The Beat Generation Subculture Essay
The Beat Generation Subculture
Every generation has its middle class, majority, and norm, which are decided by that era s standards of
behavior and thought. Similarly, each generation has a group that rejects these standards and rebels
against the norm. In the 1950 s a group of American writers that exemplified this behavior formed.
They were called the beat generation. The beat generation was particularly remarkable because
although it was began by an exceptionally small group of people, its cultural influence was enormous.
The beats rebelled against things like conformity and consumerism in the post World War II society.
Their writing challenged both traditional American values and contemporary writing styles.

Many writers in the group later renounced the term when they felt it lost its meaning. It took the beats
a long time before they gained fame however. Jack Kerouac s novel, On the Road, went through many
different publishers before anyone agreed to print it. When it did come out it was heavily criticized by
the press. In the 1950 s the lifestyle that On the Road explored was considered deviant. The stereotype
that emerged in the mass media was a spaced out beatnik, dressed in black, pounding on bongo drums
and muttering gibberish as poetry (Microsoft Encarta, 2001). America s youth, however, identified
with the feelings of despair and the need for freedom expressed in their work. The beats created a
revolution that began with many young people leaving their conventional lives to hitchhike around
American and find themselves. Like most subcultures, the Beat Generation rebelled against the social
and cultural norms of their time. For them it was the post World War II society that they rejected.
Cultural historians point out that acquisition of consumer goods, which had been scarce during
wartime, became a central feature of postwar life, driven by the mass media, advertising, and generous
loan terms (Encarta, 2001). The

Marfan Syndrome Research Paper
In the lab, we looked in the microscope at many different types of tissues such as epithelial,
connective, and muscle. Within connective tissues, there are many tissue disorders that can affect your
muscles, joints, or skin also your organs and organ systems. One connective tissue disease that I found
was Marfan syndrome. Marfan syndrome is an inherited disorder that affects the connective tissue.
Marfan syndrome affects about 1 in every 5000 people. People that have marfan syndrome usually
have trouble with their eyes, heart, skeleton, and blood vessels. They are also known to have very long
and unproportioned arms and legs and long spider like fingers and toes. They can also have crowded
teeth, sunken or bulging chest, flat feet, scoliosis, and many other different problems. These are just

The main issue is the aorta which is the main artery can increasingly enlarge and lead to a dissection
which is when the aorta erupts and that can lead to death. About forty percent of people with marfan
syndrome that have an aorta that erupts will die immediately. Even if you have surgery after the aorta
dissects there is a ten to twenty percent chance you could die. Most people with this disorder should
check that their aorta is not rapidly or increasingly growing. The normal size for an aorta is about an
inch, if it gets bigger than 4.7 centimeters, then it would be a good idea to get surgery. Luckily, most
people that have to have a non emergency surgery have a 98% or greater chance of success. There are
usually two types of surgery they can do to replace the aorta. The first one is the traditional method
which is where they replace the aorta and put in graft and replace the aorta valve with a mechanical
valve or the valve sparing method where the replace the aorta with a tube graft and re implant the
original valve. Surgery is very necessary for people with enlarged

Black Feminist
According to Oxford English Dictionary, Black Feminist can be defined as a movement consisting of
African American women advocating social, political, legal, and economic rights for women equal to
those of men (Oxford English Press). Black feminism argues that sexism, social class oppression, and
racism are inseparably bound together (Collins). The feminist movement has been around since the
1880s when the word Feminism appeared in the French language (Collins). The word found traction
in Britain in the 1890s, and the United States in 1910, feminism sought to influence popular culture by
its very presence and by its persistent demands to be recognized as the official voice of all women (
What is Feminism ). Although the Black feminist ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These explanations analyze factors such as fear of dividing the minority community, lack of
knowledge of feminism, the focus on male liberation in the black social movement in the 60 s, and the
idea of matriarchy (Simons). Overall, black feminist, on the other hand, believe that racism, the major
factor, hinders the development of feminist awareness among minority women and other problems
that seem to arise within the feminist movement and community (Simons). To conclude, Black
feminist are constantly striving to overcome sexism, class oppression, and racism. They have also
argued that black women are positioned within structures of power in fundamentally different ways
than white women (Collins). Black feminist organizations had to overcome three different challenges
that no other feminist organization had to face. The first challenge these women faced was to prove to
other black women that feminism was not only for white women (Burns). They also had to demand
that white women share power with them and affirm diversity, and fight the misogynist tendencies of
Black organizations (Burns). Black feminism argues that sexism, class oppression, and racism are
inextricably bound together (Collins). All three aspects are related to one another through
intersectionality, which is the study of intersections between different disqualified groups or groups of
minorities; specifically, the study of the

Legal Relations Of The Copyright Act
Glynn claims that he is joint owner of the copyright to RUST under the Copyright Act and seeks a
declaratory judgment under the Declaratory Judgment Act. Facepunch argues that Glynn has pled that
claim with insufficient particularity. Facepunch also argues that the first contract between Facepunch
and Glynn shows that Facepunch did not intend for Glynn to have any ownership interest in RUST.
Under the Declaratory Judgment Act, the court may declare the rights and other legal relations of any
interested party seeking such declaration. Federal district courts are well situated to hear disputes
where a plaintiff seeks a declaration of copyright ownership pursuant to the Copyright Act. Section
101 of the Copyright Act defines a joint ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Where parties have meaningfully collaborated on a work, it is hard to imagine that such work is
unaccompanied by the requisite intent. Facepunch argues that it never intended to enter into joint
ownership with Glynn. Both sides agree, however, that Glynn was an independent contractor for
Facepunch and never signed any documents altering his copyright interest in any game he produced.
Moreover, Glynn alleges that he wrote roughly 75% of RUST s code, making him the dominant
author. Glynn s complaint sufficiently alleges that he performed a substantial amount of work on
RUST and worked closely with other collaborators at Facepunch to create a finished product. Glynn s
contract with Facepunch establishes his monthly stipend, but does not affect his rights as an
independent contractor to joint authorship in his work and derivative works. The court will not dismiss
Glynn s claim for declaratory judgment. Glynn argues that Facepunch interfered with his contract or
economic advantage by abandoning RUST and replacing it with Facepunch s failed experimental
game. Glynn s allegations for tortious interference relate to entirely to RUST and have nothing to do
with the contract between Facepunch and Glynn. As a result, dismissal of Glynn s interference claim
as it relates to Glynn s

Religious Opponents Of Evolution
Religious opponents of evolution began cloaking religious beliefs in scientific sounding language and
then mandating that schools teach the resulting creation science or scientific creationism as an
alternative to evolution. (P. 21) For these religious opponents of evolution, trying to argue by using
language as a mask for their religious beliefs is a smart tactic to try. However, religion often has no
science to it. This leads to the question of why are these religious opponents trying to create arguments
to mask their religious beliefs in scientific language and why are they so threatened by the teaching of
evolution. Evolution teaches that organisms gained their functioning and complexity through a process
of steps to get there. Most

