Social networking services have the potential to impact learning both positively and negatively. While they allow for more engagement, collaboration, and information sharing, there are also barriers to implementation related to assessment, professional development, information literacy, and safety issues. Educators are encouraged to explore appropriate uses of social media to facilitate communication, collaboration, and lifelong learning, but also need to address potential risks.

SNS offer unprecedented opportunities for communication and collaboration--21st Century skills.

- There are hundreds of Web 2.0 sites, but how do you decide which ones are worth my time?
- It’s important to know what types of sites there are available and what they do.

- So what’s the fuss all about and why should I care?
- Twitter is free and easy. Using the “find people” option, search using key words for your areas of interest It is a cross between chat and micro-blogging It can provide support and continued learning
- Before jumping on the Twitter bandwagon professionally, try participating on a personal level
- Here you can see the number of followers for each user. On this screen, you can also click “follow” and voila! You are following other people who are interested in the St. Louis Baseball Cardinals.
- If you choose to no longer follow someone, all you do is click “remove” and you are no longer following that person. Once you are comfortable finding and following people of personal interest, you can move onto people of professional interest.
- Start your own social network or join an established one.
- Here you can see the first two social networks focusing on boxers. You can see the number of members each network has and links to join each.
- Classroom 2.0 is the largest Ning for educators, but there are many more.
