the use of five elements of
representation that are
gender, age, race, sexuality and
class.

2. A way in which our media product represents these particular social groups is with
gender. The reason that it represents gender
is as the title sequence/film only has Masculine , male characters are and there are
no females or femininity. An example of this that is constructed with mise
en scene is the fact that all the men in the title sequence/film are wearing
suits which ideology classes as being a masculine style of clothing that also connotes
power , importance and authority. However in our title sequence/film circumstances a suit
doesn’t necessary show class and wealth. This is where our film has oppositional readings
as even though our characters are wearing suits the situations and locations that they
are surrounded with are low class like the dark and run down gang hide out which
contrasts with their high class suits. Sexuality is also being represented

3. A way that our media product represents another particular social
group is with race. An example of this is the fact that there is only one
black person in our title sequence/film. Although the white gangster
who is hunting there gang members down is the most powerful
over all and then there is also the other white gang member that is
gambling with the black gang member, the black gang member is showing
more power over the white gang member.The reasons for this is because in
the shots the black gang member is handling the drugs which connotes power
and authority over the white gang member so therefore this perpetuates the
black man as the criminal who is also the only gang member to be seen drinking
his alcoholic beverage, whisky which connotes masculinity as ideology pins
whisky as a male alcoholic drink as still carries the connotations of America’s early
attitudes toward liquor that it is not lady like to drink this type of beverage also its
often the older generation that are seen drinking whisky especially in old fashioned
films and it has powerful wisdom attached to it. The black gang member is also the
one who wins the card/poker game that is in play between them as they both place
down there cards down in a domino effect but the black gang member
has the better hand and then takes the winnings. This leaves the white gang member
the less powerful race, which adheres to common ideology in gang culture.

4. Although we have used younger actors, we have
Adhered to the time period with the mise en
scene, sound ,editing and camera.

5. The use of camera also constructs different social groups. An example for this
is when a high angle shot is used over the white gang member that is playing
cards and gambling in the hide out. This connotes that the white gang member
has alow percentage of power and allows the audience to literally look down
on his behaviour, and the criminal situation he is in, surrounded with illegal drugs
, alcohol and gambling.
Also we have used a lot of cropping in and
not showing the whole scene that is in shot.
By doing this it doesn’t let the audience
establish the scene and the surroundings or
person to the full. An example of this is not
allowing the gangster and gang members
whole face/body to be seen all at once,
only glimmers and glances. This connotes
tension and suspense but more importantly
that these type of people cant be trusted as
there bodies and faces are obscured at all
times, making the audience feel on edge
and connoting apprehensive and
uncomfortable vibes.

6. We have followed preferred readings with
the suit and class and status exception, as
we were following these social groups and
the forms and conventions of gangster films
and adhering to common ideology.