Russian Famine Research Paper
Famine is something that Russia could be said to be very familiar with. Some of the greatest tragedies
Russia experienced under Soviet rule were the famines that occurred in 1921, 1932, and 1947. The
scope of the devastation is still unparalleled within the country s borders and around the globe. While
the damage and hardship endured during these trying times is uncontested, their specific causes are
still held in contention.
The first famine resulted as an economic disturbance caused by the tail ends of World War I, the 1917
Revolution, and the Soviet Civil War. Infrastructure, specifically the railroads were in a state of
disrepair and were incredibly unreliable, resulting in problems involving the transportation of food
supplies across the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If this were truly the case then there would have been more than enough to feed every peasant even if
the grain was distributed poorly. This suggests that the official figures are not to be trusted and have
likely been exaggerated. It is possible that the statistics recorded were manufactured before the actual
harvest as projections for the oncoming season or biological yields. Famine was widespread
throughout the country, hitting the urban areas and countryside extremely hard. The estimates of the
harvest must have been extremely exaggerated because the death toll was skyrocketing and many of
the typically favored peoples (the industrial workers and city dwellers) were dying from starvation
also. However, just because starvation and disease was rampant does not mean that everyone suffered
equally. The death toll in the Ukraine in particular was abnormally high. Some of this can be blamed
on the still harsh requisitions taken from the Ukrainian peasants. One of the major differing points in
the treatment between the Ukrainian peasants and other Russian citizens involved emigration. The
desperate living conditions brought peasants to the cities and urban workers to the countryside all in
search of food and a more stable life. For the first time since the tsar was in power internal passports
were given to Russian citizens. They were able to relocate to find better prospects for themselves

Saint Teresa Of Avila Research Paper
Saint Teresa of Avila was born on March 28th, 1515 in Avila, Spain. She is the patron saint of Spain.
She is the third daughter of a large upper class family and she has twelve siblings. Her nationality is
spanish. When she was only thirteen she was put in a convent school after her mother had died in
1521. Saint Teresa of Avila was not a very educated person. When she was a child she grew deathly ill
and fell into a coma that was mistaken for death. Wax was put over eyes to keep them closed. Just
before she was about to be buried she woke up. Many people asked her what death felt like. She saw
in a vision a clear crystal castle that contained a large number of rooms or mansions. The first rooms
or mansions contained people who have been given up the sins of the world. The second mansions
contained believers that are led to seek the company of the good and to receive the sacraments often
and to pray with much warmth and light. In the third mansions or rooms we will find highly virtuous
people who are still not totally surrendered to god. In The Interior Castle she, compares contemplative

Cross helped her create and found small religious houses throughout Spain. She joined the Carmelite

the Carmelite Convent of the Incarnation she contracted an illness, probably of physiological origin.
Around the age of forty she received her second conversion in which she then turned toward the
practice of intense contemplation. Despite her ill health, Saint Teresa began to energetically circulate
the reform to other parts of Spain. Saint Teresa of Avila died in 1582, after an illness that lasted for

Apush Chapter 23 Summary
Chapter 23 The Bloody Shirt Elects Grant The Republicans nominated General Grant for the
presidency in 1868. The Republican Party supported the continuation of the Reconstruction of the
South, while Grant stood on the platform of just having peace. The Democrats nominated Horatio
Seymour. Grant won the election of 1868. The Era of Good Stealings Jim Fisk and Jay Gould devised
a plot to drastically raise the price of the gold market in 1869. On Black Friday, September 24, 1869,
the two bought a large amount of gold, planning to sell it for a profit. In order to lower the high price
of gold, the Treasury was forced to sell gold from its reserves. Boss Tweed employed bribery, graft,

They also opposed the government imposing a single moral standard on the entire society. Democrats
were found in the South and in the northern industrial cities. A Stalwart faction led by Roscoe
Conkling supported the system of swapping civil servant jobs for votes. (Giving someone a job if they
vote for a specific party/cause. Spoils system ) Opposed to the Stalwarts were the Half Breeds, led by
James G. Blaine. The main disagreement between the two groups was over who would give the jobs to
the people who voted in their favor. The Hayes Tilden Standoff, 1876 Congress passed a resolution
that reminded the country, and Grant, of the two term tradition for presidency after Grant was
speculating about running for a 3rd term. The Republicans chose Rutherford B. Hayes as their
presidential candidate for the election of 1876. The Democrats chose Samuel J. Tilden. In the election,
Tilden won the popular vote, but was 1 vote shy from winning in the Electoral College. The
determining electoral votes would come from three states, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Florida who
had each sent two sets of ballots to Congress, one with the Democrats victorious and the other with the
Republicans victorious; there was no winner in these states. It was necessary to find the true political
party winner of the states, although it was unknown who would judge the winner of the states because

Essay on The Perfect Teacher and Educated Man
When we were posed with the question What does an Educated Person look like? I was at a loss. But
as I went through my notes I realized how many phenomenal philosophers have played a part in
developing the basis for education in this country. I realized also that I could not answer the question
stated above with a singular philosopher s name. However, I do agree with definite points of
individual philosophers and have decided to create my own portrait of what an educated man (or
woman) would look like.
I start with the heart of Horace Mann because his heart was in the right place. He believed that
everyone should be enrolled in school. Mann thought that the common school experience was
something all students should be involved ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What student can learn to the best of their potential when they are not seen as a person but as a future
person?
Mary Wallstonecraft s elbows are the next ingredients. She believed that male and female students
should be educated together in order to literally learn about each other and respect each other s
differences. She preached that there should be a focus on the family and learning near your home.
Along with Wallstonecraft is Catherine Beecher. Beecher advocated for the rights of women in the
field of education. She enforced the idea of exercise and its health benefits, especially for women, at a
time when the idea was considered taboo. Beecher had a hand in the advancement of female colleges
and although she did not believe in equal education for men and woman she did act as a catalyst for
the beginnings of female education.
Soon the feet of Rousseau must be added to my educated person. Rousseau adhered to the idea that
students should be allowed to grow on their own and form their own identities. Also, he did not
believe in the physical punishment of students. He believed in the natural state of things and the
freedom of man, which is necessary to instill truly free learning in students.
Emerson s mind is next. Emerson pushed for fullness and awe in every possible avenue life offers you.
He accepted women into his intellectual circle and he accepted them as equals. He stated that people

