This document discusses values education and the concept of values. It defines value as something that gives strength, vigor, or desirability. Once internalized, values become standards that guide actions, develop attitudes, justify judgments, and allow self-comparison. The study of values is called axiology. A value must be chosen freely from alternatives, prized by being cherished publicly, and acted on repeatedly through similar experiences to truly be considered a value.

2. Introduction
 As Education managers, you must be fully
aware of what John Dewey claimed:
“Since education is not a means of living, but is
identical with the operation of living a life
which is fruitful and intently significant, the
only ultimate value which can be set up is
just the process of living itself.”

3. Definition of Value
 Value which came from the Latin root
“valere” means to be “strong and vigorous.” It
refers to a quality, which proceeds from a
high degree of physical energy. To be
“valere” is to have vigor, the power to do
specific thing which gives rise to an urgent
demand to have it or to realize it.

5. Axiology: The Study of Value
 The branch of philosophy that studies value
is called axiology. Accordingly, man’s
awareness of value happened not too long
ago.
 The end of 19th
century witnessed how man
was able to formulate value theory and
eventually added axiology in philosophy.
 This brought forth the birth of man’s
awareness of moral values

6. Notion of Value
 According to Msgr. Leonardo Z. Legaspi, OP, D.D. :
Value is that “which is or make something desirable,
attractive, worthy of approval, admiration, that which
inspires feelings, judgments or attitudes of esteem,
commendation; that which is useful in view of certain
ends”
 Although value is related to goood, it is not identical
with it.
 Good is that which is what ought to be; value,
however is that which recognized as good for man in
relation to his needs, desires and goals.

7. Three valuing processes and the
seven criteria for a value
 Choosing –
1. Freely
2. From alternatives
3. After thoughtful consequences of each
alternative

8.  Prizing –
4. Cherishing, being happy with the choice
5. Willing to affirm the choice publicly.

9.  Acting –
6. Doing something with the choice
7. Repeatedly done in some pattern of life.

10. Determining if it is a value or not
To determine whether a given thing is a value
or not, one should ask himself the following
questions:
1. Was the value chosen from a range of
alternatives that I was aware of?
2. Is the value evident in my behavior?
3. Do I act this value repeatedly in some
fashion through a variety of similar
experiences?

4. Am I happy and pleased with the choice?
5. Am I willing to state it publicly?
6. Does the value enhance and not impede the
development of my emotional and spiritual
well-being?
