1. Research into Magazine Institutions
IPC MEDIA
IPC media were established in 1963. IPC media are a magazine institution whereby they own many
brands of magazine such as NME for example. They focus on the wide amount of genres of music
within the industry and try to help up and coming artists on their way to the top. One of their main
aims is ‘to have a successful relationship with its consumers, advertisers, business partners and
employees to deliver exceptional value, service, innovation and creativity.’ This was taken from the
IPC media website. IPC media have three working publishing divisions, IPC connect, IPC inspire and
IPC Southbank. IPC connect is aimed at the women’s side of the industry reaching out to a wide
range of them through digital use. Their digital brands also reach over 5.3 million users and more.
IPC Southbank on the other hand, still branches out to women but through lifestyle, fashion and
home interest. Lastly IPC Inspire is the men’s division of magazine offering names such as NME, Nuts
and Country Life. IPC media are quite mainstream as they offer a wide range of mainstream titles
such as Nuts and NME.
Bauer
Bauer was established in 1953 with the launch of the Angling Times. Bauer magazine offer over 300
magazine titles in 15 different countries. The largest publisher in Europe also offers digital use such
as online, mobile apps and tablet use. Bauer are a multi-platform company owned by two divisions,
magazine and radio. The radio business seeds back into the attainment of Kiss 100, Magic 105.4 and
Liverpool’s radio city; this would increase their advertisement base. The hugely selling magazine now
known as FHM was bought from a small company called ‘For Him’. Bauer also offer many women’s
titles, one example would be Grazia which was recently released in 2005. Bauer are mainstream as
they associate themselves with mainstream radio stations that play mainstream music.
2. EMAP
‘EMAP owns industry-leading brands that sit at the heart of business powerful B2B communities like
Retail, Health, Construction, Architecture, and Fashion.

and win. Brands such as HSJ and Retail Week create deep relationships and unparalleled reach, to
increase value for our customers.’ Taken from EMAP website. EMAP are the biggest industry insider,
helping the industry more than anything else and striving to help other achieve as well as
themselves. EMAP refer to themselves as ‘their competitive advantage’ implying that they are giving
others help to get them an advantage over their opponents. EMAP were established in 1947 and
were founded earlier than those of Bauer and IPC Media. EMAP are a mainstream company as they
help those who class their products as mainstream.
Future
Future PLC were founded in 1985 and have operations in the UK, the USA and Australia creating over
200 apps, web, events and publications. Their core divisions are in technology, entertainment and
video games, sport and auto, music and creative. All of which apply to both women and men. Future
take pride in their digital use of media and over 50 million viewers are attracted to this service, they
also sell over 2.2 million copies of their magazine a year. Future PLC has one of the most known
magazine titles in the industry which is highly competed with, Metal Hammer, which has a very
niche market as it only attracts those who are interested in Rock and Metal.
I think that I would like for IPC media to own my magazine as they are very experienced with owning
many successful magazine titles and this would be the best choice for my magazine to quickly be
known among those who are faithful to IPC.