Lean And Six Sigma Origins Of Statistical Tools Essay
Lean and Six Sigma, both are different words or we can say two powerful methodology which
changed the view of the manufacturer to the customer. Lean Six Sigma pleased customer with
manufacturers over the years by its implementation of various industries. Today, almost all industries
have adapted Lean Six Sigma methodology to make standard quality products. I personally feel proud
and fortune as I am able to consume quality products at present because of hard work of my past
generation s Quality engineers, mathematics and statisticians. In the remembrance of these great
minds I would like to discuss about origins of Lean Six Sigma origins of statistical tools.
Statistics word came Latin status or state. Statistics firstly used by Romans to count or survey of a
population including various details of individuals so they could impose ore tax. John Graunt (1620
1674) first proposed statistical and census method in his Natural and political observations made upon
the bills of Morality. His goal to analyze death records in London during bubonic plague. (1665 1666).
After John Graunt, many other mathematicians made contribution to the statistical studies, such as
Johanm Gauss introduced normal distribution, Kal person developed standard deviation, correlation

The Importance Of Greed In Macbeth
Oftentimes, to further their lifestyles, people hide behind a fictitious version of themselves.
Eventually, one finds their mind twisting and turning, detracted and dismembered, unable to bear the
gravity and distress of their conflicting personas. Take, for example, the character Macbeth in the play
Macbeth, who to remand power reveals his true unstable persona while continuing to maintain a
virtuous one to the public which results in a tyrannical dominance of his instability. Because of
Macbeth s actions, Scotland is thrown into chaos when his unstable personality completely dominates
him and leads to his demise at the hands of rebels affected by his greedy and indecent actions. In the
play Macbeth, Shakespeare uses light and darkness imagery to convey how Macbeth s ambition and
greed led to corruption, signifying the negative societal effects tyrants have because of their greed and
ambition. Shakespeare uses light imagery to reveal Macbeth s immoral personality which resulted
from greed. Before Banquo was murdered, Macbeth laments to Lady Macbeth, Light thickens, and the
crow makes wing to the rooky wood: Good things of day begin to droop and drowse, whiles night s
black agents to their preys do rouse (III.ii. l50 53). Macbeth explains that eventually anything good
will fall away and anything made of evil will rise and take control of the world. Shakespeare uses
metaphorical imagery to make Macbeth admit how mentally mutilated he became by his ambition to
remain in power by symbolizing him and Lady Macbeth as night s agents or evil beings and Banquo
as good . Macbeth s immoral behavior indicates the desire and want for power as a sovereign and what
limits he would go to just to ensure his vision, resulting in disfigurement of his kingdom. Furthermore,
when Macbeth is debating whether it is alright for him to murder King Duncan, Macbeth notes, Stars,
hide your fires, /Set not light see my black and deep desires;/ The eye wink at the hand; yet let that be/
which the eye fears, when it is done, to see (I.iv.51 53). Through his words, Macbeth directly admits
that he has an immoral side to him and that he wants it to remain concealed to people while he
portrays his virtuous persona. Shakespeare

What Are The Unique Chemical Properties Of Water
Water is one of the essential components that are a prerequisite in supporting life. It can be described
as an odorless, tasteless and transparent liquid that occur naturally. Water is colorless when it is in
small amount, but adopts a bluish color when it is in large quantities. As a natural compound, water is
the most abundant and familiar liquid that exist on earth. In its natural solid (ice) and liquid form,
water is estimated to cover over 70% of the entire surface of the universe (Sikorski, 2006).
Biologically, water constitutes a huge proportion of all the living tissues in a human body. Specifically,
water comprises approximately 92% of the blood plasma, an estimate of 80% of the muscle tissues,
and over 61% of the body s red blood cells (Ratner et al., 2012). Also, water constitutes of over a half
of the majority of other tissues in the human body. Since water appears to be so ubiquitous, people
tend to be unaware of the unique properties that make water an essential compound. It is the unique
physical and chemical properties of water that are unavailable in other natural compounds that give it
indisputable importance in supporting the lives and survival of all living organisms on earth. Unique
chemical properties of water and their significance to living organisms One of the distinct chemical
properties of water that make it essential in supporting life in the universe lies in the chemical
structure. Specifically, water has a simple structure that is comprised of

Neural Computational And Neural Computation
Attempting to understand the mind and its processes can be a challenging concept to try and grasp.
Over the years there have been many different interpretations of how we understand the world around
us through information and processing in the mind and brain. Argumentatively, there are a few
approaches to neural computational and neural information processing to the mind and brain, such as
through biophysical and algorithmic neural computation. While, the transition from biophysical neural
computational processing to algorithmic neural computational processing have different processes
they are both an important aspect in understanding the process from information gathered from the
world to neural computation in the mind and brain.
The biophysical aspect of neural computation is a complicated piece that is still being researched and
uncovered today. However, at a rudimentary level information processing is where biophysical neural
computation begins. Information processing is a type of processing that occurs within the brain so that
natural information, or causal correlation, can be processed into neural summation, which eventually
leads to neural computation. When we perceive something in the world we make biophysical
connections within our brain so that we can comprehend what we see or hear in the world. During this
biophysical neural computation, information processing goes through the process of neural
summation, which is a method of signal transduction. During this

The Wolf In Quentin Tarantino s Pulp Fiction
Just because you are a character doesn t mean that you have character. This was said by The Wolf in
Quentin Tarantino s movie Pulp Fiction. Tarantino opens our minds to a word with no ordinary days
and especially no ordinary people. And that s just what this movie isn t, ordinary. There are so many
twist and turns, with storylines out of order and violence mixed in with everyday conversations. It s a
movie that can get you confused and grossed out but also excited and thrilled. It s so casually not
casual and as a viewer I have such mixed feelings on it. Pulp Fiction tells you not only one story but

Tarantino develops an array of crooks and gangsters who work in a business of money and drugs. He
makes them indulge in little conversations to express their perspectives on life and what exactly goes
through the minds of these so called ¨bad¨ men. Hitmen Jules Winnfield and Vincent Vega (played by
Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta) do some pretty terrible things but still manage to have
conversations that normal people have on a daily basis. For example they were driving to kill a bunch
of boys for screwing over their boss and on the way there all the talked about was what European
countries call their hamburgers at McDonalds. I found this very comical because they are literally
driving to an apartment to hunt down these men and that is what is on there mind. Even right before
they walk in they talk about the deeper meaning behind giving a foot massage. They are so nonchalant
about everything they do and I almost admire that. Of course what they are doing is wrong but the
way they make light of the situation infers the fact of their perspective on life. People don t need to be
serious and stern all the time and Vincent and Jules prove that. That s how the movie kept me
entertained because I could relate to the characters. There weren t just hit men with no interior but
men who could be normal. I also really enjoyed the character Mia Wallace (played by Uma Thurman).
Although she was addicted to drugs she gave the audience an inside to her mind and what she thought
of. Like in the movie she talked about how if two people were so comfortable with one another then
they can sit in silence and it wouldn t be weird. She quotes ¨That s when you know you ve found
somebody really special, when you can just shut the f*** up for a minute and comfortably share a
silence.¨ I find that to be very true. If you truly are comfortable then not talking should just be normal.

