An Overview of Project
   Based Learning

       By Melissa Winfield
What is Project Based Learning
• In Project Based Learning, students go through
an extended process of inquiry in response to a
  complex question, problem, or challenge.
Rigorous projects help students learn key
academic content and practice skills such as
  collaboration, communication & critical thinking.
• Project based learning is viewed as a model for
classroom activity that shifts away from teacher-
  centered instruction and emphasizes student-
  centered projects.
Why is PBL important?

• This model helps make learning relevant
to students by establishing connections to
life outside the classroom and by
addressing real world issues. In the
  classroom, Project Based Learning gives
  teachers an opportunity to build
relationships with students by acting as
  their coach, facilitator, and co-learner.
Characteristics of PBL
Examples of PBL
        • Constructing board
          games out of content
          curriculum is a great way
          for students to showcase
          knowledge and
          understanding of content.
           It also enables them to
          think of questions related
          to the skills and concepts
          they are learning.
        • Making models and
          diagrams is also a great
          example of project based
          learning.
Examples Contd…
     • Project based
       learning can also be
       done with everyday
       objects including
       food! Depicted to the
