Introduction
Remote controls were first developed in the early
1900’s
Now remotes us IR (Infrared Remote) control
They can control multiple different thing and all at
the same time
They are not only used for entertainment but also
military, industry, and recreation
The Basics
Infrared Remote Controls developed in the
late 1970’s
Infrared Remote Controls use infrared light
and photo receptors
Uses different light frequencies for different
functions.
How they work
These remotes use invisible light beams
to send signals to electronic devices
Light is received by receptors in devices
Different frequencies do different things
Infrared Remote controls today can
control many different devices at one time
How signal is received
Light is sent out by remote control and is received
by phototransistor
If line of sight is not possible IR extenders help out
They receive signals and transmit signals to device
via radio wave
Creator/Inventor
Nikola Tesla first to use remote control on toy
boat
Phil co Mystery Control (1939) was first
wireless remote for electronic devices
First Infrared Remote controls developed in
1977-1978
History
First remotes connected with wires to devices
First wireless remote used to control a toy boat
Next moved to visible light beams and sound waves
Then Infrared Remote controls introduced
Now radio waves are more common because of
problems with pointing light beam at receptor.
Changed to Infrared Remote Control for a
couple of reasons
Problems with early remotes
Early remote controls could be ineffective
Outside sources could also change channels / volume
People wanted to be able to control more functions
Circuit Diagram
Circuit Description
The remote we use, sends a train of bits (0’s and
1’s) of some fixed length modulated with a 38
KHz infrared signal
The demodulated signal from TSOP sensor is fed to
pin no. 2 of IC PIC12F675
The decoded signal from PIC 12F675 is fed to pin
no. 10 (port 3.0) RXD (serial input port) of
AT89S52
Uses
They can control a multiple of different of
things including-
Radios
TV’S
DVD/CD players
Video Games
Toys
Military Uses
Space/NASA
TV Uses
TV’s are the most popular use of infrared
remote controls
Used for multiple functions on the TV
Also used for controlling electronics
connected to TV
Radio, DVD, CD Players
• Use same basic principles as TV remote
controllers
• Use same types of light beams to control
functions of player
• Now usually all combined into one type of
remote
Multi Use Controllers
• Used to control multiple electronic devices
• First invented in the late 1970’s
• Now the most common type of remote
Military Uses
• Used in many different applications
• Used in missile control and electric warfare
• Used in IED detonation
• New IED’s are immune to radio detonation

Industry Uses
• Used to control
– Sub stations
– Pump Storage Power Stations
– HDVC plants
Entertainment Uses
• Infrared remote controls can be used with video
games
• Makes wireless play a lot easier
• All major video game consoles now use Infrared
remote control or radio control
• Infrared Remote Control has had a big impact
on today’s world
• Has freed us from wires and has made
entertainment and industry faster and easier

  • 6. Introduction Remote controls were first developed in the early 1900’s Now remotes us IR (Infrared Remote) control They can control multiple different thing and all at the same time They are not only used for entertainment but also military, industry, and recreation
  • 7. The Basics Infrared Remote Controls developed in the late 1970’s Infrared Remote Controls use infrared light and photo receptors Uses different light frequencies for different functions.
  • 8. How they work These remotes use invisible light beams to send signals to electronic devices Light is received by receptors in devices Different frequencies do different things Infrared Remote controls today can control many different devices at one time
  • 9. How signal is received Light is sent out by remote control and is received by phototransistor If line of sight is not possible IR extenders help out They receive signals and transmit signals to device via radio wave
  • 10. Creator/Inventor Nikola Tesla first to use remote control on toy boat Phil co Mystery Control (1939) was first wireless remote for electronic devices First Infrared Remote controls developed in 1977-1978
  • 11. History First remotes connected with wires to devices First wireless remote used to control a toy boat Next moved to visible light beams and sound waves Then Infrared Remote controls introduced Now radio waves are more common because of problems with pointing light beam at receptor.
  • 12. Changed to Infrared Remote Control for a couple of reasons Problems with early remotes Early remote controls could be ineffective Outside sources could also change channels / volume People wanted to be able to control more functions

Circuit Description The remote we use, sends a train of bits (0’s and 1’s) of some fixed length modulated with a 38 KHz infrared signal The demodulated signal from TSOP sensor is fed to pin no. 2 of IC PIC12F675 The decoded signal from PIC 12F675 is fed to pin no. 10 (port 3.0) RXD (serial input port) of AT89S52
  • 15. Uses They can control a multiple of different of things including- Radios TV’S DVD/CD players Video Games Toys Military Uses Space/NASA
  • 16. TV Uses TV’s are the most popular use of infrared remote controls Used for multiple functions on the TV Also used for controlling electronics connected to TV
  • 17. Radio, DVD, CD Players • Use same basic principles as TV remote controllers • Use same types of light beams to control functions of player • Now usually all combined into one type of remote
  • 18. Multi Use Controllers • Used to control multiple electronic devices • First invented in the late 1970’s • Now the most common type of remote
  • 19. Military Uses • Used in many different applications • Used in missile control and electric warfare • Used in IED detonation • New IED’s are immune to radio detonation (Arment, 2006, sec 2 par 2-3)
  • 20. Industry Uses • Used to control – Sub stations – Pump Storage Power Stations – HDVC plants
  • 21. Entertainment Uses • Infrared remote controls can be used with video games • Makes wireless play a lot easier • All major video game consoles now use Infrared remote control or radio control