Discussion Group Discussion Questions
1. a) The class is in a productive zone when every individual is contributing to the discussion.
Prevalent silence is a sign that we aren t being productive, but the discussion must also be meaningful
rather than just filling the silence. For me personally, I need to make sure to pick the times when my
input is most insightful to speak up, as well as trying to reach out to the people who are quiet. My
level of heat started out too high and went down to a manageable amount where I don t feel nearly as
afraid to contribute. The class as a whole tends a little on the cold side, and that seems mostly due to
fear of heat. It s not that people don t want to contribute, it s that they re afraid of saying something
stupid or meaningless.

Jeff says he doesn t want to edit the paper, but he accepts anyways. Annie believes she can prove that

Interpretations: Jeff just wants the editor position so he can have an office. Annie thinks the school s

interesting story for the paper. The study group is conflicted about adding new people. The study

3. What has surprised you about the group dynamic in the class?
There has been a lot of genuine support for other peoples ideas and also the conversation we all had

that we re all civil, but I feel like people actually care more than I would have expected. 4. At first I

Get Rid Of A Bug Research Paper
Since aphids do not have much of a shell or armor to protect them, you can get rid of or slow this pest
down in some natural ways.
1. Squish them. This is a very time consuming method of getting rid of these insects. If you decide to
go this route, be sure to wear rubber gloves, or the juice from the bug may irritate your skin.
2. Hit the bugs with the hose. Spraying your plants with water will dislodge the critters and they will
not return to the same plant. There are hose attachments, like the bug blaster, that you can buy that is
used for this specific purpose.
3. Get rid of colonies. Colonies of aphids can be snipped off. If you find aphids in groups or colonies,
snip off the part of the plant that contain the colonies and kill the bugs. This will not get rid of all the
bugs, will it will help to lessen the additional breeding. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Use only slow release fertilizers. These insects love overly fertilized trees and plants, thus, a slow
release type of fertilizer on your plants will help keep aphids at bay. In addition, it is wise to put a
covering over your plants until they are large enough to withstand the aphids and other insects.
5. Get rid of ants. Ants will keep aphids alive, because aphids secrete honeydew or sugary sap, which
benefits the ant. The mutualistic relationship between ants and aphids is so strong that you may see
ants carrying aphids to other less populated plants. If you see ants running up and down the shoots of
your plants it s time to check to see if you have aphids in your garden. Not only will you need to get
rid of the aphids but also the ants.
6. Plant flowers. Plant marigolds, mums, asters, dahlias, and zinnias in your garden. Why? These
plants will attract insects that will prey on aphids. Their natural predators include ladybugs, parasitic
wasps, and

Melvin B. Tolson s The Great Debates
The Great Debates is a drama that was released in the year 2007, it is based on a real life story of an
African American man named, Melvin B. Tolson. Academy Award winning actor Denzel Washington
plays Melvin B. Tolson in the movie. Melvin B. Tolson was a professor at Wiley College Texas. In the
year 1935, Mr. Melvin B. Tolson, motivates the students to join their school s first debate team. The
team made it all the way up to compete with Harvard in the national championship, furthermore,
Harvard was known as the best. The debate team was a team of four students, three boys and one girl.
However, in this true life movie actor Denzel Washington engaged in numerous good communication
ethics in more than one scene (Washington, Black, Forte, Roth, ... Show more content on

He continued to tell them that his father was one of the meanest and the most restless slave in that
time. He sternly told them that his father was strip of his clothes with each leg tied to two horse facing
opposite direction. His father was then set on fire, while each horse was whipped, causing him to
ripped apart. Basically he was telling them the slave masters take their minds but kept their bodies.
Therefore, they should keep their minds, especially being young and on the debate team (Washington,
Black, Forte, Roth, Winfrey, Eisele Porro, 2008). Denzel Washington was graphic and serious while
he was telling the students about his father. However, I believe he had thought them a good lesson in
the dialogue. I believe the moral of the dialogue is to keep your mind regardless of what may
happened in your life. Because if someone control your mind they basically control your life, for
example, the slaves. Nevertheless, Denzel Washington used intercultural communication ethics which
I think was good.
However, in another scene, Denzel Washington employs Public discourse ethics. Public discourse
ethics protects and promotes a place of conversation for diversity of ideas and persons (Arnett, Fritz,
Janie Bell, 2008). Moreover, Denzel Washington was in a secret and private barn with approximately
fifty five other men, they were African Americans, Hispanics as well as Caucasian. They seem to be
discussing issues that they were facing with the farm bosses, therefore they were trying to get
organized and have a plan so to make things right for them (Washington, Black, Forte, Roth, Winfrey,

Integrity in Characters of Different Literary Works
Integrity
Integrity is the basing of one s actions on an internally consistent framework of principles. Meaning,
one who has integrity bases their actions on a moral code of honor, character, strength, and courage.
These principles guide a character s motive and cause, putting public image aside to lead a life
chivalry and conviction. One example this is Willie Bodega of Bodega Dreams by Ernesto Quiñonez.
Although Willie s means are shady, he strives for the betterment of Spanish Harlem through the
improvement of abandoned and damaged apartments. Next, there is John Proctor of The Crucible by
Arthur Miller. Proctor refuses to provide a false confession is a true religious and personal stand. By
refusing to give up his personal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This action shows integrity because Willie took a complete outsider of his business, and guides him in
the way of running an empire. Next, there is John Proctor, an honorable man of the colony of Salem,
Massachusetts. Proctor becomes tied up with the literal and figurative witch hunt in Salem, his wife is
being accused by his secret lover Abigail Williams. The only way to have his wife escape a hanging is
to admit that had relations with Abigail to the court. His great pride and fear of public view forced him
to keep his adultery from the court. However, Proctor becomes more concerned with his individual
integrity than his public status. Proctor still wants to cleanse his name, but for religious and personal
reasons. Proctor s refusal to supply a false confession is a true personal and religious stand.
Confessing would dishonor his fellow prisoners, who are brave enough to hang at the gallows as
statement of truth. More importantly, a false admission would also dishonor him, tainting not just his
public standing, but also his soul and integrity. By refusing to forfeit his own integrity Proctor
implicitly proclaims his conviction that such integrity will bring him to heaven. He is martyred, being
redeemed for his earlier sins. Lastly, there is Holden Caulfield who epitomizes the complete opposite
of integrity. Holden glorifies his deceptions and lies he gets away with. He prides himself on how
people fall for his dishonesty. This in and of

