Question 5
How did you
attract/address your
audience?
In my product I produced a two minute opening thriller sequence therefore it was crucial that we appealed to
the audience in various ways – we planned out various research techniques in order to find how to address and
attract our target audience.
This includes;
- Audience Research
- Questionnaire
- Focus Group
The main way in which we attracted the audience is with the genre & the plot – we chose thriller & used a traditional
storyline as the plot (A curse) as it is one of the most popular and intriguing forms of film.

YES NO
DID THIS FEEL LIKE THE BEGINNING OF
A FILM?
In order to attract and address my audience we produced an audience feedback sheet in order to successfully
produce a product which would appeal to the viewer, below are the replies that we received, after this I edited the
product so that it would better suit the audience and reflect the feedback.
Audience Feedback
Audience feedback analysis
1. Did the editing suit the film and make it easier to understand?
The majority of the audience said the editing suited the film, therefore I made no radical changes and maintained the same type of editing
with minor changes such as transitions of clips – this would attract the audience as the editing was successful in some manner therefore
allowing positive feedback from viewers.
2. Did you understand the storyline?
Majority of the audience said they understood but in comments we received I realised I had not included a clip that showed the friend going
missing, she simply disappears, therefore I decided to use the sound of one clip which said ‘Carolina, where are you’ this demonstrates that
she has gone missing but it does not answer why therefore leaving an element of curiosity – this attracts the audience seeing as curiosity will
increase the chances of them continuing to watch.
3. What type of genre does this film look like?
All the audience said horror which Is correct therefore showing that in this aspect the correct audience had been addressed.
4. Did the sound work well with the images?
Majority of audience said no, and did not believe the sound worked well with the images therefore after receiving the feedback I edited the
sound and added transitions to it in order for them to follow with the pictures – I ensured the sound wasn’t too loud and would change at
appropriate times, I also added a new sound effect right at the end of a scream to frighten the viewer.
5. Did the titles help you understand the film?
Majority said yes, but I was also told in further comments that the titles made it look to much like a trailer opposed to an opening film
sequence, therefore I narrowed it down to 3 – one included credits, ‘based on a true story’ & SANN production
6. Did this feel like the beginning of a film?
Although majority said yes, we were told my numerous people that it looked too much like a trailer due to some aspects therefore I changed
these in order for it to attract the viewers.
All this feedback allowed me to get a greater understanding on the way in which I had to edit the product in order for it too attract/address
my audience – after editing all the faults in my product it attracted and addressed the audience in a better form as it reflected the way in
which they thought the product should look.
Attracting & addressing the audience
Before the production of my product I had to find who my audience was in order to attract and address to them, this was
done in numerous ways, that of which includes a questionnaire.
Firstly, it was found that more females roughly around the ages of 15-20 would be watching the film therefore a form of
attraction and addressing was with the use of the characters, both characters were female in their teenage years (16/17)
which meant the audience could possibly feel more connected and involved to the plot of the film as it could represent
on themselves.
The questionnaire demonstrated that the audience had a multi cultural background, the two main ethnicity's were white
British & other – this is presented also in the characters are one of the characters is British whereas the other is Hispanic
which reflects back on the audience.
It was found that the majority of the audience actually have horror films as their favourite movie genre meaning my film
would attract to them and intrigue them more so than if it were a heist or rom-com.
The audience said they watch films ‘for the thrill’ – this was reflected back on my product seeing as there is a high level of
mystery nor does it reveal all meaning the thrill is increased seeing as the audience is unable to guess what’s going to
happen, also the fact that she is running reflects this answer seeing as it increases suspense and raises the question who
she’s running from and whether she's going to get caught or not.
Haunted house was the most preferred location, although, Isolated outdoor setting was also popular choice, we merged
both these locations together so that they were both in the opening sequence therefore attracting the audience and
addressing to the likes of the audience.
Lastly, it was found that the story line was the main attraction of a film & that a paranormal plot was the most preferred,
this was reflected in my product – the storyline was completely based around a paranormal curse which was caused by a
diary – this would attract the audience and address their preferences meaning a successful opening sequence.
How did we address our audience with media conventions?
I, as the editor was in charge of ensuring the final product addressed and attracted our target demographic, I done this in many ways, that of
which includes using the audience feedback as a basis for how to attract our audience.
Other ways in which I did this was with the way in which the product was produced & edited, this comes under various headings; Mise-En-
Scene, Sound, Camera shots & Editing
Sound________________________________
The sound was inspired by already made films therefore it would
attract a target demographic which perhaps had seen or was
interested in those films, these films consist of The Ring, The
Conjuring etc.
Therefore, it would attract ‘horror/thriller film viewers/fanatics’
Mise-En-Scene___________________________
Characters
As you can see the
characters address and
attract our audience as
it can reflect on them
– I found from
research and personal
experience that people
are more likely to
watch a film if the
characters are closer
to their own age &
have a same type of
form – these
characters are clearly
teenagers/young
adults and have a type
of style which
represents the
majority of the youth
today.
Props
This is the front
cover of the
diary that is
discovered – this
attracts the
audience as
again, it can be
used as an
imitation to as
how real media
products use
props as a key
technique in
their films to
increase
suspense and
reflect on the
plot – this was
used to increase
attention &
develop an eerie
feel to the film.
Editing & Camera Shots_________________________
This is a close up shot – this attracts the audience as the
majority of the sequence consists of over the shoulder
shots and medium shots therefore the fact that all of a
sudden a close up shot takes place will hopefully
frighten the viewer
The editing process which was done in this is that I cut it
down so that it was only shown for around 1-2 seconds
then the screen blacked out for half a second and
continued – if successful this would attract the viewer
as it adds suspense.
