ‘ The Greatest...,’ targets the Aspirers directly, using words like ‘Greatest,’ and ‘Rock’ , making sure they stood out and could be seen at first glance, taking into factor that aspirers are driven by others perspectives of them rather than their own values (stated in my consumer characterization) responding to what others perceive. The colors I have chosen are different shades of yellow and orange, taking account that the females in my survey favored vibrant and lively colors, this also responded to the season of a new school year appealing to new sixth formers and the seasonal change.
  • 13. Preliminary Final product for my double page spread. Using indesign I made this spread to contain the same qualities of my cover page. The colors used on this page also respond the survey in which I constructed asking people what they prefer in a magazine. I wanted the colors to coordinate with the main image of the spread to create and atmosphere of warmth and prosperity. The majority of the vote for lively colors were female so I added a vibrant purple line behind the heading to attract more attention to it but now looking at it would have looked better if it was the other way around a use it looks the the Orange is getting lost in the purple. The caption 'I'm connected to the world' is sort of like a brief summary of the spread and is set to persuade the readers to read on. The Main image I used for the double page spread was not used as a who. The reason being is because the body language she uses is quite stiff and this article is supposed to be a celebration of youths and exploration. Her attire also prevents this from coming across because she is wearing a blazer and looks quit uncomfortable. I tried to to hide that fact by changing the colors of it but it still prevailed so cut it off and showed her 'smize'(smiling eyes)
  • 14. Preliminary: What I have learned from doing the preliminary? From completing the audience research I've learned that people don't tend to really buy magazines anymore due to the advances in technology of things like Twitter and other major social networks. Most magazines try to keep up with these advances by providing a QR code so that readers could also access the articles on there phone and other devices, but this can also back fire because some might scan the magazine with out even making the purchase . Another solution is having their magazine as an app which would work the same way as subscribing because most of the apps aren't free (add an example). Based on those facts I decided not to go in the direction of responding to worlds advances and solely focus on targeting my audience. By completing the production of my preliminary I've learned how to use many functions and techniques on photoshop that would help improve the appearance and quality of my magazine, for example on for the image on my double page spread I clicked on the hue/saturation function on the side then clicked colorise to change the Color and or bright of the selected area. This means that when I take my official photos for my magazine I can change any part of the images Color to suite my magazine. By making a mock up for both the double page spread and magazine cover, I've learned how important a draft can be for the composition and placement for my magazine. My reason for saying that is, if I had not have a solid image of what I wanted and where to position everything the flow of my work would have been stunted and I'd have had to spend time in between positioning to think bout it instead of looking back at my mock up and getting a solid idea. • 16. Analysis: Magazine Cove r In this issue of billboard a female audience aged, 15-18, is targeted through Mise en scene. This is shown through the connotations of vibrant colors like pink, blue, white,& yellow on the lay out of the cover .Katy Perry’s costume is a bold black ,contrasting the pink background, grabbing the reader’s attention. The props and print on the costume are flowers ,stereotypically feminine symbols, shown to appeal to the interests of young female in there teens.
  • 17. Comparison: Magazine Cove r Both Vibe and Q magazine have gone for a subtle color scheme using two colors ,often common in a male oriented magazine. The mode of address is direct and represents power and dominance from both cover stars. They both target the audience of an aspirer through mise en scene. However though they aim for the same type of people they do not aim for the same gender. VIBE cover star Drake is dressed in all black with the bold word “Unstoppable” labelled on his shirt in white capital letters using anchorage to intensify his position. HIs body composition and facial expression also plays part in his aura for this magazine cover. Q magazine cover star Madonna is placed over the headline “Women in Music” representing her dominance and status in the industry.