Diction And Images In Bullhead By Leigh Allison Wilson
Love and the memory could be last forever, but sometimes it is not good to hold on to the past. In the
story Bullhead , Leigh Allison Wilson uses diction and images to portray the theme of holding to the
past could hurt the present. The story is told from the perspective of the daughter which is the narrator.
By using diction and images, Wilson portrays the mother s careless to her family and deeply holding
on to the past. The narrator describes the story as simple , perhaps because the mother tells it much
time to the daughter even though she already has a family of her own (Wilson 1). The mother seems
careless about her daughter where she looks right through her as though the daughter hadn t been born

This report provides in depth look into Wiggo current business strategy and Indonesian grocery retail
market condition in order to assess the feasibility and provide strategic marketing plan for Wiggo to
enter Indonesian market.
Key to this plan is the opportunity of business in Indonesia as an emerging market and top 10 most
attractive destinations for FDI in UNCTAD s World Investment Prospects Survey in 2010. Macro and
micro economic analysis uncovered that
Indonesia is an attractive market for Wiggo s business expansion though attention should be paid to
infrastructure support, widespread corruption and social stability issue.
Like most Asian countries, Indonesian grocery retail market is far from saturation. There are much
scope for modern format retailers to increase penetration in suburban area and second tier cities.
Competition would be expected in
Wiggo s business segment which is medium supermarket size with the massive local retailer s
expansion. This retail sector will achieve double substantial growth with expected amount of
US$70.73 billion in 2015.
To create and increase brand awareness, make product affordable and appealing for Indonesian market
to capture 1% of market share in 5 years, the following marketing mix is suggested:
1. Product: Localization of products, imitating local supermarket in product selection and store
display, providing fresh food and

Washington Irving, American Story Teller Essay
Washington Irving, American Story Teller I strongly agree with the statement Washington Irving
found in legend and folklore a view of the natural world colored by emotion, by superstition, and by
the ancient belief that supernatural beings inhabit the wild places of the earth. He wrote stories that
illustrated old truths about human nature and the dramatic possibilities of the American landscape.
Although Irving wrote over twenty volumes, including essays, poems, histories, biographies, and
more, in class, we have focused on his fiction. Irving dispersed many beliefs and legends of his time,
and the past, into his stories. He also made great use of American themes in these literary pursuits.
Such details along with existent people and events interlaced in his imaginary tales are some of the
reasons I find his work so distinctive and enjoyable. Washington Irving was the youngest of eleven
children, born into a somewhat wealthy New York City merchant family in 1783. In his twenties, he
wrote for newspapers, journals, and magazines. Shortly afterward, he worked in publishing and
editing. As the first American belletrist, Erving found great enjoyment in writing. His first notable
book, (which he heralded the release of with a fanciful precursor,) was A History of New York (1809).
It was published under one of his many clever pseudonyms, (faux historian), Diedrich Knickerbocker.
When Irving was thirty six years old, the simultaneous publications of The

Margaret Atwood s Penelopiad
Humanist and feminist, Margaret Atwood retells the famous myth, The Odyssey, in Penelopiad.
Atwood creates voices for the women who did not have an important role in Homer s epic poems. The
writer also creates two levels of myths: the Homeric myth of faithful Penelope and cultural myths
about women as either submissive and domestic, or as duplicitous schemers (9 Homwells). In
Penelopiad, Penelope retells the story in her point of view and although she is the main narrator, the
twelve maids often interject their side of the story. Throughout the work Penelope creates herself as
the victim of society and is found, often times, contradicting herself.
As the novel unravels the reader finds that Penelope is not a reliable source since most ... Show more

... The more thickly they laid it on, the more costly were the gifts they expected from me. I always
complied. Even an obvious fabrication is some comfort when you have few others (Atwood 49).
Atwood shows how narratives may be altered or constructed differently depending on the audience.
While, Penelope s payment for the altered stories shows her desire to only believe the best about
Odysseus. However, the maids create Odysseus s character to be more scandalous and the complete
opposite, when compared to Penelope. Their narrative suggests that he doesn t seem to be bolting back
to Ithaca. Demonstrating, there is an alternative version of the story, where Odysseus is less admirable
and irresponsible. Also, through the maids, Atwood is able to depict women being submissive to men,
in a more rasping point of view. In particular, when Telemachus is born the maids state, We were his
pets and his toy things, mock sisters, his tiny companions. ... He saw us as rightfully his, for whatever
purpose (Atwood 42). Atwood shows that at a very early age women were domesticated and taught to
be submissive. As for the maids, they are telling the reader that they had no other choice but to obey in
order to

Compare And Contrast St. Peter s Basilica And La Sagrada...
St. Peter s Basilica and La Sagrada Familia are structures with amazing architecture, but they are
much more than just a structure. Both basilicas tell a story about not just the architects and their
interests of certain architectural styles, but also about the history and story of Catholicism. La Sagrada
Familia and St. Peter s Basilica are not often compared due to the time in which they were built, as
well as due to their different styles of art and architecture. However, despite their very different styles
of architecture, they both serve Catholicism a similar purpose by uniting those believing in the
Catholic faith in very similar ways by using these magnificent buildings as propaganda in a positive

Peter s Basilica are architecturally different, yet they both unite those people who put their faith in the
Catholic Church and into the hands of God by using these structures as propaganda. St. Peter s

time period that construction began for this magnificent building. Gaudi s La Sagrada Familia is
unique even for other basilicas and cathedrals built in the Gothic style. He brings together new ways
of architecture and construction that make La Sagrada Familia such an interesting and outstanding
structure years before its completion. However, despite the differences in appearance between St.

and bring visitors from different backgrounds and religions to one meeting

Children Should Spend Watching Television
Animated cartoons, or motion pictures using animated techniques to display sequential drawings, have
been a popular form of entertainment since the early eighteenth century. From the 1920 s to the 1960 s
was a time marked as the golden age of cartooning. Years after that would provide a special time slot
that had kids waiting in anticipation for the weekends, a term known as Saturday Morning Cartoons.
Research conducted within the last decade has concluded that children spend significantly more time
watching television than they do learning in classrooms. The sociological textbook, Sociology the
Essentials, states The average person consumes some form of media sixty nine hours per week more
time than they likely spend in school or at work; thirty three of these hours are spent watching
television (Andersen 42). The majority of targeted adolescent television shows are animated. Although
the statistics may be high, the thirty three hours spent on television could be spent learning instead of
neglecting education. Cartoons are chalk full of lessons on vocabulary, speech, mathematics, and
science. Reaching out to a young demographic during their scholastic career with a comfortable form
of media can be everlastingly beneficial. Ultimately cartoons helpfully assist in the overall
development of adolescence.
Television networks, such as PBS and Nickelodeon, that are directed towards the attention of children
play an essential role in teaching kids about foreign languages. In

leaving an impenetrable metal wall. A slight breeze whirled through the bottom of the treacherous
canyon lifting the smell of the rotting dead. The screeching screams and shrieks of the savage demons

On top of the wall, the nervous army scattered around trying to get in position. Grabbing their

Discussion of Whether Gattaca Portrays A Realistic View Of The Future And Gene Manipulation
Media. It controls a lot of what we think, what we believe and so changes our attitude and behaviour
towards certain things. It has changed our thinking so much so that we believe almost anything and
everything the media say and do. Without the media, life would not be as it is. Newspapers,
magazines, television, internet, radio, the lot have very much altered our thinking.
Lately, there have been many talks on the issues regarding genetic manipulation and human cloning.

