2. Literature is life. It deals with people’s feelings, emotions,
experiences, and thoughts. It is divided into prose and poetry.
Generally, poets write to communicate their feelings and
thoughts about a subject. They want to capture their feelings
and experiences using beautiful language. Thus, behind the
beauty of words, readers can uncover the real treasure of the
literature which can be about history, personal experiences,
perspective about life, and others.
5. 1. Know your purpose in writing. According to Edith Sitwell, poetry unveils the
meaning which is inside the heart and mind. The goal in writing should be in
mind as you start writing poem e.g. letting the readers discover the meaning
of the poem, expressing your philosophies in life, or conveying your ideas
using beautiful language.
2. Keep away from clichés. Clichés are ideas or expressions which have been
used by many people. Examples are “Time heals all wounds”; “Read between
lines”; “Roses are red, violets are blue.” Try to form your own words as much
as possible. Enjoy playing with words while communicating the message to
the readers.
3. Use poetic devices, elements and techniques in poetry. Apply the different
imagery like gustatory, auditory, tactile, olfactory, and visual. Make use of the
figurative language like simile, metaphor, personification, and other figures of
speech. It is also very nice to hear when you incorporate rhyme, and word
sounds like onomatopoeia, assonance, consonance, and alliteration. Explore
also the use of poetic devices like rhyme, rhyme scheme, and meter.
6. 4. Choose concrete words. Since, poetry is creating pictures through the use of
words, see to it that the words are concrete for readers to create vivid mental images.
Instead of stating the emotions, employ words that can describe the abstract ideas.
Thus, it is very important to use imager and figures of speech in writing poems.
5. Communicate theme. Be sure also that the readers can comprehend the theme
that you wanted to convey in your poem. Theme does not mean the topic but the
topic plus the opinion about it. For example in the poem “How
Do I Love Thee”, the theme is love that can be expressed in different ways even unto
the next life.
6. Revise your work. Do not be discouraged of revising and revising your work. This
process is very important since you are polishing your piece. You will see that the
more you polish it, the outcome is better. Try also asking others to read your work
and ask their feedback because in this way, your work becomes improved and
interesting.