  • 18. Analyses: Contents Pag e The column on the left is main purpose of the contents page. It is here audiences look for further info with the magazine. It tells you what's inside and when it can be found. The lay out of this column particularly stand out to my because of the way it is coloured and compositional on the page, because it is far left, it makes it clear to audience what the main story of the magazine is and singles out the main image making it stand out. The heading of the contents page contains the issue date, number of pages in the magazine, and the magazine logo, This magazine page will be the main inspiration for the production of my music magazine contents page. Its typical for most magazines to have a main image on their contents page. Who they use as the main image is based on the features of the magazine, the cover, and the audience approach they take. For example in this issue of Q magazine the cover stare is aimed at a male audience aged 18+ , based on the facial expression and body language he exhibits.his face expresses eps strength and authority. To highlight those features, the house scheme of this page uses red black and white with also expresses the meaning of the logo. I used this magazine contents page from Q and picked out features that I liked for my music magazine contents page to make sure that I had the conventions of a no ale magazine . By doing this it gave my magazine a more authentic feel and my page had a solid presentation.
  • 19. Analyses: Contents Pag e This magazine contents page targets British audiences through iconic symbol, like the England flag to the right of the page, and the mise en scène. The gentleman on the main image of the page is wearing a tailored suit holding a microphone this seems to be a Britten singer given the subtitle saying 50 Ultimate British songs. The house scheme targets male succeeders through the bold colors of red and the classic colors of black and white. The contents are names of well established artist down the side of the page. Supporting my pervious statement, succeeders tend to support the status quo and success of others. The genre of this magazine is rock 'n' roll because of the props and supporting images of them hold or being near an instrument. Where it says 50, the body language, of the man,is quite firm seems to be holding drumsticks and had a very rebellious look on his face expressing the confidence in his skill. The fonts used on this page and very classy reason I say that is because of the way its presented on the page.
  • 20. Analysis: Double- PageSprea dThe color scheme on this double page spread is pink and black stereotypically represent a rebellious girl image due to contrast between the colors. The Quote used in the heading also directly tells you that . The expression of the main image Cher Lloyd is directly addressing the audience making playful, bubbly making the audience feel as if theyre involve and can relate to her. This spread was intended for young girls ,aged 12-14, going through the same phase as Cher. The house scheme and placement of the page is quiet simplistic and doesn’t seem to be too wordy.
  • 21. Analysis: Double- PageSprea dThe main image in this spread is Rapper and producer Jay-Z. The mise en scene aims at male audiences aged 25-35. The cigar in his hand give off an aura of a man who is in charge. Cigars usually symbolizes status and dominance. His posture also is also that of a man who carries himself with pride and influence. The quote “ He’s the Poet laureate of rap capitalism” backs up my statement that he is a man of great influence. The supporting image of his single and the four star review serve two purposes the first is to reinstate his image and the second is for promotional value. s dedddfdffffffrfdjhdgfsgtswhdeueyw3y63wuy e3ujejdrghsnhdjmfjfdfvfayfyuagdyuwegugy e7qdbiurfuiyusyshjasnmhjznmhjzxnmhzxn mhzxnmhbseydguqwgdey6tr76werfgu7ey6 gt8o2347gtfr487t436gtfbgfujebfgu7rg3bqbfd qiohdrqigfrbiwjkbfweofbgvewnhfwefho3y97 89r34tg4rfyhuughdrv nhjdfghsdgfaaqerawtrwtyehyde wwerde deeeweweeedeweed eeeeeeddedeede dedee eeeyueyudegtudeueuteteteuje eseueftuyefvyuefvyugfuy7geie ewqyutefw6yuegfe87 tweuf6tyu6f aqweycv wd qawd few we d w ed d dea a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I ii ii I I I I I I I I I I I I ii I ii I I I I I I I I I I I i

This suggests that vibe magazine has more of an appeal to a male audience , but has a lonely falls behind in female audience by a small margin. The reason being, VIBE is a music magazine that can target any audience by simply changing the color scheme and cover star representation The logo for the magazine can correspond with the target audience as well as compliment the cover start and make them stand out . They reach a variety of ages but there strongest market are adults aged 21+. They mainly reach african Americans over other ethnicities .
  • 26. Inspiration: Q Mag. Content s Male audiences dominate Q readers male to female ratio in audience demographics having the majority of the audience 15-24. Which would correlate to the magazine logo of Q reader. Th color is a bright red which is know to symbolize strength, power, and dominance. Q reader usually has well established or we'll know cover stars on the cover of their magazine because that is the brand they established for them self it's fair to say that they target succeeders in the majority of their magazines. The ABC1 profile for socio-economic groups says that 7/10 of their audience is the wealthy working class or the comfortable living.
