HOW DOESYOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT REPRESENT
PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS?
Our media product represents particular social groups mainly through the use of mis
en scene, camera and editing, however, also through sound too. The main social
group our film opening focuses upon is our target audience therefore, the audience
will be able to relate to the film and probably like it more as a result of this, a way in
which they can relate is due to the majority of actors being of a similar age to the
target audience. Furthermore, parts of our film link to the typical stereotypes of the
actors age. E.g.Teenager who mugs/robs briefcase towards the end of the opening.
Moreover, our film opening also represents a middle-aged man. This character comes
across to the audience as more composed and calm about the exchange that is
happening, contrasting to the younger man who is shown as more vulnerable as he
gets attacked later on into the opening.
The social group of gender in our film opening is represented as there is no female
characters in our media product. As a result this shows that our opening conforms
to the stereotypes and that it is mainly men who take part in deals and meets,
similar to the one shown in our opening. Therefore, we felt the need to have no
female roles as this was against what society portrays as right, therefore, adding
to the realism of our opening.
Also, the characters in our opening have very little emotion on their faces,
conforming to the stereotype that men do/should have little emotion and that
women show their emotions much more. Therefore, by the characters showing no
emotion on their faces, it makes them look more dominant and assertive in the
scene.
Social class in our film represents middle-high class as this is the class of the
characters completing the exchange, this is evident through the use of costume
and how the two people completing the deal are dressed smartly showing that
they have wealth. Also both people completing the exchange are completing it for
themselves and are living up to the stereotype that most high class people are
self-centred. On the contrary, the character which ends up robbing the person
with the briefcase is of lower class, which is also evident through his costume,
especially how the character is wearing ripped jeans. Also, he is wearing dark
clothing which has connotations of anti-social behaviour and a negative
stereotype of his lower class.
