Music Video Forms and Conventions
1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
There are several uses of music videos which all serve an important purpose in their own right. The main purpose
of a music video is to promote the artist/band or the song itself. Artists use music videos as promotion as it is a
key way of attracting the attention of major record labels and those alike.
Another important purpose of music videos is to entertain the audience. This can be done so through the use of
visually appealing footage.
In most promotional based music videos there is the bands name or logo within the duration of the film. I tried to
use this convention within my music video “Pay Your Way” by putting the Fat-Lion Hi-fi band logo at the start of
my media product.
I believe this is a perfect example of how I have
tried to use forms and conventions of real music
videos within my production. By using the band
logo I am giving them credit as well as a platform
to promote their music. Which is a regular
feature within music videos.
However, another common occurrence of music videos
that the production company is often presented in the
opening of the visuals. By not placing the production
company logo of 'BoomSound' within in my own music
video it could be argued that I am challenging
conventions of music videos.
2. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
Conventions of music videos – Music videos have a wide variety of conventions such as camera shots, Mise En Scene,
lighting, intertextuality and props.
In my video I followed the forms and conventions of real music videos by using a variety of different camera shots to give the
audience a better understanding of the characters within the media product.
This is a low angled close of the middle class man in my music video.
Used this opening shot as the low angle instantly demonstrates to the
audience how he is a figure of authority as the camera is literally looking
up at him. Moreover, the close up draws attention to his custom of shirt
and tie which infers his status of wealth. This shot being placed at the
beginning of the video gives the audience an insight into what this
character is representative of within society from the start.
This a slightly high angled long shot of the homeless man that I filmed for
my music video. Similarly, to the visual described above this shot was
also used to infer to the audience something about the characters
lifestyle. The fact that there is a slight high angled perspective on the shot
connotes to the audience how he is likely to be looked down upon by
others in society purely based on the fact that he is homeless. The use of
the long shot is also effective as it draws attention to how people walk
past the homeless man as if he wasn’t there.
These two examples I have picked out from my main product are a perfect
in demonstrating how I have used a variety of different camera shots and
angles to accentuate certain aspects of the characters within my music
video
3. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
Mise En Scene plays a huge part in conveying representation within music videos. Within my own music videos I am further
following forms of conventional music videos by using a wide range of Mise En Scene techniques within my visuals.
In this tracking shot of the middle class man walking down the
stairs I used the Mise En Scene technique of colour to demonstrate
the mans egotistic self-concept.
A red carpet is synonymous with wealth, power and celebrity
status. The fact that the man has a red carpet as feature in his
house demonstrates to the audience how he perceives himself self
as important and of high status.
In this mid shot there is still the running motif of the colour red
throughout the man's house - demonstrated by the red sofa.
Moreover, in this shot I also used the Mise En Scene technique
of objects to further emphasize the man's dominance and
masculinity. The man is seen to be smoking a cigar in his living
room. This use of phallic imagery is a literal metaphor for the
man's power due to attainment of wealth.
The coffee shop worker in the video is seen to be
smoking a cigarette. The homeless man in the video
isn't smoking anything. The comparison of phallic
imagery throughout the video is a microcosm
representation of how the hierarchy of wealth works
within society. The man with the most money is seen as
the most powerful and dominant from a social
perspective.