  • 27. Inspiration: XXL Mag. Double- page XXL is a male oriented magazine as shown in the stats it's magazine is meant for african American men aged 21+. The Logo for this magazine symbolises these attributes in the demographic. The letters are litters all acronym for Extra extra Large meaning but in the sense of this magazine it means glorious or infamous. The color used behind the letters emphasise the meaning because of what the color is know for and how it contrasts the letters on the logo. The typography used for the logo it bold and blocky witch is common in most hip hop magazines.

  • 29. Audience Profile : Sixth-Form Magazine Who is your target audience? My music magazine will be aimed the mainstream. Specifically male audiences aged 16-20 but it will have small feminine appeal projected through the cover star be cause my main image will have a sincere and honest appeal to the audience attracting both genders. The socio economic group I aim at is group E those with the lowest level of income on the socio-econ scale ideally collage/university students. It will consist of the latest artist and what popular in hip-hop music today. How will you find out this information? I will conduct a second survey specifically on music genres and ask people what they like to see in the there favourite genre of music. I will also research the genre of magazine I'm doing. Looking at the billboard charts other recent hip hop magazines along with the greatest of hip hop music. How will it effect my magazine? By doing this I will have a deep understanding of my audience and will then have a more accurate target for my audience making my magazine more proficient and professional where to if I didn’t do the research for my magazine I wouldn’t produce a relevant media product and my audience.
  • 30. Production: The name of my magazine will be fleek. Fleek is an urban term to used to mean perfect flawless, or correct. The masthead design on the right I designed it to portray the meaning of the name and embody the demographics of XXL magazine . Its strong bulky structure would appeal to mostly men audiences because of its presence. The color wouldn't change, black would be the only color it can contain because if the color changed the composition would be thrown. The masthead on the bottom left was my second development for my masthead. In this development I tried to create a co- gender appeal but it failed because this mast head generally appealed to females which is missing the majority of my target. The font used also misses my consumer target. When I look at this masthead it seem to attract the audience of reformers and succeeders because of its classy and elegant appeal. The top left , my final out come, contains all the characteristics in which I want for the masthead for my magazine. The ordinary look of the text doesn't focus to a specific group which means I can diversify my target audience in if I want to expand on certain areas and the masthead wouldn't affect, like VIBE magazine's logo, if it does effect it I could just change the color of the masthead so that it doesn't . Magazine Logo
  • 31. Intentions: Magazine Cove rFrom a magazine mark up are you existing cover page VIBE magazine To the left to determine the layout of my cover page. The mock up that I've done on the right are my own straplines, splashes and kickers that I've generated to target my audience. I incorporated "the 51 best…" Strapline into my magnet magazine and converted it into "the 10 best…" I use the artist Chris Brown for my cover because of the mass appeal he has to both genders, but looking at it now he does not fit the criteria or representation that I want for my magazine. On my magazine cover his in mise en scène only correspond with the fonts and which I've used on the page. His basal expression more seductive then I intend to have my Coverstar look. The suit that he is wearing also did not relate to my magazine genre, which is hip-hop. Though the look on his face may seem seductive, he still has the aura of someone with confidence and power due to his body language but The way it's presented seems to be targeting the audience of male and female reformers or successors. Because I wanted a small appeal to females, I used a female artist on one of my strap lines to bring in that market, I also created a puff that would pose the same purpose as that. My whole audience demographics in that show on this Mock up It targeted a mixture of consumers which is not my intentions. The only thing that worked in my favor was the layout and color scheme of the cover. That was the only thing that I used in the production of my front cover.
  • 32. Mock up: For my double page spread I did not create a mock up because I found using an existing one was more convenient. Just like in my previous slide, I incorporated the layout and design into the making double page spread. The reason I chose this double-page spread is because the article that I will be typing will have a personal link and in this spread rapper Jay-Z is pulling in the audience through direct mode of address making the reader feel as if he is directly involved with them. His gaze is strong and represents the power that he has in the industry. Anchorage is used with the "Game Hova" a use of Play on words stating that he dominate. The colors used here are strictly black-and-white ,targeting male succeeders of the ages 20 and above.
