What is Psychopathy?
 Psychopathy (noun) =mental illness or
disorder.
Definition
 defined as a personality disorder
characterized by enduring antisocial
behaviour,
diminished empathy and remorse,
and disinhibited or bold behaviour.
Fictional Psychopaths- Why are
we Drawn to Them?
The moment we begin rooting for a psychopathic antihero—or at least
hoping he doesn't fall flat on his face—can be unsettling.
History of Psychopathy
 Psychopathy, from psych (soul or mind)
and pathy (suffering or disease), was
coined by German psychiatrists in the
19th century and originally just meant
what would today be called mental
disorder, the study of which is still known
as psychopathology.
 An influential figure in shaping modern American
conceptualizations of psychopathy was American
psychiatrist Hervey Cleckley.
 In his classic monograph, The Mask of
Sanity(1941), Cleckley drew on a small series of
vivid case studies of psychiatric patients at
a Veterans Administration hospital in Georgia to
describe the disorder.
 Cleckley used the metaphor of the "mask" to refer
to the tendency of psychopaths to appear confident,
personable, and well-adjusted compared to most
psychiatric patients, while revealing underlying
pathology through their actions over time.
 Cleckley formulated sixteen criteria to describe the
disorder
Man who designed the
Checklist
 Robert D. Hare later repopularised the
construct of psychopathy in criminology
with his Psychopathy Checklist
 The Psychopathy Checklist or Hare
Psychopathy Checklist-Revised, now
the Psychopathy Checklist—revised (PCL-
R), is a psychological assessment tool used
to assess the presence of psychopathy in
individuals.
 It is a 20-item inventory of
perceivedpersonality traits and recorded
behaviors, intended to be completed on the
basis of a semi-structured interview along
with a review of 'collateral information' such
as official records.
Factor 1 Factor 2 Other items
Facet 1: Interpersonal
•Glibness/superficial charm
•Grandiose sense of self-worth
•Pathological lying
•Cunning/manipulative
Facet 2: Affective
•Lack of remorse or guilt
•Emotionally shallow
•Callous/lack of empathy
•Failure to accept
responsibility for own actions
Facet 3: Lifestyle
•Need for
stimulation/proneness to
boredom
•Parasitic lifestyle
•Lack of realistic, long-term
goals
•Impulsivity
•Irresponsibility
Facet 4: Antisocial
•Poor behavioral controls
•Early behavioral problems
•Juvenile delinquency
•Revocation of conditional
release
•Criminal versatility
•Many short-term marital
relationships
•Promiscuous sexual behavior
Psychopathy Checklist-Revised: Factors, Facets, and Items[12]
RESULTS
 . A prototypical psychopath would receive a
maximum score of 40, while someone with
absolutely no psychopathic traits or
tendencies would receive a score of zero. A
score of 30 or above qualifies a person for
a diagnosis of psychopathy.
 People with no criminal backgrounds
normally score around 5. Many non-
psychopathic criminal offenders score
around 22.
This test is here only to help you
learn about the PCL-R!
Psychopathy is a very serious
thing and true assessment should
be undertaken lightly and can
ONLY be done a trained
professional.

Psychopaths: how can you spot
one?
 We think of psychopaths as killers, alien,
outside society. But, says the scientist
who has spent his life studying them,
you could have one for a colleague, a
friend – or a spouse
Psychopathic Traits Linked to
Witnessing Abuse in Childhood
 Children who witness domestic violence may be
more likely to have psychopathic traits in adulthood,
according to a new study.
 Previous research had found a link between
experiencing abuse in childhood and a higher risk of
developing psychopathic traits. However, the new
study is the first to show that even witnessing the
abuse of one's family members in childhood is
related to psychopathic traits among adults who
have committed crimes, study co-author Michael
Koenigs, an associate professor of psychiatry at the
University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and
Public Health, said in a statement
Apparently psychopaths make
good CEOs
 A panel at SXSW takes on this very
topic, presenting the thesis that many
successful CEOs in, yes, Silicon Valley
share a lot of psychopathic traits that are
actually beneficial to running a company.
Should psychopaths be
morally bioenhanced?
What is moral
bioenhancement?
 This is biotechnologies which improve personality traits
and behaviour to make us nicer and less aggressive.
 Ethicists Ingmar Persson and Julian Savulescu were
amongst the first to discuss the ethics and feasibility of
moral bioenhancement. They argued that it will eventually
be needed so that humanity will not destroy society or the
planet.
 Elvio Baccarini and Luca Malatesti have more modest
ambitions – to keep psychopaths from making our lives
miserable. They argue that psychopaths may not realise
that they are harming others, but they do realise that other
psychopaths could harm them. Therefore, compelling
them to take drugs or neurological treatment is ethical,
relying on principles of public reason.
Female Psychopaths
 Warren et al. (2003) found female
occurrence rates of psychopathy of
approximately 17% in prison populations—
significantly lower than the rates for men in
prison (Winn et. al, 2012).
 Until we have research to inform us,
however, it does not make sense to entirely
contradict years of research which says that
more men are psychopaths than women.
Are Selfies a Sign of
Narcissism and Psychopathy?
 This study suggests that narcissists are more
likely to show off with selfies and make extra
effort to look their best in these photos.
 Interestingly, psychopathic men posted more
selfies, but didn’t tend to edit them more than
their less psychopathic counterparts.
 The study’s authors speculated that this may be
because they lack self-control and don’t really
filter what they put on Facebook—editing photos
suggests a level of careful self-presentation that
you would be unlikely to find among those high
in psychopathy.
