In what ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions
of real media products?
Daniella Johnston
Title
Here are some real media
products that have title
sequences for their music
videos. After looking at
various styles and genres, I
found that this is used more
frequently on genres such as
RnB, dance and pop in
comparison to indie and
rock, although there are still
a few that challenge the
convention. Analysing three
music videos that were of a
similar genre and theme to
my track, which also didn’t
have a title sequence,
influenced my decision not
to use one on my own video.
Setting/location
The very first shot shows the skyline of Manchester.
The camera slowly tracks/zooms forward getting
closer to the buildings to create the effect of
entering the city.
As you can see it is similar to the ‘Use Somebody’
and ‘Standing in the dark’ videos as they are both set
during the evening we can see the New York skyline
in both. We didn’t want to challenge this convention
as we feel this type of shot establishes prime
location effectively and begins to take you on your
journey through the rest of the video.
We tried to use as little settings as possible in the video to make
travelling easier and so we could make more valuable use of the time
we had to film. Because of this, our video has 3 prime locations:
• College – on stage performances/backstage footage
• On the road/in a car travelling
• City centre
City centre
• Urban look
• Lively nightlife/bright lights reflect busy lifestyle of the
band
• Allows comparisons and develops the concept
• Manchester is home to many rock bands
On the road
• Rock videos usually feature some form of journey or behinds the scenes
footage
• Makes it more exciting for audiences and allows them to divert away from
reality – Uses and gratifications theory
• We used this convention of real music videos of this genre. Our video
allows audiences to see a day in the perspective of the band – back stage
and performing
• Exclusive feel
• We challenged the convention of bands having drivers and living a life of
luxury. In our video they tour alone and are more independent.
College – backstage footage/on stage
performances
• It is extremely common for a rock video to include live performances
• We decided it was crucial for our video therefore we have used this
convention
• All shots taken in the drama studio at college
• Use of lighting equipment makes it look more realistic
Camerawork
Rock videos usually contain a variety of shot types from extreme
close ups to long shots, with the use of handheld shots, heavy focus
on the playing of instruments as well as lip sync. These are very
important within a rock video and I have tried to use many different
ones in my music video.

Shots of lead singer
• Medium/close up/extreme close

Inspiration from Lawson's
‘Standing in the dark’ as it
has similar themes of
loneliness and longing for
someone.
Band shots
In terms of the positioning in the frame, lead singers are always in the centre and closer to the front.
Audiences will recognise the lead singer the most as rock videos tend to show vocalists more frequently
compared to any other members of the band. Bands perform relatively close together to signify their
unity. Another convention is showing male gestures of friendship e.g. laughing together, or in my video,
dancing in the car whilst on the road. My video can be likened to all of the above therefore the band
shots use and develop forms of real media products.
Wide/long/moving/medium
Here are some real examples
Editing
• Black and white
• Fast paced and slow motion
• Cross fade
• Straight cuts
• Continuity
Pace
Our video uses slow motion
like the ‘Use Somebody’
one during a shot where a
band member is sliding
towards the camera. It gives
the audience more time to
take things in
Fast motion highlights
busy life style, makes
the video look more
interesting and fits in
with the pace of the
song. It is used in a
variety of real media
products.
Black and white
• Creates a mood that colour cannot achieve
• Empathises the themes of darkness, being lonely and feeling ‘down or grey’
developing the concept
Fade
• Real media products of this genre tend to be incredibly performance based
• Shots of the band with the vocalist being the main focus
• Narratives are sometimes used showing a romance between the lead singer and a
girl/some form of current affair – they relate to the lyrical meaning of the song
• Concepts can be developed
• Our video is predominantly performance based with a slight concept behind it
• Ideology ‘anybody can get lonely sometimes’
Genre
Narrative
• Looking at narrative structure implies that we explore the the way in which the
information contained within a text is revealed to us
• Roland Barthes describes texts as “a galaxy of signifiers, not a structure of signifies;
it has no beginning; we gain access to it by several entrances, none of which can
be authoritatively declared to be the main one”
• Our video could has an unconventional narrative – it is elliptical
• A structure in which certain key pieces of information or events are omitted. It is
up to the audience to fill in the gaps
• Audiences don’t know what he could use when he sings ‘Use Somebody’ but they
are able to understand he is lonely
• This is established through the use of direct mode of address and close up shots of
the lead singer allowing audiences to share the point of view with him and
empathise with him
Introducing the characters
• Uses conventions of
the actual ‘Use
Somebody’ video
• Fade allows you to see
where he is
• Makes it look like he is
in the Hilton hotel in
Manchester
• It introduces the lead
singer for the first
time whilst
establishing the
setting
There are only males in the video. We could argue that this
challenges conventions of real media products but it also uses
them too.