  • 33. For my contents page I also did not create a mock up due to the fact that I felt that would have to stick to it I found it more helpful using this contents page because it forced me to create my own Topics in a way that would connect everything together. The layout is the only thing I incorporated into my contents page. For the contents I went on to Google and search the genre of hip-hop and click on the news section. It was there I found contents for the contents page of my magazine. I incorporated the strap lines and main story from my front Front cover to make the pages correspond with each other. I also use the colors And fonts from my front cover on my contents page. For the image of my contents page I want a picture that would fit the page the same exact way as the image does in this picture, because anything bigger or smaller what upset the balance of my contents page.
  • 34. Assessment of language The language I chose to use in the article for my double page spread was informal with a slight usage of slang. This is because using formal language wouldn't have fit the target for my audience and would have ruined the flow for my magazine . Using informal address allows me to connect to my audience on an understanding level because it makes you feel more relaxed and familiar depending on the words used and the degree of tone . I chose to do my interview in the style of a biography because that allowed me to create the persona of my cover star through the eyes of my interviewer. Though my main objective of this spread was to make it personal, the story of Xing is told through the interviewer and ends in a quote that defines his true nature. In my article I use the word 'shorty' and the term 'creeping' to directly target the urban demographic of my magazine, my main target. I also used high level of vocabulary to target the age range of my audience demographic. Conducting Xing's story from the interviewers interpretation aloud me to get both aspects of my audience compelling onto this spread if I had not wrote it this way then it would have been difficult to do so. Examples from Article: The rectangles with this color are ways I used informal/slang to target the urban demographics of my audience target. These terms can be understood by the majority of the age group I target for my magazine. These rectangles represent how I targeted the age range of my audience . Using words with high pronunciation and standard throws readers who aren't at a certain level of education off. This quotes was not only used to serve as a personal aspect but also as a sign off like authentication that the information in the article isn't falsified.
  • 35. Cover star The cover stars on these magazines generate the aura of someone with high standing but still has been through a lot. There facial expressions are serious and a bit understanding. The reason why I say that is because the mode of address in all of these magazine cover are direct and they don't give off a sense of intimidation just ambition. The representation of my cover star for my magazine will have a similar aspect but different approach.he will be made to look confident and humble but with and edge of seriousness.
  • 36. Images of Potential Use:After analyzing different magazine cover stars that would Inspire the image of my own cover star I decided to go with with these images to use in the finale product for my magazine. The image furthest left with the blue background was a test image to see if he would be the right person my magazine, and with this shot I felt he really grasp concept of my magazine and with his expression the conventions and mass appeal towards my target audience fit perfectly. Since he was using a direct mode of address I could also grab the personal aspect from the image thus appealing to spires my main audience target. The image directly beside it is of the same person but a different set up. For this photo shoot I wanted him to have a more mature look but at the same time not enough to look professional. I wanted to create the image of an urban cinderella" basing his story around Iconic rapper, Joey BadA$$. the buttoned down shirt is set for juxtaposition, by it self, symbolizes his growth and maturity through life but the unbuttoned buttons on the shirt is a statement that he still acknowledges what he comes from and fame won't change that. I plan on using this image for the contents page to make him seem like and enigma as apposed to the front cover where he uses direct mode of address. Him looking to the side isn't him really dismissing the audience but him being self conscious of him and aware of the fact that they're there. As you know may know, the contents is not only there to to provide the reader with information and direction but there to convince the ready to keep reading on using creative headlines and enticing images along with the set up. The image at the bottom right corner is what I plan on using for my double page spread. His composition, him looking up ,projects his high ambitions and confidence. The last image, directly above my potential double page spread, will likely be my supporting image. currently I do not know where this image will be put in my magazine but To make it more relevant I will be making an album cover for my cover star using this image. Its potential position is the double page spread.
