Question 4
How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and
evaluation stages?
Research
As part of out research we interviewed people to see what they like to see in a music
video. We did a questionnaire and a physical interview. Our live audio interview was
used to see what our focus group would like to see from the band in their usual
videos. To record the answers that were given we used a sound recorder. The sound
recorder allowed us to get what our interviewees were saying straight from their
mouths and in their own words rather than is paraphrasing it for them. We then edited
this audio into a video form so that it would be more enjoyable to listen to rather than
one soundtrack. We managed to embed our chosen song in the video so that we have
something under the audio of the talking. We did by using Premier Pro, which we also
used in many other aspects of our project.
Our second method of interviews was the questionnaire we did. We did as a general
thing to make everything. To complete this we chose to do an online survey with
Survey Monkey. This allowed us to share our questions with a larger range of people
which meant that we could see a larger range of opinions.
Research
To see what our band was already putting out to their audience we analysed three
different music videos. This would be so we could see what kind of convention the
band followed or did not follow. To analyse the videos I used Adobe Premier Pro to
analyse the videos while showing them so that you can see what I’m talking about
while the video is playing. Premier allows us to edit the video freely and add our
annotations while the video is playing so that we don’t have to grab screenshots and
it’ll be easier to explain when you have a visual explanation rather than still shots of a
frame.
We also analysed different digipaks. Doing this allowed us to see what we considered
to be the best effects when making our own digipak. We also got a lot of inspiration
from the different styles of digipaks that there and the different covers we can use. To
edit our results together we simply used Microsoft PowerPoint to have a clean and
consistent show of our findings. We also used the same software for our finding when
we researched the adverts.
Planning – Music Video
For our music video we used a number of ways to plan our video. We started off by
listening to the song to gather what part of the plot we wanted where, after this we
began to plan each types of shot which we formulated into the shotlist. To do this we
used Microsoft word as a simple way to keep organised and yet make it simple. To
help with the organisation we also colour coded the shot list to make it easier when
we were filming by being able to pick out the shots in the different locations.
We also used Microsoft paint to help with the shot list, we used this to help explain a
shot if the other members of the group didn’t understand. Having the visual aid of
Paint helped to demonstrate the point
Production – Music Video
For our production we used a Canon Camera to record all our footage which we stored
on two 16GB SD cards. We used the camera to gain all our shots, using different
functions that the camera has allows us to crate different shots. For example, the shots
in the forest were filmed on two different days and two different locations, because of
this we were caught with different lighting on each days. To try and get it as consistent
as possible we changed the contrast on the camera depending on how bright the
natural light was. We also experimented with the zoom and focus to try and create
some different shots, however we learnt we couldn’t zoom and keep focus
simultaneously. Because of this we has to change our shots while we were on location
For our editing we used Adobe Premier Pro. Using this software we were able to create
different effects we couldn’t achieve of the shoots, such as the black and white filter on
the band shots, and the transitions between the ‘past’ and ‘present’.
Planning - Digipak
To help plan for our digipak we created some mock-up versions of our initial idea of
what the front cover would look like. We used photos that we found off the internet as
this was before we went out and did some photography. We did a very rough version
so that we didn’t invest too much time into the design if we decided we then didn’t
like it. To edit this together we used Adobe Photoshop to allow us to combine
different layers together and combine them to create our image we wanted.
This also allowed us to see whether the ideas we had were good enough to be
developed into a final idea or whether they don’t work out as we has expected them
to.
Production - Digipak
For our digipak we also used Photoshop as it had all the features we needed for the
digipak. The images used on the digipak all had adjustments made to them. In the
front, back and background of where the CDs are we used different levels of the tools
burn and scratch to brighten and darken specific places on the images. This allowed us
to create the right amount of shadows and level out the contrast levels in the
photographs we took. We also used a blur tool on the front cover to allow the
attention to go the bear in the foreground rather than the background. For the image
with the band we used Creative Cloud to add a filter to drain the colour and put a
slight blue tint on the image. This was done to create a similar colour scheme to the
other images in the digipak
The text in the back cover was combined with the glow embellishment to create this
eerie glow around the text to give it this ghostly effect and to make it stand out
against the whiter background.
Production - Advertisement
For the advert we used many of the same steps as we did for the digipak however we
created more versions of the advert slightly changing a part each time. This was also
done in Photoshop. For our advert we made use of the locking tool on the different
layers. This was used so that the things we were happy with on each version could stay
the same while we changed other aspects of the advert.