Examples:
Costumes
It uses and develops conventions of this genre as the characters in my video are wearing rather
plain and casual clothing, all dark or dull in colour. For example, ripped skinny jeans, baggy t-
shirts and laced trainers highlight the bands youth and the ‘care free’ messy stereotype
associated with rock and indie music lovers. It’s almost as if bands of these genres over look their
image, they don’t use this to promote their music like mainstream artists.
Real media products
My final product
Iconography/props
• Instruments - they are a traditional rock band
consisting of guitarists, a lead vocalist and a
drummer.
• Smoking/drinking – this develops the rock music
stereotype of rebellion and allows audiences to see
they are normal people.
• Car and busy road – highlights their busy lifestyle
and how they spend a lot of their time travelling.
We pulled out some iconography and props
from existing media texts of the same genre
and used them in our own to make it a
conventional rock music video.
One thing which we noticed is that many well known
bands and singers wear sunglasses making them conform
to our stereotypical representation of ‘stars’. This is evident
in a variety of real media products.
• Challenged the convention
• Highlights the band care less about their image and more
about the music
• Creates a sense of closeness as it allows direct mode of
address
Image manipulation
• Darkness with high contrast levels – edgy tone
• Altered the brightness and levels adding shadow to his face
• Fits in with themes of loneliness and allows continuity
• We didn’t use special effects – not common in rock videos
Ancillary 1
Conventions I have used and developed
Plain disc including label logos and
information
Track listing
Barcodes
Consistency throughout both
Conventions I have challenged
No identity of the band included on the
digipack e.g. no name/image
Different sized text on list to highlight well
known tracks/singles
Same image on the front and the back
Ancillary 2
Band name
Same images from digipack
Album name
Mention of
known singles
Direct language and used of
red to empathise the
text/make it stand out

Question 1

  • 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? Daniella Johnston
  • 2. Title Here are some real media products that have title sequences for their music videos. After looking at various styles and genres, I found that this is used more frequently on genres such as RnB, dance and pop in comparison to indie and rock, although there are still a few that challenge the convention. Analysing three music videos that were of a similar genre and theme to my track, which also didn’t have a title sequence, influenced my decision not to use one on my own video.
  • 3. Setting/location The very first shot shows the skyline of Manchester. The camera slowly tracks/zooms forward getting closer to the buildings to create the effect of entering the city. As you can see it is similar to the ‘Use Somebody’ and ‘Standing in the dark’ videos as they are both set during the evening we can see the New York skyline in both. We didn’t want to challenge this convention as we feel this type of shot establishes prime location effectively and begins to take you on your journey through the rest of the video.
  • 4. We tried to use as little settings as possible in the video to make travelling easier and so we could make more valuable use of the time we had to film. Because of this, our video has 3 prime locations: • College – on stage performances/backstage footage • On the road/in a car travelling • City centre
  • 5. City centre • Urban look • Lively nightlife/bright lights reflect busy lifestyle of the band • Allows comparisons and develops the concept • Manchester is home to many rock bands
  • 6. On the road • Rock videos usually feature some form of journey or behinds the scenes footage • Makes it more exciting for audiences and allows them to divert away from reality – Uses and gratifications theory • We used this convention of real music videos of this genre. Our video allows audiences to see a day in the perspective of the band – back stage and performing • Exclusive feel • We challenged the convention of bands having drivers and living a life of luxury. In our video they tour alone and are more independent.
