Pyrolysis process
• Plastics, hundred thousand tons of which are thrown by people daily, are, perhaps the most
evident trace of human civilization. That is why recycling a plastic becomes significant issue.
• There are so many type of Plastic according to static about 50 % of general waste consist of
polymers more than of this polymers are represented by polyethylene, the most popular kind of
plastic.

 Splitting by method - is a thermal method
 Splitting at extreme temperature & pressure is a hydrolysis, a high quality chemical products
are obtained.
 Decomposition at high temperature & pressure
 Thermal decomposition - of substance without presence of oxygen is a Pyrolysis
 Mechanical crumbling at both low and normal temperature with washing, drying, granulating
 further use
Plastic Pyrolysis
 End-of-life plastic contain a lot of chemical bound energy.
 As a result of pyrolysis of waste plastic one obtains: high-energy gas, Pyrolysis oils and carbon black
 The ratios of the first three products depend on process conditions, mainly on temperature.
 The pyrolysis method for recycling used plastic is a technique, which heats whole or shredded
plastic in a reactor vessel containing an oxygen free atmosphere and a heat source.
 In the reactor the plastic is softened after which the rubber polymers continuously breakdown into
smaller molecules.
 These smaller molecules eventually vaporize and exit from the reactor.
 These vapors can be burned directly to produce power or condensed into an oily plastic liquid,
generally used as a fuel.
 Some molecules are too small to condense. They remain as a gas, which can be burned as fuel.
 The minerals that were part of the plastic, about 60 to 80 % by weight, are removed as a solid.
 When performed well a plastic pyrolysis process is a very clean operation and has nearly no
 emissions or waste.
 The properties of the gas, liquid and solid output are determined by the type of feedstock used
and the process conditions.
 For instance, whole plastic contain send stone and fibers . Shredded plastic have most of the
 sometimes most of the other removed.
 Batch wise Process is done by plastic pyrolysis.
 The remaining solid material often referred to as “charcoal”.

 The choice of feedstock and process (mainly operating temperature) can affect the value of
the finished products.
 Yield of pyrolysis process:
 Pyrolysis oil (Fuel oil)
 The essential product of Plastic pyrolysis process is pyrolysis oil referred as fuel oil
(60TO90 % of total quantity feed)which is used as a fuel component for heating in fire
chamber. Pyrolysis oil has flash Point between 60 to 93.3 °C.
 Purest quality of pyrolysis oil comparable to industrial diesel: selling price comparable to in-
dustrial diesel LDO( light diesel oil)
 Carbon Black
The vital product of pyrolysis plant is carbon black referred as "Charcoal" 8 to 12% of total
quantity feed. Carbon black has Industrial and commercial use.
 Hydrocarbon Gas
The smaller molecules eventually vaporize and exit from the reactor. These vapors can be
burned directly to produce power or condensed into an oily type liquid, generally used as a
fuel. Some molecules are too small to condense. They remain as a gas 15 to 22% of total
quantity feed) which can be burned as fuel.

 Basic function of pyrolysis plant is to achieve following process conditions:
 Operating temperature of Reactor is between 250 to 300 degree c.
 Duration period of pyrolysis is between 3 to 4 hours.
 Pyrolysis of plastic is done in the absence of oxygen.
 Scrubbing of pyrolysis oil, hydrocarbon gases and fuel gases to prevent pollution.

Pyrolysis oil is the end product of waste plastic and tyre pyrolysis. Pyrolysis oil is widely used as industrial fuel to
substitute furnace oil or industrial diesel.

Uses of Pyrolysis Oil  The fuel is an excellent fuel and can be used for  Diesel electrical generators  Diesel burners / stoves  Boilers  Hot air generators  Hot water generators  Diesel pumps Pyrolysis process • Plastics, hundred thousand tons of which are thrown by people daily, are, perhaps the most evident trace of human civilization. That is why recycling a plastic becomes significant issue. • There are so many type of Plastic according to static about 50 % of general waste consist of polymers more than of this polymers are represented by polyethylene, the most popular kind of plastic. • Plastic waste processing includes so many types of process like as...  Splitting by method - is a thermal method  Splitting at extreme temperature & pressure is a hydrolysis, a high quality chemical products are obtained.  Decomposition at high temperature & pressure  Thermal decomposition - of substance without presence of oxygen is a Pyrolysis  Mechanical crumbling at both low and normal temperature with washing, drying, granulating  further use Plastic Pyrolysis  End-of-life plastic contain a lot of chemical bound energy.  As a result of pyrolysis of waste plastic one obtains: high-energy gas, Pyrolysis oils and carbon black  The ratios of the first three products depend on process conditions, mainly on temperature.  The pyrolysis method for recycling used plastic is a technique, which heats whole or shredded plastic in a reactor vessel containing an oxygen free atmosphere and a heat source.  In the reactor the plastic is softened after which the rubber polymers continuously breakdown into smaller molecules.  These smaller molecules eventually vaporize and exit from the reactor.  These vapors can be burned directly to produce power or condensed into an oily plastic liquid, generally used as a fuel.  Some molecules are too small to condense. They remain as a gas, which can be burned as fuel.  The minerals that were part of the plastic, about 60 to 80 % by weight, are removed as a solid.  When performed well a plastic pyrolysis process is a very clean operation and has nearly no
  • 4.  emissions or waste.  The properties of the gas, liquid and solid output are determined by the type of feedstock used and the process conditions.  For instance, whole plastic contain send stone and fibers . Shredded plastic have most of the  sometimes most of the other removed.  Batch wise Process is done by plastic pyrolysis.  The remaining solid material often referred to as “charcoal”. Variety of polymer waste material is suitable as a raw material. Given below is the list of suitable raw materials for pyrolysis:  Waste Plastic  Electronic Plastic Scrap  Mixed Plastic (HDPE, LDPE, PE, PP, Nylon, Teflon, PS, ABS, FRP etc)  Mixed Waste Plastic from Waste Paper Mill  Multi Layered Plastic  Waste/Scrap Tyres  Rubber  Plastic or Rubber parts from Vehicles  Waste Engine Oils etc.  The choice of feedstock and process (mainly operating temperature) can affect the value of the finished products.  Yield of pyrolysis process:  Pyrolysis oil (Fuel oil)
  • 5.  The essential product of Plastic pyrolysis process is pyrolysis oil referred as fuel oil (60TO90 % of total quantity feed)which is used as a fuel component for heating in fire chamber. Pyrolysis oil has flash Point between 60 to 93.3 °C.  Purest quality of pyrolysis oil comparable to industrial diesel: selling price comparable to in- dustrial diesel LDO( light diesel oil)  Carbon Black The vital product of pyrolysis plant is carbon black referred as "Charcoal" 8 to 12% of total quantity feed. Carbon black has Industrial and commercial use.  Hydrocarbon Gas The smaller molecules eventually vaporize and exit from the reactor.
