Mise-en-scene
What does mise-en-scene mean?
The phase mise-en-scene is French for everything in the scene, like: costume,
lighting, props, colour, set.
What are the 6 key areas of mise-en-scene?
Colour,costume,props,set/location,blockingandperformance, lighting.
Colour:
How is colour used in the 3 below pictures?
On the outside cruela drevil is white to show that on the outside she may seem pure
and innocent but on the inside she is black and red to show she is evil and not as
innocent as once seemed, her black and white hair also represents how she is very
50/50 and not as she seems. Maleficent is wearing all black which has connotations
of death and evil, her green skin represents jealousy and envy. The fact she has a
raven shows further connotations of death. Cinderella’s white sparkly dress shows
that she a pure and whole women, blue is also a royal colour and shows wealth and
importance.
Costume:
What can we interpret from these costumes?
The image on the left clearly are of the lower working class as you can tell because
of their clothing, they are wearing puffer jackets and tracksuits these are stereo
typical clothing items of a poorer family. The image on the left shows two men of a
higher class as they are wearing nice trench coats and jackets that look smart.

Props:
Option 1 - You have to provide props for a tense police interview between two
officers and one suspected murderer. Decide what props you would incorporate and
how the actors should be directed to use them.
Option 2 – You have to provide props for a romantic meal between two characters
on their first date. Decide what props you would incorporate and how the actors
should be directed to use them.
Props needed:
Candle, flowers, wine, food, knife and fork, chairs, jackets
How would actors be directed to use them:
The male character should pull the chair out for the women to show that he is a
respectful gentleman, there should be a candle in the middle of the table although
the actors don’t interact with the prop it gives the scene more of a romantic feel, wine
is the drink of choice at a posh romantic meal so the man should poor his woman a
glass of wine, the jackets shouldn’t come of straight away to show they are not yet
comfortable however when they start talking they can take them off.
Location:
Can be a purpose built set or a real location]
Blocking/Performance:
 Blocking refers to the positioning and movement of actors within the frame,
both in relation to each other and in relation to the camera (which represents
us, the audience)
 Performance covers all aspects of the actual acting – gesture, expression,
accent etc
Lighting:
How is lighting being used to create mood in the following examples?
The image on the left has a darker lighting to show more of a dangerous and maybe
spooky atmosphere alongside this the set is possibly in an alley way or an
abandoned ware house with barbed wire fence and spray paint this also supports the
Mise-en-scene
dangerous atmosphere. The characters faces are solemn and blank to show there is
no happiness in this scene. The image on the right has more light and gives off more
of a positive vibe the woman has more light shining on her possibly to show she is
more important or positive character. The light in the room makes the audience think
the characters are safe as generally nothing really happens in day time.
Props used by character in house:
Walking stick/cane, gun, pen, phone, watch, paper aeroplane, boom box, bottle, ice
cream sandwich, butchers knife.
What kind of a person house is:
House is an unorthodox, slightly wacky character who works at a hospital, he
clearly has some superiority as he has the power to fire people. The use of the gun
and butchers knife shows he is not a normal doctor and that he has a lack of
respect for his patients.