  • 7. College – backstage footage/on stage performances • It is extremely common for a rock video to include live performances • We decided it was crucial for our video therefore we have used this convention • All shots taken in the drama studio at college • Use of lighting equipment makes it look more realistic
  • 8. Camerawork Rock videos usually contain a variety of shot types from extreme close ups to long shots, with the use of handheld shots, heavy focus on the playing of instruments as well as lip sync. These are very important within a rock video and I have tried to use many different ones in my music video.
  • 9. Low angle/tracki ng Medium Extreme close up High angle Long Close up Still/tripod use Moving/handheld Wide Panning Zooming/establishing Over the shoulder
  • 10. Shots of lead singer • Medium/close up/extreme close up//long/still/low angle/high angle Inspiration from Lawson's ‘Standing in the dark’ as it has similar themes of loneliness and longing for someone.
  • 11. Band shots In terms of the positioning in the frame, lead singers are always in the centre and closer to the front. Audiences will recognise the lead singer the most as rock videos tend to show vocalists more frequently compared to any other members of the band. Bands perform relatively close together to signify their unity. Another convention is showing male gestures of friendship e.g. laughing together, or in my video, dancing in the car whilst on the road. My video can be likened to all of the above therefore the band shots use and develop forms of real media products. Wide/long/moving/medium Here are some real examples
  • 12. Editing • Black and white • Fast paced and slow motion • Cross fade • Straight cuts • Continuity
  • 13. Pace Our video uses slow motion like the ‘Use Somebody’ one during a shot where a band member is sliding towards the camera. It gives the audience more time to take things in Fast motion highlights busy life style, makes the video look more interesting and fits in with the pace of the song. It is used in a variety of real media products.
  • 14. Black and white • Creates a mood that colour cannot achieve • Empathises the themes of darkness, being lonely and feeling ‘down or grey’ developing the concept
  • 15. Fade
  • 16. • Real media products of this genre tend to be incredibly performance based • Shots of the band with the vocalist being the main focus • Narratives are sometimes used showing a romance between the lead singer and a girl/some form of current affair – they relate to the lyrical meaning of the song • Concepts can be developed • Our video is predominantly performance based with a slight concept behind it • Ideology ‘anybody can get lonely sometimes’ Genre
  • 17. Narrative • Looking at narrative structure implies that we explore the the way in which the information contained within a text is revealed to us • Roland Barthes describes texts as “a galaxy of signifiers, not a structure of signifies; it has no beginning; we gain access to it by several entrances, none of which can be authoritatively declared to be the main one” • Our video could has an unconventional narrative – it is elliptical • A structure in which certain key pieces of information or events are omitted. It is up to the audience to fill in the gaps • Audiences don’t know what he could use when he sings ‘Use Somebody’ but they are able to understand he is lonely • This is established through the use of direct mode of address and close up shots of the lead singer allowing audiences to share the point of view with him and empathise with him
  • 18. Introducing the characters • Uses conventions of the actual ‘Use Somebody’ video • Fade allows you to see where he is • Makes it look like he is in the Hilton hotel in Manchester • It introduces the lead singer for the first time whilst establishing the setting
  • 19. There are only males in the video. We could argue that this challenges conventions of real media products but it also uses them too. Examples:
  • 20. Costumes It uses and develops conventions of this genre as the characters in my video are wearing rather plain and casual clothing, all dark or dull in colour. For example, ripped skinny jeans, baggy t- shirts and laced trainers highlight the bands youth and the ‘care free’ messy stereotype associated with rock and indie music lovers. It’s almost as if bands of these genres over look their image, they don’t use this to promote their music like mainstream artists. Real media products My final product
  • 21. Iconography/props • Instruments - they are a traditional rock band consisting of guitarists, a lead vocalist and a drummer. • Smoking/drinking – this develops the rock music stereotype of rebellion and allows audiences to see they are normal people. • Car and busy road – highlights their busy lifestyle and how they spend a lot of their time travelling. We pulled out some iconography and props from existing media texts of the same genre and used them in our own to make it a conventional rock music video.
