What is your mission? NEASC Model Schools Showcase October 12, 2011
Massachusetts Board ofElementary and Secondary Education Mission Statement If we continue to block sites like Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter what parts of this need to be modified? The mission of the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education is to strengthen the Commonwealths public education system so that every student is prepared to succeed in postsecondary education, compete in the global economy, and understand the rights and responsibilities of American citizens, and in so doing, to close all proficiency gaps.
Some questions for you• Why is it important for students to use social media to “connect”?• What impact will it have on their school?• What impact will it have on their futures?• What impact will it have on all of our futures?
If we truly believed these mission statements we would... • show students how to edit their privacy settings and use groups in Facebook instead of banning online social networks because they’re ‘dangerous’ and/or ‘frivolous’ • teach students to understand and contribute to the online information commons rather than ‘just saying no’ to Wikipedia • put a robust digital learning device into every student’s hands (or let them bring and use their own) instead of pretending that we live in a pencil notebook paper and ring binder worldClick here for the complete list from Scott McLeod’s Big Think Blog
Why do we need to embrace Social Media? "Students in the 21st century should have experience with and develop skills around technological tools used in the classroom and the world around them. Through this they will learn about technology and learn through technology. In addition, they must be able to select the most appropriate tools to address particular needs." From NCTEs Framework for 21st Century Curriculum and Assessment 2007
Why do we need to embrace Social Media? “Just as media and technology are integrated in school and life in the twenty-first century, skills related to media use (both critical analysis and production of media) are integrated throughout the standards.." (From Common Core State Standards) 2011
Why do we need to embrace Social Media? “To promote student learning through the use of mobile learning devices and social media in instruction that further prepares students to be active, constructive participants in the highly connected world in which they already live and will soon work.." (From NASSP Position Statement on Using Mobile and Social Technologies in school) 2011