During the late 90 s, when Gattaca was released, talks on gene manipulation were very serious. It was
also around the time when the clone of Dolly the sheep was revealed to the public. In my opinion,
Andrew Niccol had purposely released the film at that particular time to make realise the
consequences of gene manipulation, to make parents most of all, realise what could happen. I think
that at the end of the film, when Jerome commits suicide and Vincent is going up into space, is a very
effective part in portraying the consequences of having a genetically modified child. A person who
thought he was perfect in all ways possible, who people thought to be perfect; his life ended the day
he got a silver medal instead of gold in a swimming competition. He tried to commit suicide, but
became handicapped instead. However, he did become successful in killing himself at the end. I think
Andrew Niccol wanted to depict how fatal the consequences could be, because people were only
seeing one side of the story more like only being shown one side the better side of the story; these
people being parents. He wanted people, in particular parents to become aware of the problems arising
with having gene manipulated children.
Niccol wanted parents to think about their children. Whether they wanted a God Child who was not
perfect, but could still lead a normal

  • 2. The Beat Generation Subculture Essay The Beat Generation Subculture Every generation has its middle class, majority, and norm, which are decided by that era s standards of behavior and thought. Similarly, each generation has a group that rejects these standards and rebels against the norm. In the 1950 s a group of American writers that exemplified this behavior formed. They were called the beat generation. The beat generation was particularly remarkable because although it was began by an exceptionally small group of people, its cultural influence was enormous. The beats rebelled against things like conformity and consumerism in the post World War II society. Their writing challenged both traditional American values and contemporary writing styles. Incorporating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Many writers in the group later renounced the term when they felt it lost its meaning. It took the beats a long time before they gained fame however. Jack Kerouac s novel, On the Road, went through many different publishers before anyone agreed to print it. When it did come out it was heavily criticized by the press. In the 1950 s the lifestyle that On the Road explored was considered deviant. The stereotype that emerged in the mass media was a spaced out beatnik, dressed in black, pounding on bongo drums and muttering gibberish as poetry (Microsoft Encarta, 2001). America s youth, however, identified with the feelings of despair and the need for freedom expressed in their work. The beats created a revolution that began with many young people leaving their conventional lives to hitchhike around American and find themselves. Like most subcultures, the Beat Generation rebelled against the social and cultural norms of their time. For them it was the post World War II society that they rejected. Cultural historians point out that acquisition of consumer goods, which had been scarce during wartime, became a central feature of postwar life, driven by the mass media, advertising, and generous loan terms (Encarta, 2001). Within connective tissues, there are many tissue disorders that can affect your muscles, joints, or skin also your organs and organ systems. One connective tissue disease that I found was Marfan syndrome. Marfan syndrome is an inherited disorder that affects the connective tissue. Marfan syndrome affects about 1 in every 5000 people. People that have marfan syndrome usually have trouble with their eyes, heart, skeleton, and blood vessels. The main issue is the aorta which is the main artery can increasingly enlarge and lead to a dissection which is when the aorta erupts and that can lead to death. About forty percent of people with marfan syndrome that have an aorta that erupts will die immediately. Even if you have surgery after the aorta dissects there is a ten to twenty percent chance you could die. Most people with this disorder should check that their aorta is not rapidly or increasingly growing. The normal size for an aorta is about an inch, if it gets bigger than 4.7 centimeters, then it would be a good idea to get surgery. Luckily, most people that have to have a non emergency surgery have a 98% or greater chance of success. There are usually two types of surgery they can do to replace the aorta. The first one is the traditional method which is where they replace the aorta and put in graft and replace the aorta valve with a mechanical valve or the valve sparing method where the replace the aorta with a tube graft and re implant the original valve. • 4. Black Feminist According to Oxford English Dictionary, Black Feminist can be defined as a movement consisting of African American women advocating social, political, legal, and economic rights for women equal to those of men (Oxford English Press). Black feminism argues that sexism, social class oppression, and racism are inseparably bound together (Collins). The feminist movement has been around since the 1880s when the word Feminism appeared in the French language (Collins). The word found traction in Britain in the 1890s, and the United States in 1910, feminism sought to influence popular culture by its very presence and by its persistent demands to be recognized as the official voice of all women ( What is Feminism ). To conclude, Black feminist are constantly striving to overcome sexism, class oppression, and racism. They have also argued that black women are positioned within structures of power in fundamentally different ways than white women (Collins). Black feminist organizations had to overcome three different challenges that no other feminist organization had to face. The first challenge these women faced was to prove to other black women that feminism was not only for white women (Burns). They also had to demand that white women share power with them and affirm diversity, and fight the misogynist tendencies of Black organizations (Burns). Facepunch argues that Glynn has pled that claim with insufficient particularity. Under the Declaratory Judgment Act, the court may declare the rights and other legal relations of any interested party seeking such declaration. Facepunch argues that it never intended to enter into joint ownership with Glynn. Both sides agree, however, that Glynn was an independent contractor for Facepunch and never signed any documents altering his copyright interest in any game he produced. Moreover, Glynn alleges that he wrote roughly 75% of RUST s code, making him the dominant author. Glynn s complaint sufficiently alleges that he performed a substantial amount of work on RUST and worked closely with other collaborators at Facepunch to create a finished product. Glynn s contract with Facepunch establishes his monthly stipend, but does not affect his rights as an independent contractor to joint authorship in his work and derivative works. The court will not dismiss Glynn s claim for declaratory judgment. Glynn argues that Facepunch interfered with his contract or economic advantage by abandoning RUST and replacing it with Facepunch s failed experimental game. Some of the greatest tragedies Russia experienced under Soviet rule were the famines that occurred in 1921, 1932, and 1947. The scope of the devastation is still unparalleled within the country s borders and around the globe. While the damage and hardship endured during these trying times is uncontested, their specific causes are still held in contention. The first famine resulted as an economic disturbance caused by the tail ends of World War I, the 1917 Revolution, and the Soviet Civil War. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If this were truly the case then there would have been more than enough to feed every peasant even if the grain was distributed poorly. This suggests that the official figures are not to be trusted and have likely been exaggerated. It is possible that the statistics recorded were manufactured before the actual harvest as projections for the oncoming season or biological yields. Famine was widespread throughout the country, hitting the urban areas and countryside extremely hard. The estimates of the harvest must have been extremely exaggerated because the death toll was skyrocketing and many of the typically favored peoples (the industrial workers and city dwellers) were dying from starvation also. However, just because starvation and disease was rampant does not mean that everyone suffered equally. The death toll in the Ukraine in particular was abnormally high. Some of this can be blamed on the still harsh requisitions taken from the Ukrainian peasants. One of the major differing points in the treatment between the Ukrainian peasants and other Russian citizens involved emigration. The desperate living conditions brought peasants to the cities and urban workers to the countryside all in search of food and a more stable life. For the first time since the tsar was in power internal passports were given to Russian citizens. They were able to relocate to find better prospects for themselves ... But as I went through my notes I realized how many phenomenal philosophers have played a part in developing the basis for education in this country. I realized also that I could not answer the question stated above with a singular philosopher s name. However, I do agree with definite points of individual philosophers and have decided to create my own portrait of what an educated man (or woman) would look like. I start with the heart of Horace Mann because his heart was in the right place. He believed that everyone should be enrolled in school. She preached that there should be a focus on the family and learning near your home. Along with Wallstonecraft is Catherine Beecher. Beecher advocated for the rights of women in the field of education. She enforced the idea of exercise and its health benefits, especially for women, at a time when the idea was considered taboo. Beecher had a hand in the advancement of female colleges and although she did not believe in equal education for men and woman she did act as a catalyst for the beginnings of female education. Soon the feet of Rousseau must be added to my educated person. Rousseau adhered to the idea that students should be allowed to grow on their own and form their own identities. • 13. The Importance Of Greed In Macbeth Oftentimes, to further their lifestyles, people hide behind a fictitious version of themselves. Eventually, one finds their mind twisting and turning, detracted and dismembered, unable to bear the gravity and distress of their conflicting personas. Take, for example, the character Macbeth in the play Macbeth, who to remand power reveals his true unstable persona while continuing to maintain a virtuous one to the public which results in a tyrannical dominance of his instability. Because of Macbeth s actions, Scotland is thrown into chaos when his unstable personality completely dominates him and leads to his demise at the hands of rebels affected by his greedy and indecent actions. In the play Macbeth, Shakespeare uses light and darkness imagery to convey how Macbeth s ambition and greed led to corruption, signifying the negative societal effects tyrants have because of their greed and ambition. Shakespeare uses light imagery to reveal Macbeth s immoral personality which resulted from greed. Before Banquo was murdered, Macbeth laments to Lady Macbeth, Light thickens, and the crow makes wing to the rooky wood: Good things of day begin to droop and drowse, whiles night s black agents to their preys do rouse (III.ii. l50 53). Macbeth explains that eventually anything good will fall away and anything made of evil will rise and take control of the world. Shakespeare uses metaphorical imagery to make Macbeth admit how mentally mutilated he became by his ambition to remain in power by symbolizing him and Lady Macbeth as night s agents or evil beings and Banquo as good . Macbeth s immoral behavior indicates the desire and want for power as a sovereign and what limits he would go to just to ensure his vision, resulting in disfigurement of his kingdom. Furthermore, when Macbeth is debating whether it is alright for him to murder King Duncan, Macbeth notes, Stars, hide your fires, /Set not light see my black and deep desires;/ The eye wink at the hand; yet let that be/ which the eye fears, when it is done, to see (I.iv.51 53). Through his words, Macbeth directly admits that he has an immoral side to him and that he wants it to remain concealed to people while he portrays his virtuous persona. Shakespeare ... It can be described as an odorless, tasteless and transparent liquid that occur naturally. Water is colorless when it is in small amount, but adopts a bluish color when it is in large quantities. As a natural compound, water is the most abundant and familiar liquid that exist on earth. In its natural solid (ice) and liquid form, water is estimated to cover over 70% of the entire surface of the universe (Sikorski, 2006). Biologically, water constitutes a huge proportion of all the living tissues in a human body. Specifically, water comprises approximately 92% of the blood plasma, an estimate of 80% of the muscle tissues, and over 61% of the body s red blood cells (Ratner et al., 2012). Also, water constitutes of over a half of the majority of other tissues in the human body. Since water appears to be so ubiquitous, people tend to be unaware of the unique properties that make water an essential compound. It is the unique physical and chemical properties of water that are unavailable in other natural compounds that give it indisputable importance in supporting the lives and survival of all living organisms on earth. • 19. Neural Computational And Neural Computation Attempting to understand the mind and its processes can be a challenging concept to try and grasp. Over the years there have been many different interpretations of how we understand the world around us through information and processing in the mind and brain. Argumentatively, there are a few approaches to neural computational and neural information processing to the mind and brain, such as through biophysical and algorithmic neural computation. While, the transition from biophysical neural computational processing to algorithmic neural computational processing have different processes they are both an important aspect in understanding the process from information gathered from the world to neural computation in the mind and brain. The biophysical aspect of neural computation is a complicated piece that is still being researched and uncovered today. However, at a rudimentary level information processing is where biophysical neural computation begins. Information processing is a type of processing that occurs within the brain so that natural information, or causal correlation, can be processed into neural summation, which eventually leads to neural computation. When we perceive something in the world we make biophysical connections within our brain so that we can comprehend what we see or hear in the world. During this biophysical neural computation, information processing goes through the process of neural summation, which is a method of signal transduction. During this ... • 20. The Wolf In Quentin Tarantino s Pulp Fiction Just because you are a character doesn t mean that you have character. This was said by The Wolf in Quentin Tarantino s movie Pulp Fiction. Tarantino opens our minds to a word with no ordinary days and especially no ordinary people. And that s just what this movie isn t, ordinary. There are so many twist and turns, with storylines out of order and violence mixed in with everyday conversations. It s a movie that can get you confused and grossed out but also excited and thrilled. It s so casually not casual and as a viewer I have such mixed feelings on it. Pulp Fiction tells you not only one story but multiple on life through the eyes of mobsters and criminals. I stand by its slot on AFI s top 100 list due to its attention grabbing characters ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Tarantino develops an array of crooks and gangsters who work in a business of money and drugs. He makes them indulge in little conversations to express their perspectives on life and what exactly goes through the minds of these so called ¨bad¨ men. Hitmen Jules Winnfield and Vincent Vega (played by Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta) do some pretty terrible things but still manage to have conversations that normal people have on a daily basis. For example they were driving to kill a bunch of boys for screwing over their boss and on the way there all the talked about was what European countries call their hamburgers at McDonalds. I found this very comical because they are literally driving to an apartment to hunt down these men and that is what is on there mind. Even right before they walk in they talk about the deeper meaning behind giving a foot massage. They are so nonchalant about everything they do and I almost admire that. Of course what they are doing is wrong but the way they make light of the situation infers the fact of their perspective on life. People don t need to be serious and stern all the time and Vincent and Jules prove that. That s how the movie kept me entertained because I could relate to the characters. There weren t just hit men with no interior but men who could be normal. I also really enjoyed the character Mia Wallace (played by Uma Thurman). Although she was addicted to drugs she gave the audience an inside to her mind and what she thought of. Like in the movie she talked about how if two people were so comfortable with one another then they can sit in silence and it wouldn t be weird. She quotes ¨That s when you know you ve found somebody really special, when you can just shut the f*** up for a minute and comfortably share a silence.