  • 37. Process of images: For the cover of my magazine I used this photo of Jason to represent the fleek and its meaning. I like the original picture but I had to manipulate his picture in Photoshop in a way that would fit the criteria for my magazine and my audience. First I eliminated the excess background with the magic wand tool then I selected the background and colorised using hue/saturation making the background grey. Sine the background looked unnatural because of the light of the picture and the flat back ground I started to use different sizes of the paint brush and changed the opacity to create a naturally lit picture instead of using a gradient back ground.
  • 38. Process of images: Taking inspiration from the XXL double page spread, with rapper Jay-Z as the main image, I zoomed in on this picture of his facial expression because it created a sense of prosperity and ambition. I brightened up his background by using the colour either on Hugh and saturation on photo shop. I darkened the filter for this photo because I felt it was too bright for the audience that I was aiming for. The original picture also did not go with my magazine color scheme due to the yellow background. I also cut into the picture because the way Jay-Z is positioned initial his picture really inspired me to do something with it and it would have failed if I left it in a Mid Shot
  • 39. Final production For the finale production of my music magazine cover, I used the house scheme of blue black white and grey, to target a male oriented magazine. I changed the majority of content on my magazine cover because I felt that my strap line weren’t organized and it didn’t target the audience in which I intended my magazine for. The cover star of my magazine represents the audience I target through his attire and facial expression. His tucked in collar represents a boy aiming to be a gentlemen in his own manor which is what most sixth form males aim to do. I changed the strap line on the left from the Nicki Minaj quote to the latest hits because the aim for my audience are males aged 16-20 and I felt that the quote had a stronger appeal to women then men for my magazine so I changed it. it also responds to my consumer market, mainstreamers, because its based on a whole crowds perception instead of an individual’s.
  • 42. Assessment of time management After completing my coursework and looking back on my production schedule, it seems that I have kept to my schedule as much as possible. During the first weeks of my production I managed to complete the tasks that I set for myself and take the pictures for the final production of my music magazine. That aside I also managed to complete all my do mock ups and audience research on time enough to start the production of my final pieces early as I want on I progressed I added work to my PowerPoint to show proof of my work ethic. After I gave myself 5 weeks to complete the practical work(final cover, contents, and double page) I managed to do this with time to spare. • 44. 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? On my magazine cover, I placed the mast head in the conventional place that you would usually see the mast head, at the top above the cover star. Its place in the center, following the thirds criteria for a magazine. I chose the this place on my cover for my magazine because the research I carried out on vibe magazine placed its masthead in the center of every magazine and so I placed mine there, not only cause I analysed the placement of vibe mastheads, but the composition of my magazine it self would have been thrown off it had been place else where. Ariel black , colored in was the font of my mast head, a bold and simple font that could be manipulated so could correlate with the target of my magazine which are mainstreamers . The colors that I change my logo to will respond to the main stream consumer, a target audience that changes more frequently than the other consumers. The text is not formal nor gender specific which means I can target either gender . My main objective is to target the male ratio so I changed the corlor of the header to a royal blue tone that would stereotypically be classified as a “ boy color,’’ to connote a male oriented magazine. The color is contrasts the background enough to stand out in plain sight so they’d see it on display on a self . My magazine layout is built around my cover star. The cover star in a magazine is very significant because when deciding the representation of your magazine and the target audience, it the cover star that compliments all those attributes and makes your magazine what it is . That is why most articles tend to have imagery with the text, to project the representation and impression of the magazine onto the reader. The position that my cover star, Xing, is placed in it to the left hand side of my cover. My reason for this is because in my pervious mock up I placed my cover star in the same position. Another reason for this is because if he was placed center page it would have messed up the flow and conventions of the page. If he was flipped and placed on the right hand side then he would have had his back facing the opening of the page that might’ve came across as rebellious or dysfunctional because to me its like his back is turned to his audience . He uses direct mode of address creating a personal appeal which is what I aim for with my audience. I did no use a puff for my magazine despite the survey saying that was what they looked forward to most in a magazine. I chose not to add a puff onto the cover of my magazine because I wanted my magazines main focus and curiosity to be placed on Xing because he is the main story in my magazine and he is what he mainstreamers should look forward to reading about. If I had the choice to add on a puff now I still probably wouldn’t have because my cover would’ve jam packed my cover and ruin the presentation and aura that I am trying to create. The splash containing the main story gives you insight on what you will see if you continue further on into the magazine. As most magazines do, I placed this convention near the cover star so that even if they cannot tell what the main story it would link back the cover star. The straplines on my cover are not balanced physically because of the position of my cover star and my barcode being placed on the bottom corner of my magazine. Though this is the case, my straplines don’t over load the page with irrelevant topics it all links back to my target consumers male main streamers aged 16-20.
