How effective is the
combination of your main
product and ancillary texts?
Black and white effect
The black and white effect runs throughout my music video, digipak and
advert. It is a constant theme and it represents the sadness and the
isolation that the two artists are feeling. It enables the audience to
understand the feelings of the artists and they can tell that the album and
the songs are going to be sad. It also fits in with the conventions of the
rock-pop genre because whenever rock-pop artists sing sad songs, they
usually use the black and white effect in order to portray those feelings.
Themes
The main themes that are portrayed in my music video, digipak and advert are the themes of loneliness and
isolation. One way that I showed these themes in the music video was where the two artists parents are sitting down
and they cant look at their children; this shows the isolation and segregation that they are feeling. In my advert I
tried to portray these themes by placing the two artists apart from each other and holding their arms out towards
each other showing that they cannot be together even though they want to. The themes that run throughout the
main product and ancillary texts fit in with the typical conventions of the pop-rock genre because most artists in
that genre sing about loneliness and isolation, for example Maroon 5 and Never Gonna Leave This Bed. By having
these themes in my main product and ancillary texts, it allows my target audience to relate to the artists because
most teenagers, at some stage, would go through their lives feeling lonely and isolated.
Mise en scene - location
The location in my main product and ancillary texts are very similar; I made sure that they were all in a
field, alone because this represents the loneliness and segregation as they are the only people on the
field. A field is a simple location which also fits in with one of the themes and with the conventions of
pop-rock as the genre consists of simple things like locations.
Costumes
The costumes that I used in my music video are the same costumes used in the digipak and advert. I
wanted the costumes to fit the target audience and the typical conventions of the genre which is why
I decided to make the main artist wear a dress, so she could fit in with the pop side of the genre, and
the other artist wear a plain, dark top and dark jeans, so she could fit in with the rock side of the genre.
Both costumes fit in with the target audience because they aren’t overly expensive branded clothes,
that celebrities wear, instead they are simple, affordable and causal clothes which my target
audience would probably wear.
Font
The font that I used in my digipak and advert is the same; it is a simple font and easy to read and
understand. I wanted to use the simple font because ‘simpleness’ is a typical convention of rock-pop.
It enables the target audience to understand what is written on the ancillary texts and they would then
hopefully buy the album. It also represents the simpleness of the album and how everything is stripped
down and bare and it isn’t all happy, pop music, instead it’s a lot more meaningful and personal.
Narrative
The narrative throughout my music video, digipak
and advert is the same; I wanted the same
message to run throughout all products so that it is
clear and understood. The narrative in the music
video shows that the two artists want to be
together but their love is rejected by society and
they’re isolated from everything. The way that I
showed this in my digipak and advert is by having
the two artists standing apart from each other,
and the gap between them shows the barrier that
society puts on them. The narrative helps promote
my artist because it is a memorable message and
the target audience might be able to relate to
the story behind it, they might have had an
experience in the past where they felt rejected by
society therefore they will be able to relate to the
artists.
Portrayal of characters
In my music video, digipak and advert, the portrayal of the two characters are the same throughout. The
main artist is portrayed as the weaker, less confident person in the relationship, she is the one that, in the
end, kills herself because she cannot cope anymore. The other artist is portrayed as the stronger and more
powerful artist, this is shown as she can handle the pressure. In my digipak I portrayed these characteristics
by having the more powerful artist on the right hand side of the digipak, showing her dominance as it makes
her look taller than the other artist. In the music video, I also made sure that these characteristics are
portrayed by having the less dominant character stand behind the other artist to show her weakness as it
seems like she is hiding behind her.