  • 22. One thing which we noticed is that many well known bands and singers wear sunglasses making them conform to our stereotypical representation of ‘stars’. This is evident in a variety of real media products. • Challenged the convention • Highlights the band care less about their image and more about the music • Creates a sense of closeness as it allows direct mode of address
  • 23. Image manipulation • Darkness with high contrast levels – edgy tone • Altered the brightness and levels adding shadow to his face • Fits in with themes of loneliness and allows continuity • We didn’t use special effects – not common in rock videos
  • 24. Ancillary 1 Conventions I have used and developed Plain disc including label logos and information Track listing Barcodes Consistency throughout both Conventions I have challenged No identity of the band included on the digipack e.g. no name/image Different sized text on list to highlight well known tracks/singles Same image on the front and the back
  • 25. Ancillary 2 Band name Same images from digipack Album name Mention of known singles Direct language and used of red to empathise the text/make it stand out

Editor's Notes

  1. Although we were limited to filming in Manchester, we feel it has a vibrant and urban look which could be likened to locations in other media products similar to ours. With a lively nightlife and bright lights, we feel it highlights the busy lifestyle of the band. We can make comparisons between the lead singers life and a regular persons who lives in the city, helping develop the concept that he is lonely. Manchester is also home to many successful rock bands.
  2. It was noticeable in many rock videos that we watched that they all featured some form of journey or behind the scenes footage. This makes bands look more approachable and is exciting for audiences to watch and enjoy as they are taken into the exclusive footage of what happens when they are off stage. In a sense it allows them to divert away from reality, as suggested in Blumler and Katz’s Uses and Gratifications theory, suggesting why audiences chose to watch particular media texts for other than their content. Our video allows audiences to see a day in the perspective of the band, whilst they are backstage and travelling as well as performing. Shots of the motorway show they are always on the go whilst ones of the band inside the car give the video a more exclusive feel. Usually we would see a celebrity being driven opposed to driving themselves in a video. We have challenged this convention used in real media products as one of the members of the band are driving them to each venue. They have more independence than we’d normally see in a typical music video.
  3. It is extremely common for videos of this genre to include live performances. We decided this was crucial for our video and used the drama studio at college for the shots on stage of the band performing. Lighting equipment made these look more convincing, like they were playing to an audience. Live performances are a typical convention of rock and promote the band to the audience. It keeps the focus on the music itself and the actual talents that the members of the band have.
  4. Zooming shot was the first type of shot we used – takes you into the city and you are beginning your journey through the rest of the video. You know where it is going to be set so it is also an establishing shot. Low angle used whilst band are performing represent the dominance and power of the band which can also be associated with rock music. Tracking is taking you through the city to where the lead singer is. The low angle shot here allows us to look up to hotel where he is alone. Medium shots are average – they allow a wider range to be used and show enough but not too much. Extreme close ups and close ups allow you to see the facial expressions clearer and understand how a character is feeling. Example above shows the lead singer looking down with shadow on his face, looking miserable. We can empathise with him and understand how he is feeling because we are up close to him. The other one highlights the immaturity and rebellious nature of the band linking with the rock music stereotypes. Still shots using tripod to ensure they are steady and so the camera could focus properly.
  5. The shots in our video that aren't of the city or the band together, are all of the lead singer sitting alone singing to the camera. When deciding which type of camera shots to use for these we took inspiration from lawsons music video ‘standing in the dark’ as it has similar themes of loneliness and longing for someone like ‘use somebody’. Because of this we used and developed conventions from this real music video and as you can see we have used similar shots. The example above shows a medium shot, both lead singers are sat facing the camera but showing clear emotions. The lead singer of Lawson is closing his eyes whilst the lead singer in our video is covering his face – both of these highlight they are fed up and desire change. We also used close ups, extreme close ups, long shots and shots at different angles when filming the lead singer.