¨ I find that to be very true. If you truly are comfortable then not talking should just be normal. Pulp Fiction does a great job composing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 24. Get Rid Of A Bug Research Paper Since aphids do not have much of a shell or armor to protect them, you can get rid of or slow this pest down in some natural ways. 1. Squish them. This is a very time consuming method of getting rid of these insects. If you decide to go this route, be sure to wear rubber gloves, or the juice from the bug may irritate your skin. 2. Hit the bugs with the hose. Spraying your plants with water will dislodge the critters and they will not return to the same plant. There are hose attachments, like the bug blaster, that you can buy that is used for this specific purpose. 3. Get rid of colonies. Colonies of aphids can be snipped off. Therefore, they should keep their minds, especially being young and on the debate team (Washington, Black, Forte, Roth, Winfrey, Eisele Porro, 2008). Denzel Washington was graphic and serious while he was telling the students about his father. However, I believe he had thought them a good lesson in the dialogue. I believe the moral of the dialogue is to keep your mind regardless of what may happened in your life. Because if someone control your mind they basically control your life, for example, the slaves. Nevertheless, Denzel Washington used intercultural communication ethics which I think was good. However, in another scene, Denzel Washington employs Public discourse ethics. Public discourse ethics protects and promotes a place of conversation for diversity of ideas and persons (Arnett, Fritz, Janie Bell, 2008). The only way to have his wife escape a hanging is to admit that had relations with Abigail to the court. His great pride and fear of public view forced him to keep his adultery from the court. However, Proctor becomes more concerned with his individual integrity than his public status. Proctor still wants to cleanse his name, but for religious and personal reasons. Proctor s refusal to supply a false confession is a true personal and religious stand. Confessing would dishonor his fellow prisoners, who are brave enough to hang at the gallows as statement of truth. More importantly, a false admission would also dishonor him, tainting not just his public standing, but also his soul and integrity. By refusing to forfeit his own integrity Proctor implicitly proclaims his conviction that such integrity will bring him to heaven. He is martyred, being redeemed for his earlier sins. • 31. Washington Irving, American Story Teller Essay Washington Irving, American Story Teller I strongly agree with the statement Washington Irving found in legend and folklore a view of the natural world colored by emotion, by superstition, and by the ancient belief that supernatural beings inhabit the wild places of the earth. He wrote stories that illustrated old truths about human nature and the dramatic possibilities of the American landscape. Although Irving wrote over twenty volumes, including essays, poems, histories, biographies, and more, in class, we have focused on his fiction. Irving dispersed many beliefs and legends of his time, and the past, into his stories. He also made great use of American themes in these literary pursuits. Such details along with existent people and events interlaced in his imaginary tales are some of the reasons I find his work so distinctive and enjoyable. Washington Irving was the youngest of eleven children, born into a somewhat wealthy New York City merchant family in 1783. In his twenties, he wrote for newspapers, journals, and magazines. Shortly afterward, he worked in publishing and editing. As the first American belletrist, Erving found great enjoyment in writing. His first notable book, (which he heralded the release of with a fanciful precursor,) was A History of New York (1809). It was published under one of his many clever pseudonyms, (faux historian), Diedrich Knickerbocker. When Irving was thirty six years old, the simultaneous publications of The ... Atwood creates voices for the women who did not have an important role in Homer s epic poems. The writer also creates two levels of myths: the Homeric myth of faithful Penelope and cultural myths about women as either submissive and domestic, or as duplicitous schemers (9 Homwells). In Penelopiad, Penelope retells the story in her point of view and although she is the main narrator, the twelve maids often interject their side of the story. The more thickly they laid it on, the more costly were the gifts they expected from me. I always complied. Even an obvious fabrication is some comfort when you have few others (Atwood 49). While, Penelope s payment for the altered stories shows her desire to only believe the best about Odysseus. However, the maids create Odysseus s character to be more scandalous and the complete opposite, when compared to Penelope. Their narrative suggests that he doesn t seem to be bolting back to Ithaca. Demonstrating, there is an alternative version of the story, where Odysseus is less admirable and irresponsible. Also, through the maids, Atwood is able to depict women being submissive to men, in a more rasping point of view. In particular, when Telemachus is born the maids state, We were his pets and his toy things, mock sisters, his tiny companions. ... He saw us as rightfully his, for whatever purpose (Atwood 42). • 34. Children Should Spend Watching Television Animated cartoons, or motion pictures using animated techniques to display sequential drawings, have been a popular form of entertainment since the early eighteenth century. From the 1920 s to the 1960 s was a time marked as the golden age of cartooning. Years after that would provide a special time slot that had kids waiting in anticipation for the weekends, a term known as Saturday Morning Cartoons. Research conducted within the last decade has concluded that children spend significantly more time watching television than they do learning in classrooms. The sociological textbook, Sociology the Essentials, states The average person consumes some form of media sixty nine hours per week more time than they likely spend in school or at work; thirty three of these hours are spent watching television (Andersen 42). The majority of targeted adolescent television shows are animated. Although the statistics may be high, the thirty three hours spent on television could be spent learning instead of neglecting education. Cartoons are chalk full of lessons on vocabulary, speech, mathematics, and science. Reaching out to a young demographic during their scholastic career with a comfortable form of media can be everlastingly beneficial. During the late 90 s, when Gattaca was released, talks on gene manipulation were very serious. It was also around the time when the clone of Dolly the sheep was revealed to the public. In my opinion, Andrew Niccol had purposely released the film at that particular time to make realise the consequences of gene manipulation, to make parents most of all, realise what could happen. I think that at the end of the film, when Jerome commits suicide and Vincent is going up into space, is a very effective part in portraying the consequences of having a genetically modified child.