This form of editing was produced in motion – the reason this attracts the
audience is due to the effect – the shadow which passes through the editing
makes it seem as an unknown source; this increases the curiosity of the viewer
and increases the likelihood of them to continue to watch.
This close up shot
attracts the viewer
as it highlights the
piece of paper which
clearly has
something to do
with the plot – this,
lie the title screen
increases curiosity
and allows the
viewer to want to
continue watching.

This includes; - Audience Research - Questionnaire - Focus Group Click to see research. Audience Feedback
  • 3. Audience feedback analysis 1. Did the editing suit the film and make it easier to understand? The majority of the audience said the editing suited the film, therefore I made no radical changes and maintained the same type of editing with minor changes such as transitions of clips – this would attract the audience as the editing was successful in some manner therefore allowing positive feedback from viewers. 2. Did you understand the storyline? Majority of the audience said they understood but in comments we received I realised I had not included a clip that showed the friend going missing, she simply disappears, therefore I decided to use the sound of one clip which said ‘Carolina, where are you’ this demonstrates that she has gone missing but it does not answer why therefore leaving an element of curiosity – this attracts the audience seeing as curiosity will increase the chances of them continuing to watch. 3. What type of genre does this film look like? All the audience said horror which Is correct therefore showing that in this aspect the correct audience had been addressed. 4. Did the sound work well with the images? Majority of audience said no, and did not believe the sound worked well with the images therefore after receiving the feedback I edited the sound and added transitions to it in order for them to follow with the pictures – I ensured the sound wasn’t too loud and would change at appropriate times, I also added a new sound effect right at the end of a scream to frighten the viewer. 5. Did the titles help you understand the film? Majority said yes, but I was also told in further comments that the titles made it look to much like a trailer opposed to an opening film sequence, therefore I narrowed it down to 3 – one included credits, ‘based on a true story’ & SANN production 6. Did this feel like the beginning of a film? Although majority said yes, we were told my numerous people that it looked too much like a trailer due to some aspects therefore I changed these in order for it to attract the viewers. All this feedback allowed me to get a greater understanding on the way in which I had to edit the product in order for it too attract/address my audience – after editing all the faults in my product it attracted and addressed the audience in a better form as it reflected the way in which they thought the product should look.
  • 4. Attracting & addressing the audience Before the production of my product I had to find who my audience was in order to attract and address to them, this was done in numerous ways, that of which includes a questionnaire. Firstly, it was found that more females roughly around the ages of 15-20 would be watching the film therefore a form of attraction and addressing was with the use of the characters, both characters were female in their teenage years (16/17) which meant the audience could possibly feel more connected and involved to the plot of the film as it could represent on themselves. The questionnaire demonstrated that the audience had a multi cultural background, the two main ethnicity's were white British & other – this is presented also in the characters are one of the characters is British whereas the other is Hispanic which reflects back on the audience. It was found that the majority of the audience actually have horror films as their favourite movie genre meaning my film would attract to them and intrigue them more so than if it were a heist or rom-com. The audience said they watch films ‘for the thrill’ – this was reflected back on my product seeing as there is a high level of mystery nor does it reveal all meaning the thrill is increased seeing as the audience is unable to guess what’s going to happen, also the fact that she is running reflects this answer seeing as it increases suspense and raises the question who she’s running from and whether she's going to get caught or not. Haunted house was the most preferred location, although, Isolated outdoor setting was also popular choice, we merged both these locations together so that they were both in the opening sequence therefore attracting the audience and addressing to the likes of the audience. Lastly, it was found that the story line was the main attraction of a film & that a paranormal plot was the most preferred, this was reflected in my product – the storyline was completely based around a paranormal curse which was caused by a diary – this would attract the audience and address their preferences meaning a successful opening sequence.
  • 5. How did we address our audience with media conventions? I, as the editor was in charge of ensuring the final product addressed and attracted our target demographic, I done this in many ways, that of which includes using the audience feedback as a basis for how to attract our audience. Other ways in which I did this was with the way in which the product was produced & edited, this comes under various headings; Mise-En- Scene, Sound, Camera shots & Editing Sound________________________________ The sound was inspired by already made films therefore it would attract a target demographic which perhaps had seen or was interested in those films, these films consist of The Ring, The Conjuring etc. Therefore, it would attract ‘horror/thriller film viewers/fanatics’ Mise-En-Scene___________________________ Characters As you can see the characters address and attract our audience as it can reflect on them – I found from research and personal experience that people are more likely to watch a film if the characters are closer to their own age & have a same type of form – these characters are clearly teenagers/young adults and have a type of style which represents the majority of the youth today. Props This is the front cover of the diary that is discovered – this attracts the audience as again, it can be used as an imitation to as how real media products use props as a key technique in their films to increase suspense and reflect on the plot – this was used to increase attention & develop an eerie feel to the film.
  • 6. Editing & Camera Shots_________________________ This is a close up shot – this attracts the audience as the majority of the sequence consists of over the shoulder shots and medium shots therefore the fact that all of a sudden a close up shot takes place will hopefully frighten the viewer The editing process which was done in this is that I cut it down so that it was only shown for around 1-2 seconds then the screen blacked out for half a second and continued – if successful this would attract the viewer as it adds suspense. This form of editing was produced in motion – the reason this attracts the audience is due to the effect – the shadow which passes through the editing makes it seem as an unknown source; this increases the curiosity of the viewer and increases the likelihood of them to continue to watch. This close up shot attracts the viewer as it highlights the piece of paper which clearly has something to do with the plot – this, lie the title screen increases curiosity and allows the viewer to want to continue watching.