  6. The editing is usually snappy and fast paced, to match the normally fast tempo of rock songs. We took this into consideration and did the same thing in our music video. We usually cut on the beat to keep the mood of the video consistent and so the shots matched with the music and lyrics. This slide lists the editing techniques we have used in our video, we feel it makes it look more professional and interesting.
  7. Pace was one of the most important parts of the editing process when putting together our music video. We altered the speed of our footage, sometimes slowing it down and sometimes speeding it up. We did this so the shots matched the pace of the music and it flowed better. Our video used slow motion like the use somebody video during a shot where a band member is sliding towards the camera. This gives the audience more time to take things in, makes it less overwhelming but him coming so up close to camera makes the video more in your face like rock music is thought to be. Fast motion highlights the busy life style of the band, we decided to speed up shots where they are travelling and on the road, just like many other real media products. The first two images you can see are taken from the killers video ‘runaways’ and ‘use somebody’ by kings of leon. Ours are very similar to these and have the same effects, therefore this is another way our video uses and develops conventions of real media products.
  8. This is used in real media products for various reasons. A common reason use is to make footage appear to be from an earlier time in history or during dream or memory sequence. We decided to use it create the effect of being in the audience watching them perform, creating a memory. Moreover, it covers up the different lighting used and allows continuity as the black and white sequence consists of shots from different days. Black and white creates a mood that colour cannot achieve. It breaks down the range of bright and fast shots so the video is not too overwhelming for the viewer but also adds to the dark tones used in the video. It empathises the theme of darkness, being lonely and feeling ‘down or grey’ developing the concept we tried to encode into the video.
  9. After watching many music videos of this genre, I realized that the most obvious convention of a rock video is that they tend to be incredibly performance based, with shots covering the whole band playing, yet focusing mainly on the front vocalist. Narrative music videos are also used, however to find a video with no shots of a band performing together would be very unlikely. Storylines typically show a romance between the lead singer and a girl or some form of current affair, relating to the meanings of the lyrics. Sometimes rock music videos also form around a concept. We wanted to incorporate all three styles of genre into our video. Due to a lack of characters to star in the video, we were unable to do this. It is this reason that there are no females in our video and there is no relationship involving the lead singer. This differs from many rock videos, as nearly all the ones we viewed had females in, therefore we could argue that it challenges this convention of real media products of this genre. Our video is predominantly performance based, showing the band performing together and playing to the camera, and the lead singer singing directly to the camera. There is a slight concept behind our video. We tried to encode the ideology that ‘anybody can get lonely sometimes’ into it. I feel the range of shots used make this clear.
  10. Most artists within Rock videos give off the impression they are living the dream, always smiling and loving what they're doing. Most narratives are the band having fun behind the scenes and enjoying their performance to audiences.
  11. We were unable to find females to be in our video and due to being lost for time we went ahead and decided to have a male dominated video, with no females in at all. This highlights the genre as rock music tends to be favored more by male audiences than female ones. We could argue having only males in the video challenges conventions of real media products as when researching we did come across many that did have females in for the narratives. However, most only had one female in so we feel like having none doesn’t make much difference. It also uses conventions of real media products too as the killers have lots of videos which only star the band.
  12. One thing which we noticed is that many well known bands and singers wear sunglasses making them conform to our stereotypical representation of ‘stars’. This is evident in a variety of real media products. We wanted to challenge this convention and therefore did not use this piece of iconography as we want to highlight that the band care more about the music than their image, and to create a sense of closeness during close ups with the lead singer as it allows him to use direct mode of address. If he wore sunglasses the audience wouldn’t be able to establish a relationship with him and empathise with his character.
  13. The hue of the rock music videos are usually quite dark, but with high contrast levels, to give the video an overall dark and edgy tone. After filming we realized that our footage of the lead singer was brighter than it should be and felt the need to alter the brightness and levels in premiere to make the overall image look darker and to add shadow to his face. This makes the video fit in with the songs themes of loneliness and allows continuity as the majority of it is set during the evening. We used no special effects as these are not common in videos of this genre and we wanted our video to conform to the typical conventions used in rock.