  • 45. Continued… My contents page follows the conventions of an existing magazine but there are some differences. the main title used for this page is contents referencing what this page is and making it hard to miss. The magazine logo is placed in the corner above the date . I chose to lay it that way because though the logo was not completely shown that is something that doesn’t change as apposed to the date which changes with every issue. The fonts used on the contents page consisted of the same fonts on my magazine cover having it correspond and look like its all form the same magazine. The colors also served he same purpose. The way I used the colors on this is what made this page’s presentation good. I used the royal blues the high light stories within the contents people might find worth in looking into. . Resprise stamp was used in the latest hits on the cover page, it is also being used for the contents title and the numbers 50 and 63 in black pulling the readers attention. The captions and descriptions used through out my contents page were pulled from my cove page an external sources to support my target audience and encourage further read. All the contents for the page is placed on the left, giving space for the main image of the page to be seen. I did not want any words or shapes blocking hi body language to the point where you wouldn’t tell what he was doing. I I did not choose to add any advertisements on to he contents page because I want my whole magazine to have a personal appeal and I felt that having ads took away from that because it brought in a materialistic characteristic into the magazine which would appeal more to aspirers .
  • 46. Continued… The main image of my double page spread in placed directly. I placed it there because the spread that I looked at had a similar attribute and I was fond of it so I converted it into my own style that would look good on my spread with out imbalance the harmony I worked to create through out my work. The double page spreads article reads from right to left, a drop cap was used to direct the reader. I did it that way because the composition of the columns fit the page the opposite way and I didn’t mind the change in direction and thought it complimented the spread really well. The title ‘crown me, on the page uses anchorage toward the main image giving the meaning that he is some one of great capability and deserves his acknowledgment or praise. The contents of the spread , was an interview between Xing and an editor so that is why it is written in the style of a biography containing his greatest and darkest moments. It also contains a direct quote form Xing him self voicing his thoughts and purpose. The sub title ‘Xing,’ is placed over the main image leaving his face only vulnerable which has the effect of high lighting the expression on Xing’s face that shows the look of someone prosperous. The numbering for each page would be set on the top left and right of each page and would use the same font through this is a strategy that would encourage audiences further read. I placed the supporting image for my magazine on the double page spread because the image had a strong correlation to the article.
  • 47. 2. How does your media product represent particular social groups? My media product represents young black males ,aged 17-18 belonging to group E on the socio economic scale, those with the lowest level of income. My ideal target consumers are mainstreamers but my magazine contains hints of other consumer appeals too. The contents used in through out the production of my music magazine we up to date and modern which responds to the majority of youth today. To represent my audience I started by changing the color of my original title to the color of royal blue with is has the generalization of symbolizing the male gender. Though the font of my logo isn’t formal it isn’t immature neither’. You can use the metaphor ‘it is a teen. I chose a young black male that could be both serious but subtle and at the same time represent young ambitious black males that try to make some thing out of there l life through talents people would pay no mind unless someone of higher power were to recognize it. what he is wearing also reflects the target audience for my magazine. I wanted to create a figure for males trying to succeed in life and thought they were at their worst. Xing represents males, aged 16-20, who have ambitious characteristic and what they could achieve if they have the drive.
