Topic : Problem of teaching & learning
English in India
❏ What is Language ? :
“Language is a system of sound, words, patterns, etc. used by
human to communicate thoughts and feelings.”
~ Oxford dictionary
❏ Global Language :
Today's world considers English as a global language
because there has never been a language so widely
spread or spoken by so many people as English. ( Official
language and medium of communication)
Psychological problems
Shyness
Fear
● The lack of confidence is remarkable factor of anxiety and fear.
Student need to have healthy self-respect and need to believe in
themselves as learner. Self-esteem and self-confidence are like
the foundations of a building: if they are not secure enough,
even the best technology will be insufficient to build solid walls
over them. The teacher can employ the most creative
motivational ideas, but if students have basic doubts about
themselves they will be unable to ‘bloom’ as learners.
Problems of learning & teaching
Lack of clear aim Limited vocabulary
The lack of
good teacher
Less use of
technology
Grammar and
Sentence
Structure
The teaching of English in India is not in accordance with the
aims of teaching English. Many times, neither the teacher nor
the student is acquainted English. The teacher only wants
that his students should pass the examination. The main
aims, in this way, get neglected.
❏ Neglecting the Aims of Teaching English:
● Vocabulary is very important to any language; how else is anyone
supposed to express themselves clearly and be understood when
they don’t know the words? It turns out that some Indian students
have a limited vocabulary, which makes speaking and writing in
English a problem.
● The problem with having a limited vocabulary doesn’t just affect the
student's ability to speak or write in English, it also affects their
ability to learn
❏ Limitations of vocabulary :
● The rules of grammar and sentence construction are different for every
language. When non-native English speakers write in English, they will
subconsciously try to apply the rules of their language, which leads to
awkward grammar and sentence structure.
For example : “I don’t know the answer”
“I am not knowing the answer.”

Self-esteem and self-confidence are like the foundations of a building: if they are not secure enough, even the best technology will be insufficient to build solid walls over them.
