2. How effective is the
combination of your main
product and ancillary texts?
EMOTIONS
• Ellie Goulding’s song Explosion, is a song filled with emotions that
can be explored in difficult situations, or in situations one does not
wish to happen. For example a Break-up, a death, or even the
moment where you have lost something significant. In all these
situations the same array of emotions can be
found, Sadness, Anger, Loneliness, Anguish, Scared, Heart
Broken...........
• All these emotions are to do with one’s state of mind, therefore by
creating a music video, and a similar Digipak which can influence or
reflect these emotions, I am able to convince my audience of what
the song’s true meaning is.
• With the use of my actress’ performance throughout the Music
Video, and the use of effects I have later added I am able to convey
this emotions. This can be said for my Digipak by the use of body
language and effects.
LONELINESS

Loneliness is a key emotion that is perceived in
everybody’s life. I believe this song represents the
after maths of a long term relationship, therefore
loneliness is a key attribute to the performance and
narrative of the Music Video, in order for me to
portray this emotion within my Music Video I have
ensured is that my artist is alone in her performance.
For example I have not used a typical boy and girl in
love scenario, I have focused on her being alone.
Cinematography is essential for enabling my audience
to understand this, by the use of a long shot the
audience can see my artist is alone, also nearer the
end of my music video having a close up and pan of
her body and face represents her body language, as
my artist is lonely. I have ensured that she looks
straight at a focal point and not at the camera, this
represents her daydreaming or reminiscing on her
past, making the audience feel sympathy for my artist.

At the same time in order for my Digipak to
have an obvious connection with my Music
Video, I have to have the same attributes that
can be seen and explored throughout both
media products. Loneliness can be seen on the
inside of my CD case, where there is a picture of
my main artist looking solemnly out of a
window, due to her body language is can be
identified that Loneliness is a key aspect, having
my digipak in colour also helps to convey the
tone of Loneliness especially the colour
grey, which I have used throughout my Digipak.
The use of having my artist in “comfortable
clothing” connotes to my audience that she is
feeling quite lonely, where there could be many
plausible reason for this.
CONFUSION
•

•

With the use of fades and overlays in
my Music Video I am able to present
a sense of confusion to my audience.
Confusion represents that my artist
doesn’t know what she wants to do.
With confusion comes anger, as she
does not know what to do it angers
her, therefore hitting a drum to allow
that emotion to explode, with the
uses of these props the audience
thus link the original use for drum
sticks to Heavy rock bands, Rock is
said to part of the origin of Indie
Pop, this in it’s self represents anger.

•

Using the effect of overlay in
Photoshop I have overlapped my
artist doing a hair flip this represents
my artist as not knowing what she
wants, or doesn’t know what to do.
There are many different layers to my
artist, i.e different emotions to her
not just how we perceive her but
what is on the inside.
Where I have positioned the overlays
and fades on the front and back
cover represents that this is a
common emotions shown
throughout the songs in the album
whether it be it is confused on the
genre it should be in or, if the artist is
confused her self.
CONTRASTS
•

•

The BLACK & WHITE effect is a typical
conventional effect when to portray a sad
love story and the audience are programmed
to know when seeing something in black and
white something sad is bound to happen.
The contrast of black and white represent
the good and bad side of a
relationship, therefore I have used blue and
purple to integrate into one another on the
Digipak as dark blue connotes as “love
struck” and dark purple connotes as
“romance and love” combining these to
colours explores the love side of the
relationship, where the black and white
explores the more deeper and darker feeling
that are found at the end of a relationship.
Fire works, how she is to an extent hiding
behind the fireworks, to hid her emotions of
happiness, and allow her
anger, confused, scared emotions to show.
The fireworks connotes the explosions of her
emotions, thus linking with the lyrics of the
song.

Having parts blurred in and parts bold in my
digipak not only attracts my audience but
also connotes to them that is a contrast
within my main artist her self, she is not able
to control her emotions. Having a blurred
background and keeping my artist
bold, enables an eye catcher, and also her
body/facial language. I have done this so that
when my audience looks at the picture they
can see the confusion on her face, whilst
looking into her imagery world.
The contrast of overlay and boldness is
essential, while having a heavy bold Font
exposes a strong independent artist however
the blurredness of the behind picture shows
that me artist is that that is just a cover for
her hidden inner emotions.
Most of the outbreaks of my artist’ actions or
perceptions, are to do with her explosion of
emotions, where is finally lets out all her
hidden emotions, instead of keeping them
hidden.
