Dynamic SIMs – the next phase
Dynamic SIMs offer the advantage of being able to download a
new mobile subscription in the same way that people now
download music, movies and books.
Mobile subscription digital signature ‘Profile’ is downloaded –
includes IMSI, KI, SMSC address etc
3 different kinds of dynamic SIM
1. Programmable SIM
2. SoftSIM
3. eSIM
Programmable SIM
• Physically the same as removable UICC
• An example of this is the Apple SIM
• Profile usually downloaded and subscriber owned by
Programmable SIM supplier
• May have STK applet on the card
• Profile is downloaded ‘Over The Air’ usually via binary SMS
but sometimes using USSD
• Does not require support in the handset
• Limited security – not backed by GSMA and large operators
Soft SIM
• SIM functionality implemented by software in handset
• Example is Huawei virtual SIM
• Profile usually downloaded and subscriber owned by handset
manufacturer
• Profile is downloaded usually via WiFi or mobile broadband
into handset
• User Interface is either mobile App or in the handset Settings
• Service tied to handset and often the service is offered by the
handset manufacturer not the Profile owner
• Limited security – not backed by GSMA and large operators
eSIM
• Embedded SIM ( eUICC ) chip fitted inside handset
• Example is Samsung Gear S2 watch
• Profile downloaded and subscriber owned usually by
operator
• Same security as regular removable SIM
• Only method that is backed by GSMA and large operators
• All major players are part of GSMA standardisation group
e.g. Apple, Samsung, Microsoft and all the major MNOs
• Will not have a substantial impact until either Apple or
Microsoft launch it in a handset model
• Once this happens removable SIMs will rapidly decline
Cloud9 Role
• Can provide Profiles that offer attractive rates all over the
world
• Profiles can be loaded on the Cloud9 core network
• Have Remote SIM Provisioning platform for all 3 types of
dynamic SIM
• Already shipping programmable SIMs
• Supplying Profiles to handset manfacturers
• Part of GSMA Task Force to standardise eSIM Remote SIM
Provisioning
