The North Boundary is the road from Lipenja Mukete through Ikoi and Dikome

First Person Perspective in Fiction;
An Analysis of A Journal Of The Plague Year by Daniel Defoe
Characterization and point of view are two very important tools that authors use in
writing fiction. They both interoperate with one another to advance the plot and
contribute significantly to the meaning. An author s choice of point of view can
reveal the purpose, strategy or intentions that he or she aimed for as well. One such
author that wrote his fiction with evident strategy is Daniel Defoe in his work A
Journal Of The Plague Year. This story is about a man recording the events and
observations of the plague visitation, as the narrator calls it, to London during the ...
There are times where it is wiser to use third person as well. In the case of Defoe s
character however, the personalization is what makes the story distinctive and
discernable from articles, newspapers and textbooks that show the time period and
events that took place in the fictional journal. Because we can relate to the narrator,
it is easier for us to like the story. This is beneficial to Daniel Defoe because the
readers will be drawn in quicker. Also, the first personnarration makes the story less
of an historical account meant to purely inform the masses, and more of a novel
that explores the social dynamics and political framework of a city that was indeed
plagued with a deadly infection during the late 17th century. More importantly
though, it is due to first person point of view that we are introduced to the central
figure of the story, whom without would not make this fictional journal as
compelling. First and foremost, as we begin to read the text, given the fact that the
story is written in first person point of view, we have to evaluate the reliability of
the narrator. While it may be easier to relate to him, that doesn t necessarily assure
that the narrator can be a trusted character. Factors such as biases, judgments,
behaviors and personality in general contribute to the likeability and credibility of
the protagonist. If the character has a very skewed way of thinking and viewing the

New teachers struggle with balancing creativity and imposing guidelines and
materials. Mandated learning goals are the requirements set by the Department of

ways people disrespect women specifically. Firstly, grouping them together takes
away their identity as individuals and portrays them as one dumb mass, much like

another evidence of one mass versus individuals working together. The women
there are never referred to individually, and they are all assumed to think the same.
Secondly, he describes them as girls. This takes away their maturity, making them
seem ignorant and uneducated like children. There is no evidence that they are
stupid or don t understand a word of it like Dr. Breed later says. The women don t
perform the direct experiment, but no one has any way of knowing what their
reactions to it are. This is because there is no personal connection; the girls, again
referenced as one, belong to anybody with access to a Dictaphone . No specific

The story takes place in the 1960s. During this time, there was a really lot of
controversy in the United States involving war. The Vietnam War was was at its
peak. The war began in 1955 and did not end until 1975. Many of the young men
went into the war the same way that the narrator and his friends went to greasy
lake. They thought they were perceived as bad and brave. Just as the narrator and
his friends headed to greasy lake, they were unsure of what the night was going to
bring. They experienced and saw things that they were not prepared for. In a way,
the narrator s car resembles the war as well. The car belonged to his parents. He
took the car out unharmed, and in good condition. He brought it home broken and
tattered. The car resembles the boys who went off the the war. The narrator would
not have ended up in the situation he was in if he did not lose the keys to the car.
Something as insignificant as misplacing a set of keys changed his life. Just as
something insignificant started the war. Almost every person has experienced a
greasy lake at some point or another. Driving around with a car full of friends on a
Friday night is certainly not a new tradition for young people. For some kids, it can

2.1.2. Levels of awareness, perception and attitudes towards MINI
As Keller (1993, p. 3) argues, [...] perceptions about a brand as reflected by the
brand associations held in consumer memory . Keller (1998) also suggests that
there are three categories that constitute the overall brand perception: attributes;
benefits and attitudes. A study conducted by Simms and Trott (2006) explores the
brand perception of the MINI stakeholders. Based on their findings researchers
established a model that gives a perspective on a product brand by linking specific
brand associations to the image that is developed in the mind of the consumer or
stakeholder, and finally linking this to how the image appeals to key stakeholders

We see Frank trying to portray himself as reasonable: I m not an unreasonable man.
I argued However, by his decision to argue the point, we see, in fact, that it is not a
reasonable thing to do. A reasonable person does not argue they discuss or debate
on an issue. We see Frank s reaction to what is perceived as Kimberley s bad
behaviour. Our first sign of his disciplining is when he tells the reader: I only hit
her when she s naughty . That seems an incongruous statement, as you would not
normally call a teenager naughty . He seems to be taking the punishment too far

This seems a draconian thing to do. To begin with, we can still somewhat
sympathise, although we recognise that he may be pushed beyond his limits. His
next punishment begins to show how unreasonable he actually is. When he puts
Kimberley in the corner, all she does is just stood there . Frank s expression is one
of despair but the reader is beginning to wonder what else he expected her to do.
She is simply doing what he told her to do and he is finding fault with that. We are
beginning to see that Frank is not necessarily the man we originally thought he was.
His next punishment is where we really start to see him lose control. He