  • 48. 3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?  I conducted a research on media institutions to analyze which media institution would fit to distribute my magazine successfully to target audience. After doing so I decided to choose ’IPC,’ to distribute my magazine. It Is a well establish institution and is very popular.  They produce and create the magazine so that its possible to view them on your mobile devices and online. • 49. 4. Who would be the audience for your media product? My magazine is aimed a t an urban male audience, aged 16- 20.The main consumer I target are the main streamers, the largest consumer group of people across the world who reside in the socio- economic group, E. those with the lowest level of income, because the majority of my audience would be in some form of education and would not have time to work full time. My magazine consists of things that are judged by the general public, like greatest hits and the best artist to watch. The language, in which I use to target my audience demographic, is informal. I chose to write in this format because people the majority of people aged 16-20. It contains slang to directly target the urban demographic of my magazine which is the main target of my whole magazine. Though I used slang in my magazine article, I did avoid words that the general public wouldn’t hear on a daily basis so that it wouldn’t bring confusion .This links to the reason why I chose to do my interview in the form of a biography for my article. Doing an interview in the form of a biography allows me to grab both the personal and the professional aspect of my magazine as a whole and present it on the page that would attract the urban demographics, specifically males aged 16-20. The article does still portray the in which Xing uses, proven the given quote placed on the right side of the double page capturing the essence of his character. It complimented Xing because he is a humble person who speaks to people witch respect but at the same time in a friendly and close manner and it wouldn’t have made sense to change that whole aspect by having the article written in a formal way. That also would have missed my audience target. I chose to carry out the house style colors of white, grey, black and blue through out my magazine not only to have them correspond with each other but because it represents my target audience . The colors were calm to eyes and responded to my survey of the male’s perception of an ideal magazine.
  • 50. 5. How did you attract/address your audience? I included this Itunes QR reader to promote the album of my main image to link the age representation to my magazine. By this I mean that Technology is a common use of the people in this day and age due to its convenience allowing people to access things with out have to got to a store to physically buy it.
  • 51. 6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? Through out the production of my magazine I developed my images on the software photo shop in order to build the presentation for my magazine and its image. This software was the main editing used for my magazine I learned how to use several techniques and developed many skills during the process that included resizing, cropping eliminating the excess with the magic wand tool or air brush and color adjusting adding the layer of hue/saturation and then click colorize to change the color of the selected area on your image. which is what I used in both backgrounds for my cover and double page. The final production of my images broadcasts the skills in which I harnessed on photo shop. I also improved my photography skills while producing the potential images. I took several shots of my cover star doing different poses from different angles and lighting in order to determine the images that will proceed on to the final product of my magazine. This means I had to adjust the focus of the camera and stand in different positions taking into the consideration of the background and the poses of my cover star. For the article of my magazine the texts and composition of the page was constructed on the software InDesign. I learned how to column my text in way that wouldn’t take away from the main image of the page, also the importance of how many columns you use. Another tool I used was the change in character style which allowed me to construct a drop cap to signify the beginning of my article
  • 52. 7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? Comparing my preliminary task and my final product I can now see how much I've progressed in the production through out my coursework. I feel I’ve captured the essence of a real magazine because it did follow the convention a magazine enough to have a professional presentation. The straplines on both my are placed on the unspoken rule of third and all lined up vertically and wasn’t placed place thoughtlessly onto the page. How ever the left hand side of my music magazine was placed light more to the right because when viewing the conventions of an actual magazine the left side was always slightly more to the left because they didn’t want the binding of the magazine to interfere with the magazines presentation. After my research I learned more ways to construct the conventions one of my magazine that would pull the audiences attention. After, researching the bill board charts of the latest hits I placed that on the cover of my magazine so that my magazine contained real world evidence of hip-hop music today in the modern world. If I could change any aspect of my magazine cover it would be the kicker under my splash, because if you actually read my magazine article there not really a reference to his album excluding the promotional tag on the double page spread. I would have changed the kicker to say ‘Behind the Music’ because the article referrers to his background and events in his life Through the technologies of photo shop and InDesign I produced the final products of my magazine that would both represents and targets the audience through the use of conventions, mise en scene, house schemes, and the representation of cover stars. In conclusion, from doing the preliminary task, I developed an understanding of what it takes to make a successful magazine.
