This article summarizes a study that aimed to improve knowledge about mental health issues among older adults in rural Kentucky. The study recruited participants through local cooperative extension services in two counties. Participants completed surveys assessing demographics, mental health awareness, and knowledge before and 3-6 months after an educational intervention. The results showed significant improvements in mental health awareness, including understanding that mental illness is not normal aging and that older adults can benefit from treatment. However, sustained knowledge about clinical communication needs further improvement. The conclusions were that such interventions can increase awareness of mental health services and determine if improved knowledge translates to better mental health.
