1. In what ways does your
    media product use,
develop or challenge forms
 and conventions of real
      media products?
This media product uses and develops forms and conventions of real media products in many ways. One
example of this would be in one of the scenes in the music video the main performer is filmed in a medium
close up shot next to a mirror, using mirrors in shots is a common convention in many music videos such as
Justin Timberlake’s video: mirrors. Filming with a mirror was done to convey the performers emotions and
to demonstrate a feeling of self reflection, a concept that artists aim to put across to create a connection
with the audience / and or their fans, which contributes to the formation of the product as a whole as this
helps shape the artists image.
One way that this media product uses and develop forms and conventions of real music
videos is through the mise-en-scene. The main performer has dark eye makeup and big
hair, this is to suggest she is distressed, worried or going through trouble. This hair and
makeup can also be seen in Marina and The Diamonds music video: I am not a robot. The
audience can assume that the director was also aiming to portray this same effect as the
lyrics suggest negativity and trying to break free from something which is a similar concept
to the lyrics of The Gospel.
Another way that this media product has used and developed forms and conventions of real
media products is that the album cover’s main image is an image of the artist itself and the
text is incorporated to work with the image instead of being a title at the top or bottom of the
album cover. This can also be seen in Marina and the Diamonds album: The Family Jewels.
This music video uses forms and conventions of real media products such as music videos is there are both
the narrative and performance based shots in the video which can also be seen in Beyonce’s
irreplaceable video however, the music video challenges these generic codes and conventions to some
extent as the music video is both narrative and performance based however usually the focus is more on
the narrative, however the focus in this media product is more on the performance based shots.

                                               Narrative

                                       Performance
One way that this music video develops generic codes and conventions is that the
performance shots take place on location as opposed to being in a studio or gig based,
which, like in Maroon 5’s video this love which is in a studio, most performance shots in
music videos do take place.
One way that this media product also uses forms and conventions of real media products is
that they both have star ratings however this media product also challenges these forms
and conventions as there is only one star rating and most of the advertisement is the
image of the artist whereas in real media products it is normally only half of the
advertisement.
