EVALUATION - How did you use media
technologies in the construction and
research, planning and evaluation
stages?
Eman Shah
I came across a wide range of technologies, me and my
production group found this as an advantage. At the
beginning of our production we had used the internet to
research into our genre, short films relating to our genre
and also the common conventions relating to short
films. An example of this would be applying theories.
The theories we looks was Todorov's theory on
Equilibrium, Roland Barthes theory on semantics and
Vladimir Propp's theory on Characteristics. We applied
each of these theories in our film
TECHNOLOGY USED – INTERNET
The internet was a great advantage to me and my production
group as we came across YouTube. This had allowed us to
watch short films to get inspiration and ideas from. On
YouTube we also watched Edius Tutorials to gain knowledge -
The software what we used to edit our film on. YouTube also
allowed us to watch a variety videos on making a good short
film. YouTube was a great success to us because it allowed us
to create a free account on which we could publish our work
(videos on).
TECHNOLOGY USED – SLIDESHARE &
IMDB
We also published our work on Slide Share. This is a
website I used not only to research, but throughout
it's process it has allowed me to publish power points
and word documents on to my Media Blog. I also used
IMDB for research as well, which is a film site where
you can get all the latest information about a film, the
cast, storyline, review, running time and many more
aspects.
TECHNOLOGY USED - EDIUS
Edius is a software that allowed us to edit our short film. We
uploaded all the footage and we were then able to connect them in
different orders to make a consistent piece of film. Not only does it
let you manipulate the order of film, but you can add sounds,
change the colour, layer shots, take stills, change the speed etc. This
piece of software proved to be one of the biggest factors in creating
a professional looking film, as it created an effect which we could
control and change whenever we wanted. Edius is highly developed
which means we made our media product so it had an
understandable storyline. Colour Balancing is also a feature on Edius
for example if you are wanting to change a bright day to a dark
night, it would allow you to do that.
TECHNOLOGY USED – MICROSOFT
WORD & GOOGLE
In preparation for our film, creating storyboard
templates on Microsoft Word meant that I was able to
make them look professional which meant looking for
guidance on Google contributed to this. I also used
Google for ideas on posters and titles and reviews for
my production tasks as this showed me a major variety
of what I was looking for broadening my options and
being able to find a style for my target audience.
TECHNOLOGY USED MICROSOFT
WORD & POWERPOINT
I also used Microsoft Word which is a computer
software that allowed me to create documents during
the production process. I mainly used this software
when doing research. For example creating a
questionnaire. I used Microsoft Power point to create
presentations which I could then upload on to my
blog.
TECHNOLOGY USED – CAMERAS AND
LIGHTING
To find the right characters for our production, we used
video cameras which included microphones which have
high quality recorders. So therefore we could make a
clear judgement to see who fit the roles best. We used
strong lighting equipment when we filmed in Katies
house and it’s high wattage allowed us to dim and
change the brightness to our needs, so depending on
the shot, we could create a mood even before editing.
STORYBOARDING
Storyboarding was key to post production, we
drew them by hand and scanned them into
Photoshop to colour them. We did this, so then
they will look professional. It was essential that
all of us uploaded them onto our blogs so this
would mean we would have access to them
whilst filming.
Technology dramatically improved our film as the high quality
cameras with attachable microphones, the jib and the tripods as
well as the lighting massively contributed to a successful film.
Having access to this equipment and not just one camera but a
few sets made the filming process so much easier and efficient
meaning rather than repeating the shots we could set up the
cameras at the angle we wanted and cover the whole scene
without there being a disruption in continuity. All our clips and
sound were saved to an SD card provided with the cameras, the
process of uploading these clips to Edius 7 to begin editing was
simple. Inserting the card into the computer and transferring
the files to my own Edius 7 documents to view them in the ‘bin’
section on the software, then I was able to begin editing.
